Business, Tech and Co-op

The Business and Technology department is continuing to develop its courses integrating new technological tools to enhance student success. More and more teachers are using new communication tools, such as My Class, D2L and Google Apps for Education to boost student learning, both in school and at home. With our focus on Numeracy, Literacy, Climate, Critical Thinking and Technology we are educating the modern learner and preparing them for the future.

Business In our grade 12 International Business class, through assignment like ‘It’s in the Ingredients’, “Trade Fair” and “Going International” students had the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real world situations. The grade 12 Business Leadership students had the opportunity to participate in an in-school fieldtrip to learn the importance of team work, communication and critical thinking. They also had the opportunity to experience project management and put theory into practice as part of their summative assignment. Our Accounting students have learnt the basics of Financial Accounting in grade 11 and how the world of finance impacts our personal and business lives.

The grade 10 Business class had a very exciting semester. They had the opportunity to experience the functions of Business in the, ‘That Rings a Sell’ assignment. Our Grade 9 ICT for Business classes have learned how businesses use different technologies to be successful in the today’s fast changing world. As part of their summative project, they applied all their skills and knowledge to develop documents related to

their own business idea.

The law classes had an exciting semester with visits from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and Peel Police. The Grade 12 Law class visited the Superior Courts in Toronto, where they had the opportunity to meet a Superior Court Judge, Crown and Defense Attorney not to mention, observe the legal system in action. As always the highlight of the semester for both grade 11 and 12 law classes were the mock trials.

Tech Studies Our Grade 9 program has been enhanced through a workshop makeover made possible through the efforts of Mr. Campana, Mrs. Cerovic and Ms. Ripper. The redesigned workspace offers students a more focused environment to learn and develop new skills particularly during the CO2 car and Sumobot units.

The Transportation, Construction, and Computer Engineering classes have Mr. Campana, Mr. Sanger and Mrs. Cerovic teaching a variety of skills to the students. Many of the skills they learn will help them in various professions and trades after High School. Mr. Sanger's Grade 11 Construction Tech class built accessible raised garden beds, Ms. Cerovic’s Grade 12 Computer Engineering class constructed fully autonomous robots. Excellent work!!!

Computer Studies The Computer Studies courses in Grade 11(ICS3U0) and Grade 12(ICS4U0) are helping to give students an understanding of computer science and prepare them for further study in college and university. Mr. Craigen has implemented some of the most forward teaching techniques available in the world of computer science to our computer students here at Applewood.

Computer Club The Computer Club meets every Tuesday, and Thursday from 10:55-11:40 in Room 209. The purpose of the club is to allow all students interested in computer programming an opportunity to interact with others of like mind, and to practice their skills. No experience is necessary. Students have the option to prepare for computer competitions such as the Canadian Computing Competition held by the University of Waterloo. Other competitions include Cyber Security and many others.

The ARTS Grade 10 Media Art We have had a great start to the semester learning Adobe Illustrator and the basics of Graphic Design! We are now moving on to Photography and learning all about digital imaging! (Living Letter design by Ayesha Shuja, Expressive Type by Lananh Vo, Colour Meaning by Thomas Shim)

Grade 12 Media Art The senior students have been working on a number of Graphic Design, Photography, and Video assignments as they further investigate technical and aesthetic concepts. We are working toward producing portfolio-worthy digital artwork! ( Hello My Name Is Design by Sana Ahmed, Nahil Mustun, Megan Lim.)

In the last few weeks of term, students learned the basics of Photoshop. Students then created Surrealist Hybrid collages to demonstrate their technical and aesthetic skills as well as explore this fascinating and imaginative movement in art.

PHOTOGRAPHY Ms. Bartlett’s Media Art class along with Ms. Velianou’s Visual Art class hosted the Grad Art Show, a school wide event. With over 200 works and as many guests, it made for a great after-school celebration. In addition, this event raised $158 for The Hospital for SickKids for the SickKids Foundation. Students had the opportunity to share in this authentic learning experience that allowed them to hone their communication and collaborative skills by visually organizing their works, writing artist statements and of course, communicating their ideas to family, friends, and Applewood staff. The Arts is also comprised of music and drama, and will soon be getting ready for the Arts Banquet costume and dinner event to be held in May – stay tuned for details!

Grade 11 Photography Photography students have been learning about the rules of composition as well as the basics of shutter speed and aperture. With this foundation of aesthetics and technical knowledge, we will be moving on to explore the genres of photography, including portraiture, still life, food, and landscape. (Eisha Rauf, Faith Bernabe, Maryam Sheikh, Jordan McConnell, Keesha Mangurali, Hiba Tariq)

Students completed the course by creating a themed photographic series. Projects demonstrated all we had learned about ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. The work also revisited the many genres we had explored over the term including portraiture, landscape, and still life photography.

Visual Arts Grade 9

Grade 9s have been busy getting creative while considering project expectations in our Typography Unit. Through the creation of their name, nickname or surname, students have transformed letters into objects to create detailed designs; thinking about layout and pencil crayon techniques. (Artists: Farida Noori, Alisay Fatima, Dooha Al-Abedy, Siera O’Hare)

Grade 10 Through the application of the elements of design, students have created unified abstract creations. We are now moving to apply compositional techniques to create Surrealistic computer designed environments that will then be transformed into pen and ink. Artists: Jessica Ly, Nia Papoutsis, Shamera Chatheechan

Grade 12 Students have been busy extending their learning about process work, aesthetic theories, and the critical analysis process for viewing art. Our first project investigated the idea of cliche. It proved to be challenging to view a cliched image and springboard from it to create a brand new piece. Currently, students are investigating an artist of the past and applying their style to the form of an apple. Looking forward to the results! Artists: Corben Gilbert, Lea Rida, Miyoko Yiu)

Music The amazing students of the Music Department have been caught up in a whirlwind of performances this semester. From our inspiring Commencement experience on the huge stage at the Living Arts Centre performing The Climb to the more intimate Gr. 11 Jam Sessions on the Drama room stage, these musicians have been busy…and at their best.

The hard work of all of our brilliant ensembles culminated in the Sounds of the Season Concert in December. Vocalists and instrumentalists alike had the chance to share a range of engaging music with family and friends. Highlights included some of our newest, yet very talented, students in the Intermediate Band performing the powerful Star Wars: The Force Awakens followed by Chorale featuring solo singers in their stunning rendition of Rise Up. The spectacular Senior Band took us on a magical ride through fantasy worlds with The Nutcracker Suite and The Nightmare Before Christmas, while the always impressive Ambassadors brought the pizzazz showing us how to truly harmonize… And All That Jazz. There’s still more fun up ahead with the Spring Showcase Concert promising to be a fabulous night. Please join us on Thursday, April 11 at 7:00.

Drama News

The drama department is back in full swing this Fall. Our annual Sketch comedy show promises to be as silly, over the top and physical as usual. It will be running for two highly anticipated shows on October 25th and 26th in the drama studio. The grade 12 drama class is currently working on a collective play with the help of two playwrights that are here from the Soulpepper Theatre Company. Keep an eye out for this production to be hitting the stage in early November. We also have a small and dedicated group of students who have been attending the Studentwrights playwriting workshops in preparation of creating plays for both the Studentwrights play development festival in late November and the National Theatre School Ontario Drama Festival in February.

MODERNS

The Grade 11 French Immersion Law class photographed in front of a sculpture at the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. The sculpture, “Pillars of Justice”, shows a classic courtroom façade fashioned into a jury missing one member and “invites you to imagine that you are the twelfth”.

The Grade 11 French Immersion Law class visited the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto this November. The day began with a presentation and question and answer period with a French-speaking judge and crown attorney. After students attended the presentation, they observed criminal trials taking place that day. Students enjoyed being able to observe our justice system at work and were intrigued by the interactions between trial participants (judge, attorneys, and witnesses). In particular, students enjoyed watching how witnesses responded to questioning. Semester 2 French Immersion Law students will also have the opportunity to visit the Superior Court of Justice this spring.

Grade 11 and 12 Fashion

Students worked hard this semester to learn a new skill. They completed multiple sewing projects, but were mostly proud of the Pajama Pants they accomplished. Students agree that the patience and problem-solving skills they learned throughout this process will last them beyond this course! You can see these creations, and much more at our annual Talent and Fashion show, Applewood’s Got Talent, Friday March 29. There

will be a period 4 performance and an evening show at 7:00 pm for friends and family

Grade 12 Grad Food Day

Grad Food day was a huge success! Nutrition and Health students created and sold samples of trendy foods for 2019. Featured food items were Spinach Wraps, Pizza Burritos, Bings (Chinese burritos) and Bubble Tea, Shawarma Bowls, Taco Cups, Smoothie Bowls, Frozen Smoothie Bars and French Toast

AHSS Black Youth Club (BYC)

We successfully ran the AHSS Black Youth Club in semester one. Our goal was to embrace and build on the skills of black students at Applewood Heights Secondary School. Over 16 dedicated students attended many workshops such as The Poppy Project and Nail Art Holiday Gift workshop, heard guest speakers such as Metalworks Institute and Elisa John on the Hair business, and went on a field trip to tour and see the Fitness Olympics at Humber College. The group was led by Ms. Ghartey, Mr. Arthur and several other staff members.

BYC painted poppies on circular ash wood cross cuts which were used to create a 40 foot

poppy displayed in Celebration Square Nov 9 - 11 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the end of WWI

Model UN Team

2018-19 marked the Model UN club's second year, doubling in size to almost 30 student members. 16 members attended a regional conference hosted by Central Peel S.S. where they assumed the roles of UN member states along with 250 other students from across Peel to discuss, debate and create resolutions to help understand and attempt to solve global issues including nuclear weapons, health care and rebuilding nations after civil war. Three members will be attending the SOMA provincial completion at the University of Toronto this Spring.

News from the Green Team The Applewood Heights Green Team is working towards another Gold Eco schools certification with activities like school Eco reviews, recycling programs, a winter coat drive and schoolyard greening. We even tie dyed team shirts for the first time.

Parents, staff and students can still contribute by sending used markers or pens to the school for us to recycle. We are also happy to receive batteries which will get sent on to create zinc supplements for kids with deficiencies around the world.

In March and April we will be gardening and planning school wide events like the Great Gulp and Earth Week. We will also be participating in the Yellow Fish Road program to promote clean storm water. It’s never too late for new members! Green Team is a great way to earn community hours.

Student Remembrance Day Documentary Project

A passionate and creative group of grade 10, 11 and 12 history students worked collaboratively to plan, research and create a documentary that was viewed by the entire school to commemorate Canada’s participation in the First World War on the 100th

anniversary of the 1918 armistice. Anya, Ben, Monika, Isra, Emma, Mendhi, Ryan, Renee, Leena, Senan and Yousef worked together for over a month to tell the unique and diverse stories in both French and English of four Canadians who served including bluebird Evelyn McKay, brothers Wee Tan and Wee Hong Louie and legendary sniper Francis Pegahmagabow.

Guidance Department:

Thank you to all the students and parent that completed their course selections for the 2019-2020 school year prior to the holidays. Your course options are imperative to school planning for next year. Students and parents are encouraged to continue to use Myblueprint.ca as a planning tool for career planning and post-secondary options.

Graduating students are reminded that they must complete their diploma requirements prior to the end of the school year. March Break is a great time to complete your 40 hours of Community Service if you haven’t done so already. Volunteer opportunities are announced and posted Guidance. Additionally, Volunteer MBC is a great resource for upcoming volunteer opportunities in our community – www.volunteermbc.org

DEDICATION TO LITERACY Here at Applewood Heights, we are pleased to support the acquisition of important 21st century Literacy Skills. Part of that mission includes preparing our Grade 10 learners for the annual OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test), which is a standardized, provincial test for all Ontario students, and is also a graduation requirement. In an effort to prepare students for this test, students wrote a practice test on Friday September 28 during their period 2 class. This practice test benefits students by:

Exposing them to a short exemplar OSSLT and some types of test questions Providing them with feedback on their current literacy skills strengths/needs Reducing stress and anxiety related to test situations Simply reminding them of the OSSLT and is purpose

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of Friday October 12, all Mock Tests are now scored and have been delivered back to students in the same class they wrote. Please feel free to review your teen’s test at home together. Should you have questions about next steps, the OSSLT process or the test itself, or have any other questions regarding literacy supports offered at AHSS, please speak to Alexandria Moyles (Literacy Team Chair and Student Support Lead) @ [email protected], or see her directly in Room 114 -- The Support Zone.

As we approach the start of second semester, on behalf of Mrs. Singh and Mrs. Khan, we would personally like to congratulate all Applewood Heights DECA 2018-2019 participants for their performance at Regionals in November and look forward to the Provincial Conference in February.

Many of you are probably wondering what DECA is. For the last eight years Applewood has been a member and highly successful participant of a non-profit organization that promotes business excellence for high school students. DECA is an international organization that focuses on entrepreneurship, marketing and leadership skills. These skills are demonstrated in competitions that take place regionally, provincially and internationally. Over 185,000 high school students in 5,000 chapters, located in Canada, the U.S., Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Guam participate in DECA. Competition may take the form of a written business proposal and presentation, role play and written test or a variety of online business simulations. Applewood students have found success not only nationally but, also on the international stage.

During this past semester our students participated in the Peel Regional Conference held at North Park Secondary School in November. They had an excellent showing at the competition with honourable mentions for our Regional Conference award winners Gloria Zhang, Ashtar Esmander, Jane Shen, Edwin Trinh, Vanessa Phou-Lee, Alex Trinh, Keri Pushpakaran, Jack Lam, Shamera Chatheechan, Maryam Sheikh, Emily Naveenan and Abeera Ahmad. Congratulations to all those who have qualified for the Provincial Conference to be held in Toronto during the month of February. A great accomplishment for everyone!

Applewood Heights DECA thanks everyone for their support, in particular, our executive team for all their hard work as we look forward to the Provincial competition. Good luck Applewood!
