Sizzlin’ Sixlets Team Language Arts Students are starting a unit that challenges them to examine various types of literary heroes in order to analyze and evaluate admirable qualities of a hero, as well as the potential everyone possesses to be heroic. Every society has its own heroes; everyone has a set of values for which they feel strongly about heroism. As always, continue looking for a reading log. Students should be reading twenty minutes a day. Science You can contact me at [email protected] Thank you to all our adults who participated in conferences! It was wonderful to experience so many great connections, goal settings, and problem solving. This month we will take our study of chemistry to the plant and animal kingdom. We will find out how organisms obtain and use matter and energy to grow and change. We will find out why sun water and oxygen are so important to our life on Earth. We will continue to the competition, predator/prey among populations and the resources available. We will be covering Human Growth and Development in December. The parent form for Opt In/Opt Out for the Human Growth and Development unit was part of the enrollment packet. Math In 6th grade Math the students have finished their unit on expressions and we have moved into equations. Students will learn how to solve one step equations that have multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. They will then use this knowledge to make in and out tables and graph their results on a coordinate plane. Students will also explore ine-qualities.

Once we finish this unit students will begin to review rational numbers. Students will order, com-pare, and graph rational numbers as fractions and decimals. The students will continue to have weekly homework given on Monday each week and quizzes on Thursdays of each week. The stu-dents are really doing a great job understanding the content, taking notes, and working in class. Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Social Studies Students are digging into the values of ancient Mesopotamia and understanding the concept of justice. They are analyz-ing some of the 282 laws of Hammurabi. Then, they will take their ideas and write a persuasive essay illustrating if they thought the laws were fair or not fair. Lastly, please continue to have conversations about current events w/ your child!

Dental Screenings are coming up on December 1, 2016. Please contact Nurse Walden if you need to opt out of screening.

December 2, 2016 – E.C. Tyree Clinic will be offering FREE dental services to student’s whose parents consent.

Consent forms were in enrollment packets but will also be mailed him in No-vember and need to be returned by November 11th.

Band News

Our concert is quickly approaching – Thursday, November 17, at the EAST HIGH auditorium. From the Circle Drive En-trance (door closest to Douglas Street) take stairs up to the 2nd floor. The auditorium is located in the center of the orig-inal East High building on the 2nd floor. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm. 7th and 8th grade students will need to be at East High (in the new band room) by 6:30. 6th grade students will need to be on the stage at 6:40. It is much easier for parents to find the auditorium if they enter at the Circle Drive Entrance rather than the band room where the 7/8th graders warm up. All band students will need to wear all black (black top, black pants, black shoes, and black socks. Here are our audience expectations: 1. Please silence all cell phones. 2. Please refrain from talking during the performance. Our students have

worked very hard and deserve our full attention. 3. If a small child becomes fussy or agitated, please take them out to the hall-

way until they are able to calm down. 4. We love to show support for our children, but this is not a sporting event.

We ask that you show your support and appreciation for the music by clap-ping only.

5. Please wait until an applause break to enter or exit the auditorium. Congratulations to Joelle Frady, Aditiya Joshi, and RJ James for being selected to be in the South Central Kansas Music Educators Association Middle School Honor Band. The performance will be Saturday, Nov. 5, Andover Central High School, 3:00 pm.

10% of Students Miss Too Much School

Chronic absences increase the chance of students falling behind in their classes. An estimated

one in 10 students in the United States are chronically absent from school. Students who miss

18 or more days of school are considered “chronically absent,” regardless of whether the absenc-

es are excused, unexcused, or for disciplinary reasons. Students tend to feel left out and can

lose interest when they miss school. It is important to be at school and sets students up for

success by developing good habits and a sense of responsibility.

Arriving to school on time is equally important. It sets the tone for the day and is disruptive to

the classes when students come in late.

Please consider how important school is to your students future and the educational opportuni-

ties missed when your student is absent or tardy.

Take a look at the calendar and schedule appointments on non-school days,

½ days of school, spring and fall break. Take advantage of the summer and

plan annual visits then.

“Robinson’s mission is to provide a positive and safe learning culture focused

on academic, social and behavioral growth and excellence for all.”

Organization Update It’s time to refresh supplies! Many students are running low or are completely out of items that they need daily for class. Check with your student to make sure they have pencils, loose leaf paper, highlighters, dry erase markers, and spiral notebooks for Cornell notes. Remember that students should be writing in their agenda for every class to keep track of assignments, and they should be asking you for a parent signature once a week. Helpful Tip: sit down with your student once a week and help them organize their binder. Put hole-punched assign-ments behind tabs by class to keep them in order, review graded assignments, and look for any work that might need to be turned in. Being organized helps students stay on top of their academics.

Check your ParentVue account routinely to keep up with your student’s progress in clas-ses. Students can also check their own grades through their StudentVue account.

ROBINSON PTSO NOVEMBER 4: FUNDRAISER MONEY DUE BACK All students should have their payments for their fundraisers back to their teachers (1st hour for 6th & 8th grades, 3rd hour for 7th) by Friday, Nov. 4. THANK YOU to the 126 students who sold items and the 22 whose families made donations to the fundraiser. You raised more than $8,200 for projects around Robinson! NOVEMBER 7, 6 P.M.: PTSO MEETING AND SITE COUNCIL Join us in the cafeteria as we go over upcoming events and talk about things that support RMS students and staff. After that, stick around for Mrs. Champlin’s monthly Site Council meeting. It’s the best place to find out what’s going on at your child’s school. NOVEMBER 10, 6-8 P.M.: FALL DANCE All students can come back to school from 6 to 8 p.m. for our first all-school dance of the year. Students will be glowing (hint, hint, theme alert) if they can make it. Tickets will be sold AT LUNCH ONLY on Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 8-10. Tickets are $3 on Nov. 8, $5 on Nov. 9-10. (Yes, the dance is on a Thursday night because there is no school Friday for Veterans Day.) NOVEMBER 15, 5:30 P.M.: BINGO COMMITTEE MEETING Parents, if you’re interested in helping with the April 21 Bingo Night, please join us at a meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the cafeteria. We’ll continue to plan on what we’ll do that evening.

Lucky 7’s Team Math Ratios and Proportions! In November 7th grade math students will complete a unit about proportional relationships, ratios, and rates. Start talking to your students about practical applications:

How to double, triple, or halve a recipe? How do you know whether it’s a “better buy” to purchase the large container or the small container while at the grocery store? How can you use a rate such as miles per hour to estimate how long it will take to get to your destination?

Students will have homework on a regular basis--check their agenda so you can determine what should be completed at home on a regular basis. Science Still rockin’!!!!! 7th grade science is finishing up our unit on the rock cycle with a lab investigating how acid rain and plant acids can affect rocks. We will be starting our unit on natural disasters this coming week!!!! This nine weeks we will be looking at prehistory. This will include geologic time, fossils, and the theory of evolution. Students will need their binders, paper and pencils to take notes. The students will be working in small groups and will have a few independent assignments. As long as the students are productive there will be no homework. All assignments should be finished during class time. Social Studies 7th grade social studies is starting the 2nd 9 weeks off with a large project. The document based question will challenge students to use information about the world to make and support a decision. When finished it may take some time be-fore a grade shows up in the grade book so don’t worry if it is blank. We will be following up the DBQ with a study of North America. Language Arts Language Arts classes will be challenging their students to investigate the concept of courage through reading a variety of literature and informational texts. The close reading selection is, “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred Lloyd Tennyson. At the end of the unit students will be completing a performance demonstration about courage. SCHOOLWIDE BINDERS EVERY student at Robinson Middle School will be learning strategies to help build organization. Below are the materials needed for the Robinson Binder: 3-inch, 3-ring binder (no smaller than 3 inches) Please do not purchase zipper binders—they rarely have 3-inch rings 1 set of tabbed dividers 3-ring pencil pouch Several packages of College-ruled loose-leaf paper* Several packages of pencils* Large erasers Blue and black pens One package of thin highlighters One package of thin dry erase markers *these supplies frequently need to be replenished during the school year; it might be helpful to purchase extras to store until they are needed
