AthleticPhilosophy PrincetonDaySchooloffersanextensiveinterscholasticathleticprogram,whichincludes25sportsand74teams.Over50%ofourstudentsenrolledintheUpperSchoolandover85%intheMiddleSchoolparticipateonaninterscholasticteam.AthleticsatPrincetonDaySchoolplayanintegralroleintheoveralleducationofeachstudent.Webelieveintheclassicalidealof"menssanaincorporesano”--asoundmindinasoundbody--withadedicationtothelastingvaluesofpersonalintegrity,responsibility,commitment,teamworkandsportsmanship.Theprogramisextensiveenoughtopreparegiftedathletestocompeteatthecollegelevelwhilealsoensuringthatallstudentsareexposedtothelifelongbenefitsofathleticsandphysicalfitness.AttheMiddleSchoollevel,ourprogramservesasatransitionfromrecreationalplaytoamoreorganizedandstructuredteamactivity.Participationisourprimarygoal,alongwithdevelopingathleticskillsandasenseofresponsibilityandcommitmenttotheteam.AttheUpperSchoollevel,thejuniorvarsityteamsaregearedtowardlearningthefundamentalskillsneededinordertoplayatamorecompetitivelevel.Atthisdevelopmentalstage,playingtimeisearnedbydemonstratingbothsincerecommitmentandnecessaryskills.ThesuccessofourJVprogramisnotdefinedbyitsrecord,butbyitslevelofimprovementthroughoutthecourseoftheseason.Ourfinestathletesintermsofability,andattitudearechosentorepresentourSchoolinvarsityinterscholasticcompetition.Atthislevelweexpectcompletecommitmenttotheteam.Inordertomaximizesuccess,playingtimeandotherstrategicdecisionsaredeterminedsolelybythecoachingstaff.Westrivetowinbutouremphasisisnotonwinningatanycost.Personalintegrity,responsibility,commitment,teamworkandsportsmanshipremainourhighestpriorities. UpperSchoolTeamPhilosophyVarsityOurfinestathletesintermsofabilityandattitudearechosentorepresentourschoolinvarsityinterscholasticcompetition.Atthislevelweexpectacompletecommitmenttotheteam.Inordertomaximizesuccess,playingtimeandotherstrategicdecisionsaredeterminedsolelybythecoachingstaff.Thus,theremaybecontestsinwhichsomeathletesdonotplay.Varsityathletesareexpectedtostriveforexcellenceintheirsport(s),attendcampsandclinics,andtotrainundertheguidanceofourSportsPerformanceCoach.Weaskparentstobemindfulnottoscheduleappointmentsand/orvacationtimethatconflictswithvarsitypracticeorgametimes.Itisimportanttothesuccessoftheteamandtothedevelopmentofyourchildthatheorshecommitsfullytotheteam.

JuniorVarsityJuniorvarsityteamsaregearedtowardlearningandimprovingthefundamentalskillsneededinordertoplayatamorecompetitivelevel.Atthisdevelopmentalstage,coachesattempttogiveallplayersadequateplayingtime,buttheyalsotakeintoaccountcommitment,attitude,andgamesituations.ThesuccessofaJVprogramshouldnotnecessarilybedefinedbyitsrecord,butbyindividualandteamimprovementthroughouttheseason.MiddleSchoolTeamPhilosophyBypromotingparticipation,ourMiddleSchoolprogramprovidesinterestedstudentsaninterscholasticsportsprogramwhichwefeelisageappropriateforsixth,seventhandeighthgraders.OurgoalsfortheMiddleSchoolprogramareto:

Coachesdotheirbesttogiveeachplayerasmuchplayingtimeaspossible,butarealsomindfuloftheimportanceofkeepingthegamecompetitive.AttheMiddleSchoollevel,wheneverpossible,wefieldbotha“blue“anda“white”teamforeachsport.The"blue"teamisthemoreexperiencedgroupandisgenerallycomprisedmostlyofeighthgraderswithseveralwell-skilledyoungerathletesfromtheseventhandpossiblesixthgrades.The"white"team(s)mayincludesixth,seventhandeighthgraders.Whennecessary,asecond“white”teamwillbecreatedtoaccommodateinterest.MSPractice/GameInformation&Guidelines Athleticspracticesorgameswilltakeplaceoncycledays1,2,4,5,6.

ThoughgamesmaybescheduledonDay1,2,4,5,or6,theAthleticsDepartmentaimstoclustermanygamesonDay7.DuringFallandSpringseasons,practiceswilloccurfrom2:20-3:45p.m.onDays1,2,4,5,6.DuringtheWinterseasononly,staggeredpractice/studyhallswilloccurfrom2:20-4p.m.onDays1,2,4,5,6.Teamswillpracticeforaportionorallofthe2:20-4p.m.timeframeandthiswillensureamplepracticetimeforathletesonsharedindoorcourtspaces.Day3remainsaRestDayduringwinterseason(nopractice).Day7remainsaGame/ScrimmageDayorRestDayinwinterseason(nopractice,butrefertoyourgameschedulepersport).

● Intheeventofinclementweather,FallandSpringsportswilldismissat3:20pmsothatthosekidswhoneedtocanridethebuseshome.

● AparentmeetingismandatoryandespeciallyimportantsincePDSAthleticswillbeanewexperienceformanyofourparentsandstudents.Coacheswillcontactparentstosetupaparentmeetingpriortooratthefirstgameoftheseason.

● Coacheswillcreateaparentemailaddresslistandtouchbaseonweeklybasis.CommunicationisthemostimportantthingintheMiddleSchool.Communicatewithyourcoachoftenwhenyouhavequestions.

● ParticipationisaprimarygoalintheMS.Wewillmakeeveryefforttoaccommodateallskilllevelstomeetourathletesattheirlevel.Weaimtobeascompetitiveaswecanwhilekeepingthegoaltohelpourathletesimprove.

● Therearetimeswhenweneededtolimitthenumberofparticipantsinaparticularsportduetofacilitiesrestrictions.MSSquashislimitedtoparticipationof7-8thgradersduetoourlimitedspace.

● Practicesarenevercanceled.Ifnotoutdoors,wewillmeetindoorsandmovetoour“inclementweatherschedule”anddismissat3:20onthesedays.

● Educateourstudent-athletesbyteachingpersonalqualities,suchasintegrity,responsibility,commitment,teamwork,andsportsmanship.

● Measureyoursuccessbyyourabilitytoinfluenceyourstudent-athletesinthreeareas:Effort,Teamwork,andAttitude(ETA).

● Ensurethatthesafetyandwelfareofyourplayersremainyourfirstpriority. ● Discourageallformsofplayerridiculeandhazing. ● Respectthejudgmentandinterpretationsoftheofficials. ● Refrainfromusinganyprofanityorabusivelanguage. ● Emphasizetoyourplayerstheimportanceofdoingtheirverybestinallareasofschool.

● Workto“recruit”ourmiddleschoolathletes;makethemfeelasappreciatedandwantedasthosefromoffcampus.

● WorkwiththeAthleticsandAdmissionsDepartmenttohelpidentifyandattractstudent-athletesfromotherschools.

● WorkwithCollegeCounseling’sAthleticsLiaisontoidentifyschoolsforplayerswhohaveexpressedinterestinplayingcollegeathletics.

● Keepaccurateandup-to-datestatistics,alongwithanyindividualandteamawards,recognition.Aseasonendformforvarsityteamswillbekeptonfileintheathleticoffice(seeappendixforform).

● Communicatewithlocalmediatomakesureallgamescoresandstatisticsarereportedconsistently.Besurethatallcommentsarepositiveandcomplimentary.NewspapercontactinformationincludedintheAppendix.

● AttendlocalNewJerseyNJISAAcoachingclinicseachyear.

TeamSelectionProcess Althoughwewouldliketohaveeveryplayerwhotriesoutforateamearnaspotontheteamheorshedesires,thisisunfortunatelynotalwayspossible.Constraintsonpracticefacilities,teamsize,

skilllevelandstudentinterest,maymakeitnecessarytolimitthenumbersofplayersonaparticularteamorprogram.Allinterestedmiddleschoolathleteswillbeplacedonateamthatfitshis/herskilllevelwhetheritbeBlue,WhiteorWhite2teams.Weplacethehighestpriorityonfindingqualityathleticexperiencesforallofourstudentathletes,andplacingtheathleteontheappropriateskilllevelteamisthefirststepinthis.Thoughrare,rosterlimitationmaybenecessaryforcertainsportsthathavefacilitieslimitations.Since"cuts"aredifficultatanyage,thecoachingstaffwillmakeeveryefforttohandlethesesituationswithtactandsensitivity.CoachesmustmeetwiththeDirectorofAthleticsthroughoutthemiddleschoolteamselectionprocessandbeforemakingfinalrosterdecisions.PDSwillensurethatallinterestedplayerswillbeaffordedathree-dayevaluationprocesstoselectplayersontoappropriateteams.Ifanyathleteisrequiredtobe“cut”fromateam,thecoachmustdiscusswiththeDirectorofAthleticsforapprovalpriortoconsultingindividuallyandprivatelywiththeindividual(s)aboutthedecision.Ifpossible,coacheswilldiscussotherformsofinvolvementwiththeteamsuchasmanagingorscorekeeping. CaptainSelection

Itisrecommendedthatcaptainsareselectedforeachvarsityteam.Thisisanimportantofficeandselectionshouldnotbetakenlightly.Coacheswillleadtheselection,butplayerscanbeinvolvedinasecretballot.Twotofourcaptainsshouldbeselected,andthenomineesshouldbeupperclassmen.Captainsshouldbeselectedjustpriortotheupcomingseasonandnotattheendofaseasonforthenextyear.Varsityteamswhowanttohaveleadersfortheoff-seasoncanappointunofficial“offseasoncaptains”toleadoff-seasonworkouts,butformalcaptainswillbeselectedintheweeksprecedingtheseason.

● AttheJuniorVarsitylevel:captainsareoptional. ● AttheMiddleSchoollevel:honoraryweeklyorgamedaycaptainsispolicy.

UpperSchoolManagers Varsityandjuniorvarsityteamsmayfinditnecessaryandhelpfultohaveateammanagerormanagers.Themanagerrolemayincludeassistingwithscoringandtiming,settingupplayingareas,keepingtrackofequipmentandinventories,keepingstatsandfilming.**Managersreceivecommunityservicehoursandnotagrade.**

InaccordancewithNJSIAA,thefollowingguidelinesareineffectforallPDSteamsandplayers.

● Playerso Allathletesmusthaveparticipatedin5daysofpracticebeforeplayinginacontest.

Thisappliestoallathleteswhomayhavejoinedateamafterthestartoftheseason.o Athleteswhoswitchteamsduringsameseasonmustpractice3daysbeforegame

playo Athleteswhojointheteamafterlengthyinjuryorillnessmustpractice5dayswith

theAthleticTrainer'sapprovalbeforegameplay.o Athleteswhoparticipateinfootballmustbeginwith3daysofnocontact.

PlayerExpectations

● AthletesonalllevelsareexpectedtoattendALLschoolpracticesandgames.● PDSdoesn’ttolerateanyformofplayerhazingwhetherthereiswillfulparticipationornot. ● AllunexcusedabsenceswillbetreatedasaclasscutandwillbereportedtotheMS/US

office. ● Athleticparticipationisaprivilegeandnotaright.Theuseofdrugs,tobaccooralcoholis

harmfultopersonalhealthandunderminesthemissionofathletics.Therefore,theuse,orpossessionisconsideredaviolationofone'scommitmenttoteamandwillresultinsuspensionordismissal.

● AthletesmaynotswitchsportsduringtheseasonwithoutpriorpermissionofboththeHeadCoachandtheAthleticDirector.

● Ifanathletewithdraws,orisaskedtoleaveateam,he/shemustreturnallissuedequipmentimmediately.

● IntheMiddleSchool,ifanathletewithdrawsfromateam,he/shemustenrollintheSports&Activitiesclassthefollowingdayasnecessary.

● Intheeventofanearlydismissalfromschoolforacontest,studentsareexpectedtomeetwiththeirteachersbeforehandtomakeupanyworkthattheywillmiss.

● Athletesareresponsiblefortheiruniformsandallissuedequipment.LossofanyequipmentorPDSpropertywillresultintheathletebeingchargedatthecostofre-purchasingtheitem(s)plusare-orderfeeofuptohalfthevalueoftheitem.

o Athleteswillnotbeallowedtotryoutforateamuntilallschoolissuedequipmentanduniformsfromthepriorseasonhavebeenaccountedfor.

● Athletesarerequiredtoattendtheseason-end(US)oryear-end(MS)awardsceremony. PlayerSuspension

SuspensionsandsanctionsareasensitiveissueforallsotheA.D.mustbeconsultedbeforeaction.TheheadcoachmaysuspendanathletefromparticipationonlyafterconsultationwiththeA.D.Offensesthatmayprovokedisciplinaryactioninclude,butarenotlimitedto:

● theuseofprofanity● excessivetardiness● unsportsmanlikebehavior● missingapracticeorgamewithoutareasonableexcuse● useofalcohol,drugsorotherbannedsubstance

NOTE:Aplayerorcoachdisqualificationsfromacontestresultsinanautomatictwogamesuspensionperleaguerules.StudentAthleteConcussionReturntoPlayProtocolOnceastudentathletesustainsaheadinjurywhichisthendiagnosedbyaphysicianasaconcussion,thestudentathletewillbeputintotheReturntoPlayProtocol.Step1-Oncethestudentathleteisasymptomatic,heorshewilltakeapost-concussionImPACTtest.Theresultsofthistestwillbecomparedtothebaselinetestthestudentathletetookearlieratthebeginningoftheschoolyear.Ifresultsareproblemfreeandthestudentathletehasnorecurrenceofanysymptomsfor24hoursheorshewillthenprogresstostep2.Step2-Exertionaltest.ThiswillbedoneonatreadmillorstationarybikeasadministeredbytheAthleticTrainer.Ifstudentathletedoesnotexperienceanysymptomsfor24hoursheorshewillprogresstostep3.Step3-Modified/non-contactpracticewithteam.Thiscanconsistofjogging,running,skilldrills.Ifstudentathletedoesnotexperienceanysymptomsfor24hoursheorshewillprogresstostep4.Step4-Fullcontactpracticewithteamwithnorestrictions.Ifstudentathletedoesnotexperienceanysymptomsfor24hoursheorshewillprogresstostep5.

Step5-Fullreturntoplaywithnorestrictions.

Ifatanytimeduringthisreturntoplayprotocolthestudentathletedevelopssymptomsheorshewillrevertbacktopreviousstepandthenprogressasstatedabove.TransportationGuidelinesForsafetyandlegalreasons,PDSprovidestransportationtoandfromallawaygames.Thefollowingproceduresshouldbefollowed:

● Coachesmusttravelwiththeteamandmaintainteamcontrol. ● CoachesmusthaveacellphoneandaPDSEmergencyPhone#Card. ● Teamsmustbepromptandreadyfordepartureatspecifiedtimes. ● Teamsmustensurethatthebusisleftclean. ● Coachesmustensurethatallmembersoftheteamtraveltoandfromgamesonthebus.Ifit

isabsolutelycriticalforastudenttouseothermeansoftransportation,heorshemaydosoonlyiftheparent(s)havegivenwrittenorverbalpermissiontothecoachorathleticdepartment.

● Withtheheadcoach'spermission,parentsinattendancemaytransporttheirchildhomeafteranawaygame.

● Appropriatedressisexpectedfortravelwhenteamischangingatvisitingsite.Thiswillbecommunicatedbytheheadcoach.

AthleticGrades&Reports TheheadcoachofeachteamwilldraftaPass/Failgradeandanathleticcommentforallteammembersattheendoftheseason.GradesandreportsaretobecompletedusingFAWeb.Gradesandcommentsaredueattheendofeachseason. SportsmanshipDemonstrategoodsportsmanshipatalltimes-towardsopponents,coaches,teammates,officials,andotherspectators.Weaskthisofourplayersanditisparamountthattheirrolemodelsdothesame.

Non-DiscriminationandNon-HarassmentPolicy

- AsidefromtheuseofapprovedofficialPDSelectroniccommunicationsystems,facultyandstaffshouldnothavedirect,one-on-oneelectroniccontactwithstudents.
