We would like to extend our sincere

thanks to all members of our school com-

Should you have any questions or con-

work together to ensure your child’s suc-

cess. We believe a strong partnership

between home and school is essential!

As part of ongoing job action, the Ca-

(CUPE) have launched the next phase of

their Work to Rule Protocol. While

Phase 2 restricts CUPE members from

performing specific duties, they (along

with all Prince Philip staff) will continue

to support our school to maintain student

safety, which remains our top priority

during this time. Without the full support

of CUPE and ETFO members however,

we have had to temporarily postpone

certain school events (e.g., Open House,

Pizza Days, fundraising, etc.). This also

means that classroom web sites are not

being updated for the time being. Most

importantly though, children are learn-

ing and they are safe. We will continue

to provide you with timely information

as it arises. If you have questions about

labour action, please visit our website

Good Character at Prince Philip

In September, Prince Philip staff were on the lookout for students who consistently

demonstrated RESPECT for themselves and for those around them. The students listed

below met that criteria and set a positive example for others in the Prince Philip

community. They will have their pictures placed on Prince Philip’s Tableau d’honneur/

Wall of Fame and they will be recognized at an assembly later this month. Congrat-

Breakfast Club to Return

Brought back by popular demand, Prince Philip is gearing up again for the

launch of our Breakfast Club this year. We are looking for parent volunteers who

would be willing and interested in helping prepare food and/or supervise stu-

dents accessing the Club. Any kind of commitment- whether daily, weekly, or

monthly- is appreciated! We would need help from approximately 7:30 a.m. to

8:30 a.m. for 20 minute increments. Please contact Mme. Ahmed if you are inter-

ested in volunteering ([email protected]). Thank you for helping us

make such a valuable and positive space for our students.

Grade 8 Students and Parents: Mark Your Calendars!

Starting high school is a huge step in a student's life. While it's definitely an exciting

time, it also brings with it many questions, such as "What's life in high school really

like? What programs and options are available to help me achieve my goals?"

A great way to have your questions answered is to attend a DSBN open house.

Grade 8 students and their families are invited to attend DSBN High School Open

Houses from November 30 – December 3. There is also information about open

houses at http://www.dsbn.org/redcarpet. You will find dates of all DSBN High

School Open Houses at the web site.

Once classes have wrapped up

their patterning and algebra units,

they will be moving onto geome-

try and spatial sense. In this next

unit students will be:

Exploring concepts related to

two– and three– dimensional

shapes and figures (Gr 4

through 6)

Exploring concepts related to

sorting and classifying

shapes, constructions, congru-

ence and similarity, transfor-

mations, the Cartesian coor-

dinate plane (Gr 7 and Gr

Remember, parents can always

view the Ontario Curriculum—

Grades 1 to 8: Mathematics by

visiting the Ministry of Education

web site.

All students at Prince Philip have

begun the school year by ex-

ploring patterning in their math

classes. When walking through

our classrooms and hallways,

one can see and hear great

work and thinking related to:

Representing numeric and

geometric patterns (Gr 4)

relationships in numeric pat-

terns and using a table of

values (Gr 5)

Pattern rules, variables, or-

dered pairs, and graphing

(Gr 6)

Representing growing linear

patterns (Gr 7 and Gr 8)

created by Ontario’s Ministry of

Education and grounded in re-

search. The interactive learning

opportunities in CLIPS align with

some of the work we are doing

in classrooms. Check it out!

Mathematics Education’s

ent section that may contain

some information and tools that

you find useful.

At Prince Philip we continue to

encourage all students in Grades

4 through 8 to spend at least 1

hour per week on DreamBox

Learning®'s Math Program

(sessions should be at least 20

minutes in length). This program

promotes flexible thinking in

math and the development of

efficient mental math strategies.

We have been talking to students

about the notion that the frustration

that can sometimes be experienced

when exploring a new model in

math—like those that students will en-

counter with DreamBox—can be off-

set by remembering that their brains

grow and learning happens when mis-

takes are made.

Your child can access DreamBox

Learning from any computer, 24 hours

a day, 7 days a week using this link:

https://play.dreambox.com/

login/42cv/princepn

To access DreamBox on iPad, go to

http://www.dreambox.com/ipad, or

search for "DreamBox Math" in the

App Store. Use this School Code:

42cv/princepn

You can also review your child's aca-

demic progress with a DreamBox Par-

ent Account!

Please follow these steps to create

your free Parent Account:

1. Go to https://

play.dreambox.com/login/42cv/

2. Have your student login to their

profile just as they would at

school.

3. Click Setup Parent Access at the

bottom of the page.

4. Follow instructions to create a new

login and password.

5. Read Terms of Use and Privacy

will be on Tuesday, November 24th. Please remind your children to bring their

From the Library/Learning Commons: Follett Brytewave

Many students have expressed interest in reading on their e-readers. By download-

ing an app called Follett Brytewave K-12 from the App Store, students can access to

thousands of titles commonly found in DSBN libraries. After downloading the app,

students will need to select Prince Philip (Niagara Falls) from the list and enter the

username and password that they use to access the school (networked) computers. If

you have any difficulty downloading the app or if you have any questions or con-

cerns, please contact Mrs. Racey.

Costume Safety

Make sure that costumes are loose

enough to be worn over warm cloth-

ing.

Choose brightly coloured costumes

that will be visible to motorists.

Make-up and face paint are better

than wearing masks, which can re-

strict breathing and or vision.

Look for costumes, beards and wigs

labelled “Flame-Resistant”—nylon or

heavyweight polyester costumes are

best. Avoid costumes with baggy

sleeves or flowing skirts to minimize

the risk of contact with candles and

other fire sources.

Frankenstein Marshmallow Pops

Ingredients:

Green candy melts

Marshmallows

Small pretzel rods

Semisweet chocolate chips

Candy eyeballs

Edible red and black markers

Equipment:

Toothpicks

Lollipop sticks or

Colourful straws

Directions: -Melt the green candy melts in a microwave.

-Push the lollipop sticks into the marshmallows then dip into the melted candy, turning to cover com-

pletely. Stand them upright in a glass filled with uncooked rice and place in the fridge until the chocolate

has cooled.

-Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave. Dip the tops of each of the coated marshmallows in the choco-

late to form the hair, and using a toothpick drag the chocolate down toward the base of the marshmallow

to form spikes of hair. Return to the fridge until the chocolate has hardened.

-Break the ends off the pretzel rods to form the small “bolts” for Frankenstein’s neck. Carefully push one

piece of pretzel into each side of the marshmallow about 1/3 of the way from the bottom.

-Using a toothpick and the remaining melted chocolate, dab two small dots of chocolate onto each marsh-

mallow and press on the candy eyeballs.

-Using the black edible marker, draw on a mouth, and then using the red edible marker, draw on a lacera-

tion on Frankenstein’s forehead. Enjoy the marshmallow pops immediately or store them in an air-tight

container in the fridge until ready to serve. www.justataste.com

The Goodies

Discard homemade candy or baked

goods provided by people you don’t

know.

Throw out any treats that are not

commercially wrapped, those in

torn or loose packages, or any that

have small holes in the wrappers.

Remove choking hazards.

Avoid treats that may contain ingre-

dients like peanuts, milk and egg

that can cause severe reactions in

individuals who have allergies or

sensitivities.

Trick-or-Treating

When trick-or-treating, parents

should accompany their children each

year until the children are old enough

to go by themselves.

Tell your children not to eat any good-

ies until you see them. Make sure that

your child eats dinner before they set

out, so they’ll be less tempted to eat

their goodies along the way.

Children should stay in well-lit areas

and only visit homes that have their

outside lights on.

Children should walk, not run from

house to house and stay on the side-

walk. www.healthycanadians.gc.ca
