PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter.

We begin school holidays on Friday. I know that many of the children have had a very rewarding term full of learning activities.

Happy travels to those who are heading off for these holidays. There are some families who will be leaving GA at the end of the

week, also. I know that your child will enjoy their new schools, whether local, interstate or international. Thank you for your

support in the time that you have been a part of our school community.

School Uniforms

There are a number of children who are wearing the incorrect school uniform – shoes, shoelaces, hair scrunchies – to name a few. I

would ask all families to ensure that your child is in the correct uniform (please check the Uniform Policy on the website if you are

unsure) after the school holidays, as there will be uniform checks being done. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

New Stage in Hall

Over the coming school holidays we are looking forward excitedly to the new stage being built in the hall! The P&F are funding

this great addition to the school hall ($41,000) which will allow the audience to see the children up on the stage more easily. The

sound/lighting desk is also being upgraded and will make life easier for all. The stage will be put to good use by many groups in the

school - bands, assemblies, Performing Arts – to name a few.

Brisbane Catholic Education Listens Surveys

One of the ways we can continually improve as a school is to seek regular feedback from our community.

Next term, we will be launching the Brisbane Catholic Education Listens suite of surveys and asking our parents and carers, our

students and our staff what they think of Guardian Angels.

As partners in your child's education, what you think of our school matters. We’re calling these surveys 'listening surveys' because

we want to hear from as many in our community as possible. Our goal is to ensure we continually improve our efforts to provide an

enriching Catholic education for every student in our care.

All surveys will be confidential. Parents/carers and staff will have a month long window to complete the survey (from 20 July to 20

August) and teachers will be allocating a small amount of class time (we estimate about one half hour session) at an appropriate

time in the first few weeks of Term 3 for our students from Years 4-6.

Qualities of Angels

Once again this week’s Quality of Angels is TRUSTING. At Prayer Assembly on Monday,

2 Gold reminded us about what it means to be trusting. They told us that being trusting

means having faith in someone or something. It is a positive attitude about life. You believe

that the right thing will happen without trying to control the situation. Even when difficult

things do occur, trust helps us to find the gift or lesson being given to us. Trusting others

or having faith that the right thing will happen is scary sometimes but we can be confident

in knowing that our God is with us in everything we do. Every step we take in life, God

walks with us so we can place our trust in Him.

Monday Morning Cuppa and Catch Up

We would like to invite any parents and friends attending Prayer Assembly on Monday 23

July to join the students from 6 Blue and Mr West for light refreshments served in the Kombumerri Centre Kitchen directly after the

assembly concludes.

Please note the change of prayer assembly dates for 6 Blue (now Monday 23 July) and 4 White (now Monday 6 August).

Tuesday Parish Mass

Students in 6 Maroon, 6 White, 1 Maroon and 1 White attended mass this morning. Year 5 Gold and 5 Blue students and their Prep

Gold and Prep Blue buddies will join other members of our parish community to celebrate Eucharist next term at 9.00am on Tuesday

31 July. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend.

Sacramental Program

Please note the information below inviting registrations for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please contact the Southport Parish Office

for further information.

GA PJ Day – Thanks for your support!

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMS

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION IN 2018

The Registration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will be available online from

the 15th of June until the 15th of July 2018. The Sacramental of Confirmation

is offered ONCE IN A YEAR.

Following the Sacramental Policy of the Archdiocese of Brisbane the Sacrament of Confirmation is available to those children who are 8 years of age (Year 3) or older. This is the next spiritual journey that your child will engage in after their Baptism. They will be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

(Children must be baptised Catholics).

If you require any further information in regards to this matter please contact Maria Blancia on 5510 2222.

Last Thursday 21 June we held our annual GA PJ Day, which was a fundraising event to support Angels Kitchen, an outreach

program that provides a hot meal for 100 homeless people every Sunday of the year.

Guardian Angels you are amazing! Your generous contributions totalled just over $2000. Thank you for your incredible support of

this very worthy cause.

Catholic Education Week – Acts of Kindness @ GA

Don’t forget that for our Acts of Kindness during Catholic Education Week this year, we are

collecting donations to provide ‘Angel Bags’ for children on the Gold Coast who enter the foster

care system. The contents of these bags give comfort to these children who find themselves in

difficult and sometimes frightening circumstances. We aim to provide at least 100 Angel Bags

and to achieve this we are asking for the following donations, with toddlers and primary school-

aged children being the target groups:

• From Prep and Year 1 – small gender neutral teddy bears

• From Year 2 and Year 3 – children’s books

• From Year 4 – handballs

• From Year 5 and Year 6 – coloured pencils and/or small notepads

PLEASE ENSURE THAT ANY ITEMS DONATED ARE NEW. The Angel Bags will be packed on Thursday 2 August 2018 so

please consider purchasing one or two of the above items during the holidays and sending them into school early next term. These

items can be placed in the basket in your child/ren’s classroom/s or delivered directly to the school office.

Reading Log Draw

On Friday at assembly we will have our first ticket draw for reading logs. For every 25 nights read, students receive a ticket in this

draw. Because we didn’t have a draw in first term, there will be two tickets drawn for each year level. Students make sure your reading

logs are up to date and that your teacher has seen how many nights you have read – so far we have had 174 nights since 1 January

2018!

GA Big Bush Bash

The GA Big Bush Bash returns at last. For those of you who remember, four years ago we held a community bush dance to raise

money for drought-stricken farmers…and we all had a blast! Well we’re doing it again! Make sure you save the date in your calendars

– Friday 17 August 2018. There will be a flyer coming home in the next couple of days and more information will be available early

in Term 3. But for now, dust off your bush dancing boots and start practising your boot scootin’.

Wishing you all a happy final week of school for Term 2 – enjoy a well-deserved holiday everyone!

GA Learning Power Week 11

This week our Learning Power is Pongo Persistent. Pongo Persistent is the Learning Power that helps us to never give up, and to

really persist even when things get tough.

5 things you can say to encourage persistence:

• “Look at all of your hard work.”

• “Good for you, you didn’t give up.”

• “The more you practise, the better you get.”

• “You did that even though it wasn’t easy or fun.”

• “That was hard, but look how easy you made it by trying.”

At the final assembly this term, 5 students in each year level receive the honour of a GA Learning Power Award. This award

acknowledges that these particular students use their ‘power’ time and time again when learning becomes difficult. If your child is

one of the recipients, you will be notified by the class teacher. If you are unable to attend assembly, please know that we always

take lovely photos that get uploaded very quickly.

Have a wonderful week, Bianca STicklen

MUSIC NEWS

Cleaning Musical Instruments

The holidays are a great time to give your musical instrument a good clean. Please also clean the case, vacuuming is good and then

remove any rubbish.

Flutes: polish your flute to remove greasy fingerprints. Use your pull through after playing and check all the screws are in.

Clarinets: Wash your mouthpiece under warm water and dry carefully. Remove any gunk that has built up. Use cork grease on all

the corks and the pull through on the body of the instrument. Don’t use water anywhere except the mouthpiece. Check the screws

and the condition of the reed. Reeds that have gone green or brown should be thrown out.

Saxophones: Wash your mouthpiece under warm water and dry carefully. Remove any gunk that has built up. Use cork grease on

the cork on the goose neck. Don’t use water anywhere except the mouthpiece, the pull through should be used for the body of the

sax. Polish your sax to remove greasy fingerprints. Check the screws and the condition of the reed. Reeds that have gone green or

brown should be thrown out.

Trumpets: Trumpets get to have a water bath. Remove the valves first, these are not placed in the bath but washed by whisking

them and using the little brush to remove all gunk. The rest of the trumpet should be pulled apart and washed through to get all gunk

out. Use the trumpet cleaning kit. Dry by standing on end and turning so water can come out. Try not to put it back together until all

dry. Oil the valves and make sure you put them back in numbers, 1, 2 and 3 correctly. The numbers are written on the side. Each

valve needs to be ‘clicked’ by turning before tightening. If your trumpet won’t blow it is probably the valve not ‘clicked’ in place.

Polish your trumpet to remove greasy fingerprints.

Trombones: Trombones also get a water bath. The mouthpiece needs to be washed thoroughly and the trombone dried before

putting away. Polish your trombone to remove any greasy fingerprints.

Bass guitars: Check your lead is undamaged and in working order and clean the strings by wiping with a cloth. Polish the body of

the instrument to remove greasy fingerprints.

Senior Band

Rehearsal as normal this week and we are playing for the assembly on Friday. We will resume rehearsals in week 1 next term.

Year 4 Band

Year 4 is a difficult year in learning an instrument at Guardian Angels. For most players they soared ahead in leaps and bounds in

Year 3 practicing with enthusiasm but by Year 4 the gloss has worn off. This is the time to really get a practice routine going and

commit to learning even though it is difficult. I ask that students stay committed, be resilient and independent with their learning.

The band is building a great sound. We will perform on assembly in Term 3 so keep up the practice.

Mr. Harley is back from Long Service Leave next term. I would like to thank Mr. Valentine Jones and Mr. David Kemp for their

work at GA this term.

Kind regards,
