A Message from the Principal/Vice Principal… Prince Philip continues to be one busy place and we, as a staff, couldn’t be more proud of our students. Highlights include 33 students qualifying for the DSBN Cross Country Meet, representing Prince Philip very well! Our girls’ intermediate volleyball team made it to the quarter finals at the recent John Haeni tournament. The boys’ intermediate volleyball team’s tournament is coming up and our junior teams are just getting started. Nine students from our Me to We group enjoyed a unique experience travelling to Toronto for WE day and also successfully carried out an amazing We Scare Hunger food drive along with the Halloween dance to support Project Share. Our Student Leadership Council has been finalized and have taken on the daunting task of running our Student of the Month Character assemblies. We look forward to seeing all of the wonderful activities they will provide to help make our school the place to be! There are so many exciting opportunities here at Prince Philip, encourage your child to get involved!
Our School Advisory Council members did not waste any time getting to work and are busy planning the Holiday Basket fundraiser. Our next School Advisory Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 28rd, 6:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons. All parents are welcome to attend. Minutes of all meetings are posted on our website as soon as they are available. L. Tisi and P. McIntee
THE ELEMENTARY PROGRESS REPORT – KINDERGARTEN – GRADE 8… On November 10th, your child will bring home their Elementary Progress Report. The format was
created after years of consultation with parents, teachers, principals and students across the
province. Although it looks much like the Report Card, the Progress Report has a very different
intent. The purpose is to share early and specific feedback on your child’s development of work
habits and learning skills as well as his/her progress towards achieving the curriculum standards by
the end of the school year.
Reporting on the Progress Report is about looking forward and setting a course for the learning
journey ahead. Based on the evidence that teachers see, as well as what teachers know about
learning at this grade level, the report communicates the path your child is on towards achieving the
grade level expectations by the end of the year. The Progress Report does not include letter
grades or percentage marks for academic subjects; it instead identifies whether your child is
progressing very well, well or with difficulty. For subjects in which your child is Progressing with
Difficulty, the teacher will discuss specific next step plans needed for success. We look forward
to partnering with you and your child for a year of great learning and growth.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Thursday, November 9th – Progress Reports home
Thursday, November 16th – Interviews/Student Led Conferencing
Friday, November 17th - P.A. Day
Tuesday, December 12th – Holiday Concert
PARENT REMINDER... If you are picking up your children at the end of the day, PLEASE write a note
to your classroom teacher in your child's agenda. Due to the number of phone
calls we receive at the end of the day, it is difficult, at times, for us to ensure
we can get the message to your child prior to boarding the school buses. IN
case of emergency and unforeseen circumstances, please do not hesitate to call
ane we will assist. Thank you for your co-operation.
REMEMBRANCE DAY... On Friday, November 10th, we will be holding two special assemblies, Juniors at
9:15 a.m. and Intermediates at 10:50 a.m. to help our students understand the
significance of this special day. Poppies will be distributed by the Legion. Donations
are appreciated. Any students involved in cadets, brownies, girl guides or boy scouts
are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Parents, as always, are welcome to join us!
Thank you to Mme Berman and Mr. Mus volunteering and organizing this important
assembly.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR...
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming! From Tuesday, Nov. 14th until
Nov. 16th, including the evening, the "Saddle Up and Read" Scholastic
Book Fair will be at Prince Philip school. Please make sure you check
out the flyer coming home to see some of the new titles that will be
available for students to purchase. Also, every student has a chance
to win $25 worth of books for themselves and their class by filling
out the ballot on the back of the flyer. Be sure to stop in at the
Learning Commons “to saddle up and read”!
QSP “MAGAZINE AND MEMORIES” FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN...
THANK YOU! …The students and staff of Prince Philip would like to
thank everyone who assisted in making our recent magazine
subscription a great success this year. Without the support of our
community, we could not compliment our library, physical education
and classroom resources and our Gr. 7&8 students would not be able
to contribute to their year-end trip. In a short time, we made well
over $ 8 600 in sales!
PLEASE NOTE: new magazine subscriptions can take up to 12-16 weeks for the first issue to arrive
due to publishers’ schedules. Online orders may begin sooner. Students will receive their fundraising
prizes in the near future. All of your subscriptions are guaranteed 100%. If you have any service
concerns, please contact QSP at 1-800-667-2536 or [email protected] (not the school
office). As a reminder, you may continue to order magazines and/or photo products on-line
throughout the school year at www.qsp.ca – our school code is 3715430 and Prince Philip will continue
to earn profit on any subsequent orders!
We’re on the web!

Math Minutes…
In most of our math classes, students are just wrapping up units related to geometry and spatial
sense. In November, classes will be moving on to units related to measurement. Remember, parents
can always view the Ontario Curriculum—Grades 1 to 8: Mathematics by visiting the Ministry of
Education website.
At Prince Philip, we continue to encourage all students in Grades 4 through 8 to spend at least 1
hour per week (3-5 lessons) on DreamBox Learning®'s Math Program (sessions should be at least 20
minutes in length). This program supports students in developing various models for thinking and
reinforces important mathematical topics.
In order to promote this very valuable program, we are continuing our DreamBox Challenge at Prince
Philip. For this challenge, we calculate the number of lessons completed during each month for each
class. The top 3 classes with the highest number of completed lessons for each month will earn
classroom incentive. October’s winning junior classes were Mme Provenzano’, Mme Coles, and
Mme Davis’s classes. October’s winning Intermediate classes were; Mlle. Demers, Mlle. Gillen, and
Mlle. Clarke’s classes. Each class will decide how they celebrate their hard work. The mean
completed lessons amongst the intermediate students was 27 and the junior means is 37!!!
We also honour the students who complete the most lessons each month. These students have their
names posted in the front hall and their names get entered into a draw to take place at the end of
the month. For October, we had 86 students entered in the draw and four lucky students were
drawn and won Tim’s, Starbuck’s Walmart, and Cineplex gift cards. Ainsley B completed the most
lessons last month (275) and she also won a Walmart gift card.
October Top 10 (Lesson Completion)
1. Ainsley B (7D)
2. Charlotte B. (7D)
3. Sarah V. (8C)
4. Betul A. (5D)
5. Jennifer Z. (7I)
6. Suebin C. (8C)
7. Matteo Y. (5P)
8. Fiona C. (7G)
9. Stephanie T. (5D)
10. Arshpreet S. (7G)
This challenge will run all year! As students work through DreamBox, their lessons will become
more challenging and that means that not as many lessons may be completed. We have been
reminding students that the value of this program is the thinking it requires and that the struggle
is valuable. If it gets too challenging, students may speak to their teacher about having their level
reset. Ultimately, it is not about the number of lessons completed but rather it is about the
learning! The prizes and the fun of the competition are bonuses!
Grade 8 Students and Parents: Mark Your Calendars!
Starting high school is a huge step in a student's life. While it's definitely an exciting time, it also
brings with it many questions, such as "What's life in high school really like? What programs and
options are available to help me achieve my goals?" A great way to have your questions answered is
to attend an open house. Grade 8 students and their families are invited to attend High School
Open Houses from Nov. 27 to Nov. 30.

Me to We A huge thank you to our Prince Philip community for their generosity! Our Halloween Dance to
support Project Share was hugely successful. We collected over 800 non-perishable food items and
$126.00 in support of Project Share! Well done, Prince Philip!
Our next Me to We fundraiser will be coming soon!
The Junior Co-ed Rugby team had an exciting finish to the season. On
Wednesday Oct 26th, after round robin play, and a double overtime
semi-final win, the team advanced to the finals of the Rugby Tournament!
We lost a close game to Power Glen. Great passing and team play were
evident in all games. Thank you to Mr. Cournoyea for helping to coach the
team. Congratulations team!
This year our Cross Country Team had 46 members, all of
whom gave it their all during our area meets. Thirty-three of
our members advanced to the District Meet at Fireman’s Park
on October 16th. We are very proud of how well our team
represented Prince Philip! Noah L. competed in the Bantam
division and brought back a 3rd place ribbon. Congratulations
to all of our team members for their effort and dedication!
Eco-Club Members of the Eco-Club are beginning the process of turning Prince Philip
School into an Eco-school. They are surveying classes about their recycling
habits and are collecting used batteries to keep them out of the landfills.
To conserve energy, the club is encouraging classrooms to keep the lights
out during lunches on Wednesdays! Stay tuned for more initiatives
throughout the year!
Message from our ESL teacher:
ALL parents can be helpful in their children's literacy development, regardless of their language,
education, or literacy level. Parents who speak little or no English can contribute to their children's
education in valuable ways. The experts say, “Student’s with well-developed skills in their first
language have been shown to acquire an additional language more easily and fully and that, in turn,
has a positive impact on academic achievement.” (Genesee, Lindholm-Leary, Saunders, and Christian.
Educating English Language Learners: A Synthesis of Research Evidence. Cambridge University
Press, 2006.) Quoted from the Ontario Ministry of Education document “Supporting English
Language Learners Grades 1 to 8 (page 9).
There are many ways parents can develop their children's oral language skills and support their
literacy efforts. Here are a few ideas:
Story-telling (Oral Traditions)
“READ” picture books – make up stories, predict outcomes, etc.
Say Rhymes, Sing Songs
Play with words in all languages – make drawings with letters to learn and explore a
‘new’ alphabet
Do use visual aids and picture dictionaries
Multi-lingual books are available on the Internet
Visit your local library for free courses, story time, tech courses and activities.
Use TV as an educational tool, watch children’s TV together
Find a ‘student’ tutor within your community
Start a ‘home library’ with books in any language
Talk often about school and what is being learned

Holiday Basket
Raffle
Dear Prince Philip Families,
Thank you to all the families that contributed to previous year’s Holiday Basket Raffle. As this seems to be
enjoyed by everyone we are doing it again this year.
As in previous years’ classes will be assigned a theme and families are invited to contribute items related to
that theme. In an effort to get some items and create baskets that are of interest to our senior students we
have opted to ask all the Grade 8 classes to donate either money or tech items or gift cards. All money
collected will be used to purchase items or gift cards in a hope to create a few baskets that contain items that
will interest the older students.
If you have things that may not fit the theme assigned to your student feel free to send them in. ALL
donations are greatly appreciated and will be collected from now until Friday, December 1st. We look forward
to receiving lots of great items this year.
The Baskets will be displayed in the school from December 6th through December 14th to allow children,
teachers and parents or guardians to purchase tickets. Draws will be held in the morning on Friday December
15th.
As per previous years’ tickets will be $5.00 for a sheet of tickets and will be available for purchase at the
school. All monies raised will be to purchase and improve the outdoor equipment and play area for all students
to access.
