District Quiz Bowl Champions!
Valley View Elementary 3rd and 4th grade Quiz Bowl Teams became the District’s 2015-2016 Quiz Bowl Champions at the December competition. The two teams competed against other 3rd and 4th grade teams from within the district. The Quiz Bowl is a district wide academic competition initiated last year by our superintendent Mr. Ramirez. Each elementary sends a team of five 3rd grade students and a team of five 4th grade students. The competition is similar to the popular Master Minds Competition hosted by Channel 5’s Tim Smith. The 3rd grade team members are Melissa Juarez, Yulianna Saenz, Samuen Anguiano, Emiliano Sanchez, and Pedro Rios. The 4th grade team members are Renata Garcia, Julian Hernandez, Filiberto Rincon, Irineo Peralta, and Omar Martinez. Both teams were coached by Mrs. J. Gonzalez. Congratulations to both teams and their coach!
VVE Dance Team and Student Council Visit Local Adult Daycare Centers
Valley View Elementary Student Council and Dance Team visited two adult day cares in Hidalgo. The Student Council collected socks and donated them to the adults at the adult day care centers. The Dance Team danced for the residents. The residents loved their performance. We would like to thank Target, Wal-Mart, and VVE students and staff for their generous sock donations. We collected over 100 pairs of socks. Again, thank you!

As a reward for their hard work and dedication, Valley View Elementary faculty and staff treated all of their students to the “Alice in Wonderland Play” performed by the Valley View High School drama team at the high school auditorium. Our students and staff not only enjoyed the play, but were able to ask the cast questions after the play.

Nurse’s Corner:
Fight the Flu! Influenza: Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headaches
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
* It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. Flu is unpredictable and how severe it is can vary widely from one season to the next depending on many things, including:
what flu viruses are spreading,
how much flu vaccine is available,
when vaccine is available,
how many people get vaccinated, and
how well the flu vaccine is matched to flu viruses that are causing illness.
Who needs a flu vaccine? a) You b) You c) You d) All of the above
Even healthy people can get the flu, and it can be serious. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine. This means you. This season, protect yourself—and those around you—by getting a flu vaccine.
NO MORE EXCUSES---THERE ARE MANY PLACES TO GET YOUR FLU VACCINE

Library Matters at Valley View Elementary During the month of November, Valley View
Elementary students continued to be voracious
readers. They celebrated like champions, and worked
on a video entry to the Texas Library Media Awards.
Students were introduced to the book, “The Wall”
which is written by Eve Bunting. In addition, various
books about the armed services and Veteran
Memorials were on display during the month of
November. Students were encouraged to bring in
pictures of their relatives who are or were Veterans.
They discovered that servicemen hold a variety of jobs
such as engineers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, pilots, and
mechanics. The students brought pictures and the
Student Council members created a Veteran’s Honor
Wall for all to see. The students took great pride in
making a contribution and creating the Veteran Honor
Wall. Our 4th graders moved to make a video
adaptation of Red Skeleton’s Pledge of Allegiance monologue. The students have directed, produced the work
on the video production during the month of November. Upon return from the Christmas Break, the students
will be recording the video and submitting it in to the Texas Library Media Awards that same month.
To reward our students for their outstanding reading performance during the 2nd weeks, each Top Point AR Class
qualified to attend an educational excursion to
McCreery Aviation and Fire Station #4. Our
students were exposed to the operating procedures
of a private airport and an airport fire stations.
Valley View Elementary students at our campus are
actively involved in all activities associated with the
Valley View Elementary Accelerated Reader
Program, and without a doubt Library Matters @
Valley View Elementary.
To date, Valley View Elementary has a campus
participation rate of 98%. Our students have read
78,993 books and passed 73,396 quizzes. The
students have tallied a word count of 46,572,321
and have maintained an Average Percent Correct of
86.7 percent.
