Pastor’s Corner Pickled Beets
One of our members gave me a jar of homemade pickled
beets recently. I raced home that day and had a few
right out of the jar. Once I had eaten about half the jar
(in about half a day), I boiled eggs and then placed them
in the heavenly juice.
That week I had one delicious purple egg every day! It
was a little piece of heaven.
I’ve tried to make pickled beets on my own before, but
what I didn’t know was that it takes a special ingredient.
You have to purchase some clove oil and add a few drops
of this potent potion to the beet juice. It makes all the
difference.
But you can’t get clove oil from the grocery store; you
have to go to a pharmacy. Only at a pharmacy can the
pharmacist dole out for you the sacred and precious oil
than enlivens beets and turns boiled eggs into lavender
bulbs of rubbery goodness.
I loved pickled beets and eggs!
Do you know that there are also things that you can only
get from a church community?
You can’t get the water of renewal and birth from a
garden hose. You need a baptismal font. You can’t get
the body and blood of Christ from a drive-thru window.
You need an altar and words of promise.
And then there are all the added blessings: unexpected
prayer, a greeting and a smile, hymn singing, scripture
explanations, and fellowship with strangers.
Many people think you can be a Christian and never go to
church. I suppose that’s true if you lived on a remote
island by yourself.
But every Christian I know actually participates in the life
of a congregation. It is what it means to be part of the
body of Christ, and I believe that it adds flavor and color
to our lives...sort of like beet juice.
In Christ,
Pastor John D. Morris, Senior Pastor

We are Collecting Old Cell Phones and other Small Devices for Recycling
Do you have any old cell phone or other small electronics in a junk drawer at home? Please bring them to a
display in the Fellowship Hall. We collecting small electronics in conjunction with a program at the Columbus Zoo
called Gorillas on the Line. Gorillas on the Line is a small electronics collection drive that helps recycle parts from
old small electronic devices.
Coltan, a rare mineral that helps electronics hold energy, is mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
where Eastern gorillas live. By choosing the recycle old electronics, less mining and deforestation will occur in
gorilla habitat - saving gorillas, okapis, chimpanzees, and a variety of other species that call the DRC home.
We will collect the following small devices through the month of February:
Cell phones
Cell phone accessories
Digital cameras
iPods and MP3 players
GPS handheld units
E-readers

‘Tis Better? -- A Recital of Arias and Songs
John David Nevergall, tenor
Edward Bak, piano
Sunday, February 9 at 4 PM
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Prince of Peace member John Nevergall, along
with pianist Edward Bak, will be presenting a recital of arias and songs that
explore the many facets of relationships -- the beginnings and endings, the joys
of togetherness and the despair of separation, the desire for companionship
and the comfort of solitude. For as long as we have sought to make other people
a part of our lives, we have turned to music to help us process the myriad things
they make us feel.
The program will include works by Schumann, Puccini, Sondheim, Weil, Mozart, and more!

Finding Ways to Pray
Hello, my name is Andrew Pohlman. I am in third grade
and I go to church here. I am also a cub scout. I am
working on a service project for
my church to help me practice
my duty to God in my daily life.
Something that I do every day is
pray. I want to encourage other
kids to pray every day. Please
take a prayer prompt, 5 finger
prayer or talk cards to help you
find ways to pray, too.
Andrew Pohlman, third
grade
Andrew has set up a display in the Fellowship Hall with
ideas to help children pray. Check it out!
Where in the World are the Altar Flower
Chart and Bread Baking Schedule?
The Altar Flower Chart and Bread Baking Schedule are
now located near the Welcome Center on a bulletin
board located by the Men’s restroom.
There are still many spots left to order altar flowers, and
many spots open for bread baking throughout the year.

Dinners for Eight
Fellowship is more than something we do in the
Fellowship Hall! It is sharing life together-in Christ. In a
large church, we can do that best in small groups: a
Bible study, a Sunday School class, choir, book group,
or a committee.
Dinners for Eight offers another opportunity for Prince
of Peace members to experience life together.
Here is how Dinners for
Eight works:
Individuals and couples
should sign-up at the
display in the Fellowship
Hall.
By mid-February, all
participants will be divided into groups of six to eight.
Couples will stay together throughout the year, but
groups will be assigned randomly so that all of us will
have a chance to meet someone new.
Each group will hold three to four dinners within the
next year (March-December). For each dinner, two of
the people in the group will take a turn to host and
cook the entrée. The others in the group will bring side
dishes, desserts, appetizers, and salad. Each group will
determine its own dinner schedule and menu.
If you enjoy cooking, eating, and visiting, this is a great
way for you to connect with others at Prince of Peace.
Sign up in the Fellowship Hall by Sunday, February 9.
We hope you will join us.
Contact Kandi or Ron Snodgrass at
[email protected] if you have any questions
about this fellowship.
Barb Hoyt on Medical Leave
For the Next Month or So
Dear church family,
Beginning January 29 and for most of February,
I will be on a medical leave.
I’ll be joining the bionic group of folks at Prince of
Peace who have had joint replacements. Mine will be
a knee – and I look forward to feeling better soon! In
my absence, Jocelyn Alford will be handling most of
my responsibilities.
If you are scheduled to serve in worship during this
time, you can help Jocelyn greatly by finding your
own substitute if you need one. She can assist you
with suggestions. Once you have found your sub,
please let her know so she can update the
schedule.
For other ministries and activities, please reach out
to Jocelyn if you have questions/concerns. She can
easily get in touch with me if needed.
Jocelyn’s email is [email protected].

Jon Baker
Jon is a life-long Lutheran and member of the ELCA. Prior to joining Prince of Peace in 2015,
Jon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church (Sandusky, OH) and St. John’s Lutheran Church
(Bellevue, OH). Jon, his wife Laura, and their sons, Emerson (4) and Aidan (9 mo.), live in
Powell. He enjoys spending time with his family, cheering on the Buckeyes, visiting the zoo,
working on various home projects, and cycling. A Finance Director at CAS, a division of the
American Chemical Society, Jon is a two-time graduate of The Ohio State University with a
bachelor’s degree in Economics and an MBA through the Fisher College of Business.
Jon has always enjoyed serving the church in a variety of capacities throughout his life. He
largely began his avid involvement with the youth group at St. John’s where he was deeply
passionate about serving the church and local community. Since joining Prince of Peace,
Jon and Laura have enjoyed getting involved beyond worship. Jon is currently finishing his
first term on Council and has previously chaired the Audit Committee; and Laura serves as a
Sunday School teacher and on the Little Shepherds Learning Center board. Emerson enjoys Sunday School and Aidan
looks forward to soon joining the nursery on Sunday mornings.
“Through my first term on council, I found great joy in learning how the council at Prince of Peace effectively supports the
congregation and mission of the church. I also enjoyed developing relationships with other council members and staff
through conversations and decisions that have helped propel the church forward in serving its mission locally and
globally. If chosen to serve you on council for a second term, I would be honored to continue faithfully helping to ensure
the mission and health of our church are fortified.”
“Thank you for allowing me to serve Prince of Peace for the past three years and for your consideration and support in
serving our congregation for a second term.”
Eric Harrell
My name is Eric Harrell and I'm very honored to have the opportunity to run for Church
Council. Our family officially joined Prince of Peace in early 2019 but has been active
here for a number of years. Both of our sons attended Prince of Peace Little Shep-
herds for Preschool and now in middle school are actively involved in Confirmation
Class. My wife Jennifer has been part of the choir for the past two years and traveled
with the choir to Europe last summer. At work I'm General Counsel at a public
retirement system. Outside of work I've coached my kids soccer teams for the past 8
years and was a Cub Scout Den Leader for 5 years. As a family we enjoy a number of
outdoor activities, hiking, biking and traveling whenever possible.

Gary Liebisch
I have been a member of Prince of Peace since 2012, and have been a Lutheran all of my
adult life. I am completing my first term on Council. During my time at POP, I have been
involved with Men’s Bible Study, First English meals, Property Committee (serving now as
chair of that committee), Dinner for 8, Cold Brew Theology, Lector/Greeter/Assisting
Minister, and the spring/fall grounds cleanup days. I am recently retired from Nautel Ltd,
Canada, and now devote more time to my hobby of model railroading and keeping up with
church property issues. I reside in Powell with my wife, Kathy, and we have three
grandchildren.
If re-elected to a 2nd term, I would continue to recruit members to more fully participate in
the fellowship POP has to offer, because we are so much more than just a place for
Sunday worship.
Shelly Longo
Shelly has been a member of Prince of Peace for almost 10 years. She is active in
the Adult Choir and the many music celebrations throughout the church year. She
has led worship in song as a Cantor and recently began learning the role of
lector. Shelly has been happily married to Greg Longo for 26+ years who most
enjoys serving the church through POP’s Café. She is mother to two adult children -
Nathan is entering into his final semester studying Electrical Engineering at Purdue
University and Sophia is entering her second semester studying Vocal
Performance at Ohio State University.
-
11
Andy Prakel
My name is Andy Prakel and I am running for a second church council term. I have
enjoyed my first term and would like to continue serving the church as a council
member. In my three years of being a council member, I have grown spiritually and
expanded my church community from my involvement with church activities.
My family and I have been members since 2001. I am currently the Council President
and previously served as Vice-President. Prior to being elected to council I was also the
church Treasurer. I currently serve as an usher, volunteer with POPs Café, assist with
First English meals and previously was a member of the Local Missions team.
I want to run again to be part of the long-range planning of the church. The makeup of
the church leadership could change within the next five to ten years and I believe my
past experience as a council member and treasurer will help with the planning for the
future direction of Prince of Peace.
Outside of the church, I just concluded six years of being a board member of Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio. I
am also a trustee of The Ohio CPA Foundation and a member of the Ohio Northern University College of Business
Administration Advisory Board. I am a CPA and employed by White Castle as Vice President and Corporate Controller.
Jim Schafer
Jim Schafer and his wife Jen joined Prince of Peace in 1996. Both their sons were
baptized and confirmed in the church and Jim has been an active member ever since.
He has served as an usher and head user for 15 years. He was also a member of
Church Council from 2000 to 2003 and has been a part of the pastoral hiring
committee. He currently is a member of the men’s Bible study group, has helped with
outside cleanup and actively helps his wife with her duties as the head of altar care.
Jim is also an active member of the Dublin community and serves as a teacher and
coach at Scioto High School where he is the advisor of the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes organization.

Sunday School, a Family Ministry
Sunday School is offered Sundays at 9:30 a.m. through May 17. We look
forward to your child attending each week and getting to know their church friends and
families.
The Sunday School teachers are thankful for your time and extra help in the classrooms. Preschool, kindergarten and
first grade need parent helpers each Sunday so that we can offer a safe child adult ratio in these young classrooms.
On Sunday, January 26 at noon, the Sunday School teachers will gather for our annual meeting and luncheon.
Our Curriculum
The preschool through second grade classes use Augsburg’s SPARK Sunday School classroom curriculum. This winter
the students will hear stories about Jesus’ ministry, Jesus’ baptism, the Disciples, His teachings of the
Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer, the Woman at the Well, the Storm, Healing Blind Men, and the Feeding of
the 5000.
The third through fifth grade classes utilize Augsburg’s WHIRL Sunday School lectionary curriculum. The Sunday School
students learn the same Gospel reading as is read during worship! Teachers use a DVD video and provide activities for a
hands-on experience. On January 5, we taught the lesson of Epiphany. On later Sundays, they will learn about the
Baptism of our Lord, a Light to all Nations, and more Epiphany lessons.
Sunday School Offering
Each week in Sunday School, the children are invited to bring an offering. This is a great
opportunity for children to learn about giving and serving others. The Sunday School offering
is collected for the Grain of Rice project. In the Prince of Peace bookstore you can learn more
about the project and also purchase artisan items. The Grain of Rice is run by two sisters
from Indiana. In 2013, they began this education program which empower Kenyans with
education and training initiatives in Jesus’ name. They provide child sponsorship,
literacy-based after-school programs, soccer mentorship program, girls empowerment
programs and artisan training. They have purchased land in Nanyuki, Kenya and plan to build a K-8 school. Learn more
about the Grain of Rice project at https://grainofriceproject.org/
Holy Communion Workshop
Holy Communion Workshop is scheduled for Sunday, April 5, from noon to 3:00 p.m. First Communion will be during
Holy Week on Maundy Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Sign up your students that are in first through fifth grade to learn about Holy Communion. This workshop explains why
the church has communion. More information will be forthcoming in the Peace Signs, including how to sign up. In the
meantime, please contact Pastor John Morris or Sue Miller with any questions.
Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School is being planned for Monday, June 22, Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24, from 9:15 a.m.
to 12:45 p.m. with lunch provided. We are going to ride the Rocky Railway where Jesus Power Pulls us Through.
Save the dates and mark your calendars to be part of this wonderful Bible experience with your family. More information
will follow, including how to sign up your student and to help. Contact Sue Miller for more information at

Prince of Peace has owned and operated a Christian-based part-time
preschool since 2001. Our school is in session from September to May, is
licensed by the State of Ohio Child Care, and follows the program stand-
ards set by the National Association of the Education of Young Children.
We offer a play-based experience for
toddlers 2.5 years through kindergar-
ten. Our kindergarten enrichment clas-
ses meet Tuesdays and Thursdays
9:30 to noon and 12:50 p.m. to
3:20 p.m. Share the Good News!
We invite families to our Pizza Lunch with Dad on Wednesday, February 26 and
Thursday, February 27. The Preschool Board will meet on Tuesday, March 10 at
5:30 p.m. It is time to start considering fall 2020 programing for your preschooler and
kindergartener. Registration information and packets for 2020-2021 are posted on the
website. We are currently processing applications for next year.
For more information about the program go to the church website and open the Little
Shepherds link.
Physical Activity is a Big Part of Our Curriculum
Our curriculum includes activities geared to improve physical development. Children’s physical development is amazing as
they go from crawling to walking to running to
galloping and skipping. We plan activities to help enhance balance skills, while our teachers keep an eye out for safety and
balance skills used on the stairs and our playground equipment. We are so blessed to have an indoor playground
dedicated during the week to indoor play. Each class is scheduled to be on the playground 20 minutes each session per
week. This month we set up an obstacle course that includes scooters, balance beams, stair steps, and a mini trampoline.
The Little Lambs class listened to the story of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and then went on a bear hunt
and obstacle course. Literacy comes alive in action and art!
