PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

GROWING WITH THE COMMUNITY Welcoming, Engaging and Achieving

Our mission is to inspire the self belief and motivation in students that will enable them to achieve and grow.

CAPITAL WORKS UPDATE Over the last few weeks works have been continuing to finalise our gym including associated landscaping. You will also have seen that significant work has commenced to refurbish our prep building. The construction site around this area has been established and much work has already occurred to demolish internal walls to commence this terrific refurbishment.

Most of you have seen our wonderful new gym, visual arts, performing arts, sport/PE facility.

I’m sure you will agree it is a truly magnificent addition to our school. If you haven’t had an opportunity to see these facilities to date please walk by one morning or afternoon when you have a few minutes to spare. STAFFING NEWS We welcome Mr Brett Nathan to Carnegie PS as the year 3B teacher following the departure of Miss Kennedy last Friday. Miss Kennedy is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her baby. We wish Larissa all the best for the future. Brett has been a familiar face at Carnegie all year and is getting to really know our year 3 students.

ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 Plans for 2019 staffing are underway and budgets are being organised. To ensure the best possible outcomes for students and teachers, I am keen to organise plans for 2019 as soon as possible. To support this planning, please ensure your child has returned the form sent home last week which asks you if your child is remaining at Carnegie Primary School in 2019. The Orientation Program for 2019 Preps is on the four Wednesdays in November. The first two sessions run between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. The third and fourth sessions will be from 11.45am till 1.15pm. All 2019 Prep students are invited. If you would like further details please call into the office. IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES Year 1 to 6 pupils will resume on Thursday 31st January, 2019. Preps will commence on Friday 1st February. Please note the following dates in next year’s diary. The 29th and 30th January are scheduled pupil free days for 2019. On these days teachers will participate in professional development in preparation for a smooth start to the school year. WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY Friday 26th October is World Teachers’ Day. The UNESCO has declared World Teachers’ Day and it is a great opportunity for us to say ‘Thank You’ to the teachers at our school and acknowledge their professionalism and commitment to ensuring the students at Carnegie Primary School are cared for and well supported in their primary school education. SUN SMART FOR TERM FOUR By now all students should be wearing their sun smart hat when playing outside at recess and lunch breaks. School hats can be purchased from our Uniform Shop. Your support for this school rule is greatly appreciated as it is important we educate our students about sun smart protection strategies and the harmful effects of the sun during our warmer weather. Please note that caps are not sun smart hats. COMMUNITY TREE PLANTNG IN CARNEGIE Last week we were asked to support a community planting event organised by the Level Crossing Removal Authority. As most of you are aware they are now in the process of preparing the space underneath the new sky rail which involves significant redevelopment and landscaping.

Aneesh, Advika and Shourya, three of our year 6 Envirostars walked to Carnegie and assisted in planting a number of native grasses and small shrubs along with some volunteers from local Rotary and Lions clubs. We were given

an overview of the project and a tour of the area between Koornang Road and Grange Road. It will be terrific to see this public space become available for all to enjoy before too long. BUSH KINDER – STAGE ONE COMPLETE Over the holiday break Stage 1 of the Bush Kinder project was undertaken and if you have had the opportunity to see that corner of our school yard, adjacent to the kinder, you will be amazed at the transformation. This area will not be accessible for a while to allow the establishment of the plants. The kinder children have been out keenly watering over some of these warmer days. Natalie, from the kinder will make time to speak to our classes to explain all the ideas behind the development of this space, how to use it creatively and to ensure we enjoy but also respectfully care for it so it thrives. There are plans for further stages but for now we will watch this area flourish. I would again like to thank all those involved in the development of this space and thank them for volunteering many hours of their time. WORDS OF WISDOM

FIVE FORGOTTEN SKILLS TO SUCCESS Parenting Ideas by Michael Grose At a time when we hear a great deal about growth mindsets, good mental health habits and creating digitally savvy students, we can easily overlook the skill sets that form the building blocks of long-term school success. These are skill sets that are also easily forgotten when we narrow our focus onto numeracy, literacy, performing arts, STEM and other academic areas. While all these other mental skills and academic areas are important, the skills I want to focus on here are ones that can be taught, or at the very least drawn out, alongside every other skill when we as parents and teachers know what to look for. Following are five skill sets that contribute massively to overall student success and contentedness at school. 1. Friendship skills The ability to get along with others is hugely important for children and teenagers. Those students with a strong set of friendship skills are easy to like, easy to relate to and easy to play with. The skills they possess include knowing how to win and lose well, how to approach others to join in a group and how to lead rather than boss. 2. Organisational skills The ability to organise your time, your space, your items and other aspects of your life is a massive plus for any student. The best way to help children who are organisationally challenged is to introduce them to systems and processes to help them organise themselves. These processes include the use of visual reminders, anchoring (i.e. linking new behaviours to habitual behaviours) and the mapping out of activities. 3. Optimism skills It may seem strange to see optimism as skill set, but as leading psychologist Professor Martin Seligman discovered through his research, optimism can be taught. Seligman found that while some children are more inclined by nature to see a glass as half empty than half full, all children are capable

of developing an optimistic explanatory style through exposure and direct teaching. The skills of optimism include being aware of self-talk, reframing negative events into positive events and the practice of perspective-taking. 4. Coping skills Kids will generally face a number of challenges during the course of their school lives including overcoming the disappointment of not being picked on a team, working their way through difficult learning situations and dealing with rejection. The impact of these challenges will depend on each kid's own spirit, the support they receive and their coping skills. The good news is that coping skills can be taught or, at the very least, encouraged if adults know what to focus on. Coping strategies include parking problems for a while, normalising difficult situations and accepting and moving on. Some kids will use coping strategies quite naturally, while others need parental and teacher input to help them cope with even seemingly minor challenges. 5. Relaxation skills The ability to relax and get away from it all is vital for the maintenance of mental health, which in turn affects a student's ability to perform. Many of today's kids live with pres-sure. That pressure needs to be released through relaxation and play, otherwise it can lead to anxiety and other mental illnesses. The ability to relax and unwind is paramount to your child's school success. Relaxation techniques include mindfulness and meditation, participating in hobbies and enjoying creative pursuits. These skills are part developmental and part environmental. That is, kids will naturally develop many of them as they mature but the skills also need to be nurtured environmentally. They need to be recognised, encouraged, taught and modelled by adults who children and teenagers respect and admire. That makes parents and teachers 'Very Important People' in the process of acquiring them.

Arts News Meet the artists!

Have YOU met Tom Roberts or Eugene von Guerard? Our Year 5 artists have been learning about Roberts and von Guerard and studying their art works. They will visit the Art Gallery of Ballarat as part of the Year 5 Camp and view the original paintings. Here are some of our students’ thoughts and observations when looking at these works of art. Charcoal Burners by Tom Roberts.

In this picture there are lots of gum trees and three men digging. - Yug and William

This picture tells us how life was hard. Work had to be done just to be warm or cook. – Oliver and Max

The men are chopping wood, drinking and burning charcoal. – Dylan and Shashank

The artist is trying to tell us that in the past you had to work hard to get what you needed to survive.—Addison and Natalia.

We noticed that there are no trees so the men have been working all day in trousers and a shirt so the insects don’t bite them and they don’t get sun burn. – Jade and Patrick

The artist is trying to show how people in the past lived, worked and how they survived. - Destiny and Sunday

It looks like the men are working very hard as they are not using any machinery. Back in these times the machines were not invented so they had to use axes to chop up wood. – Chi and Tommy.

Old Ballarat by Eugene von Guerard There’s a lot of tents instead of houses. – Oscar and Gregory

This painting reminds us of how things were in the past and teaches us about history – Nia and Faiza

Von Guerard painted this picture be-cause he was passionate about old Ballarat. – Rory and Harper.

If someone had this painting today they could sell it for a lot of money. – Marko and Noah

This painting interests us because we are intrigued by the 1850’s and gold rush times. We wonder how we would feel if we had to live in one of the small tents.– Olivia, Mika and Grace.

A CPS PARENT’S INITIATIVE Our daughter in Year 5 is interested in learning Australian Sign Language. We could obtain a DVD,

but then we realised there may be other CPS students who may be interested in sign language.

LEARN TO COMMUNICATE IN AUSLAN

We did some research and found The Auslan Company. Victorian-based, established in 2004, and “the only Deaf owned and operated Auslan Training Organisation that combines Auslan community courses, Auslan in the workplace and Deaf Awareness Training within its’ scope. Their teachers are all Native Deaf and qualified Auslan teachers who are well known and respected in the Deaf community.” More info: https://www.learnauslan.com.au/

We are therefore seeking at least 10 students in Years 4 – 6 to get the course running.

School aged girls are invited to come along to our Open Day on Sun-day October 28 to try our fun and inclusive classes and learn more about be-ing part of the AGC! Please contact us if you would like to attend the Open Day. Ph 9859 6499 or email [email protected]

For more than 30 years, the Australian Girls Choir has played a role in the growth and development of girls across the country. We provide an experience that goes far beyond the stage; your daughter will develop confidence, public speaking and presentation skills, resilience and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Our senior performers have entertained everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Oprah, and have shared the stage with a long list of artists including Hugh Jackman and Pharrell Williams. For the past 20 years, we’ve been proud to represent Qantas at live events and in the ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ advertising campaigns.

Now accepting 2019 enrolments for our rehearsal venues in Berwick, Box Hill, Caulfield North, Cheltenham, Essendon, Ivanhoe, Kew, Ringwood and Yarraville.
