OAKHILL eBULLETIN—9th June 2016 : Oakhill.nsw.edu.au
On Friday the
College staff will
all be
participating in
our Spirituality
day. As a
community we
will journey to
the Cathedral at
Parramatta. Staff will have the
opportunity to view the holy door and
our guest speaker Br Sir Pat Lynch will
talk to the staff about Pope Francis’s
year of Mercy.
We were shown mercy yesterday for
the College Athletics carnival, held
under a cloudless sky. It is a wonderful
spectacle to see our young men and
women so invested in participation on a
day like this. Congratulations to those
students who broke records and all
whole participated. Our winning house –
Turon took the lead though the
exceptionally high levels of student
participation.
In stark contrast Gala Day must have
been a day of penance. Though again
such a powerful sense of how our
community is engaged and supportive
even in adverse conditions. I would like
to thank all of the families that donated,
wrapped, worked and attended on the
day. A special thanks to the hundreds of
students that where present to watch
the 1st XV’s play. It was an occasion to
be proud of.
Tonight Starlight Express opens, we wish

the cast and crew a hearty showbiz
“break a leg”. I am looking forward to
being in the audience this evening.
All of these incredible achievements
reflect and affirm the strength of our
community and our engagement, I
would now like to make an invitation.
Over the course of the last year the
College has been working through a
process where we access the capital
infrastructure requirements (buildings)
that will be required to support strong
teaching and learning into the future.
I would like to invite all families to
participate in a stakeholder forum
where the College will be collecting
data to inform the building of a Master
Plan which will guide the development
of a building program into the next ten
years.
There will be two opportunities for
families to provide insight into
perceived needs of the College.

GALA DAY SHINES DESPITE THE RAIN
Once again, Gala Day was a roaring success last Saturday despite the heavy rain, thanks to our Oakhill community of sponsors, families, students, staff, volunteers and the Gala Day organising committee.
Undeterred from the rain and muddy conditions, our sporting teams went on to play in true Oakhill spirit. Equally undeterred were our stall holders, volunteers and families, students and staff who braved the weather in support of this wonderful annual community event.
An integral part of the day has been our on-line raffle and this year was no exception with tickets being sold right up to the last minute. Our winner, Mr Nick Gooley, a member of our community, was overwhelmed as he was handed the keys to his new Hyundai, provided by Hyundai Castle Hill. Through the efforts of all involved, funds raised from this year’s Gala Day reached close to $35,000, a great result considering the wet weather conditions. These funds will go directly to the benefit of our students.
On behalf of the College and the College’s P&F, we thank you for all that you contributed to this great day. A big Oakhill thank you to Hyundai and all our sponsors.

Solidarity@Oakhill Report
Social Justice Evening at Mt St Benedict's College
Tuesday 31st May saw several concerned Oakhill students attend the social justice evening held at Mt St Benedict's. Best described as an evening to showcase various charity organisations and their contributions in our society and how they can be implemented into school life. Some of these organisations included Recognise, RREP, Caritas and the organisation that saw its founders win Australian of the year, Orange Sky Laundry. Two that really stood out for me were Recognise and RREP. One of my passions is sport so RREP really interested me, they source fair trade made sporting balls and school uniforms. This is something that I thought was extremely fascinating to be able to further understand Fair Trade and how the choice of balls used in schools can really make a difference. The Recognise Foundation however was the one organisation that I felt Oakhill as a community could really get behind. Recognise is an organisation trying to raise awareness to the flaws in our constitution which in 2016 still allows for discrimination. As I myself approach legal voting age it is definitely an area we can make a difference. To also see what other schools like Barker and Mt St Benedict's are doing in regards to social justice was very interesting and provided great insights and ideas. Thank you to Bennies for a great evening.

VISUAL ARTS NEWS
Artist of the Month – MAY 2016
Each month we look for a student who has shown exceptional application to their studies within visual arts. We identified Aaron Kustandi a year 9 Photography and Digital Media student who has shown dedication and enthusi-asm towards his work. This term students have been developing their Stop Motion Animations.
Setting the scene for Aaron’s stop motion animation:
In sport, two captains are picking teams. One guy never gets picked however, one day he does get picked and he is the strongest in the team. Here Aaron Kustandi is revisiting a popular fable ‘The Lion and the Mouse’ but chang-ing the narrative to reflect the world of a Year 9 Oakhillian. He is using Lego for his Stop Motion Animation and using backgrounds of the college campus.
These six images form .5 of a second of a 30 second animation.
Congratulations to Aaron for being awarded Artist of the Month for May.
