YEAR 4 Home Learning – Week 6 (11.05.20) Dear Dickens and Alswitha, Once again, it has been lovely to call you all to see how you are all doing, the different ways that you are keeping up with your hobbies and to hear how you are getting along with your home learning. A big thank you and well done to those of you who were able to play on Times Table Rock Stars at least once throughout the week – we have been keeping track of the brilliant scores that you have been achieving! You all made such fantastic progress whilst we were at school so it is really important that you try to keep up with those skills. Make it your mission to play a few rounds in the garage and studio and to end with a sound check game at least once this week and once next week. You can do it! As ever, if you have any pieces of work or any fantastic creations that you are particularly proud of, do ask an adult to send in a picture to the school office who will then send it along to us. It would be wonderful to see how you are engaging and what you are getting up to. The email address is: [email protected] We hope that you have a peaceful and productive week and look forward to hearing from you all soon. Stay safe, Mr Winter and Mrs Natt

Fabled Kids

Competition

Would you like a story that you’ve written to be published online or read out on a podcast? If so, make sure to read about our competition with

Fabled Kids. We have uploaded a separate document with all the information that you need.

TOPIC & CREATIVE TASKS (For week 6)

Art Finished with your milk or juice bottle? Why not turn it into Elmer – the rainbow elephant. You could make several and place them in your window to surprise passers by on their daily walk. You MUST ask an adult to help you cut the milk bottle. If you don’t have coloured paper, you could always colour in squares of white paper or cut some squares from old magazines and newspapers. Don’t forget to add ears!

RE Last week, you thought about the word ‘sacred’. Rethink about what this means. Then, make a poster with objects that would be inside a Christian church that could be thought of as sacred. Make sure to say why they are so important.

Science We will be learning about habitats and food chains! Look at these websites for a start.Ecosystems = https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbnnb9q/articles/z2pqfcwFood chains = https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbnnb9q/articles/zwbtxsg

PSHE One Fundamental British Value is The Rule of Law. Which ‘laws’/rules do you have in your home? What happens if you break them? Are the laws fair? Why are they important?

Family Project

Be sure to look at the family learning project on the school website.

Task 5 Independent ReadingEnjoy your own reading book for 20 minutes!

You think I'm an ignorant savage

And you've been so many places

I guess it must be so

But still I cannot see

If the savage one is me

How can there be so much that you don't know

You don't know

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest

Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth

Come roll in all the riches all around you

And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers

The heron and the otter are my friends

Writing Tasks (to be completed in order)Task

NumberWhat to do… An example

Task 1 IMAGINE…you’re entrusted to look after a dragon egg until it hatches. The egg

twitches occasionally whilst strange noises seem to be coming from the inside. Based

on the egg’s colour, you look up instructions for how to care for the egg in

Winter’s Big Book of Dragons. As you expected, some of the instructions and

requirements seem quite bizarre.

Write the instructions to care for the egg that will ensure that it hatches.

1.) Firstly, it is important that the egg’s nest is ideal to suit the individual dragon. For this breed, construct a nest using twigs and nettles. If you are to be

You think I'm an ignorant savage

And you've been so many places

I guess it must be so

But still I cannot see

If the savage one is me

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest

YEAR 4 Home Learning – Week 6 (11.05.20)FOCUS 1: Vary nouns and pronouns to

avoid always writing ‘egg’.FOCUS 2: Use conjunctions to extend

sentences (when, if, but, although)

successful, you must also include the first leaf to fall from 3 different oak trees. Afterwards, place the mysterious object in the middle of the nest although this must only be done with your left hand.

Task 2 Caring for the egg was difficult, but you managed it and your dragon hatched

successfully. Congratulations! You spend a month caring for the hatchling and, before long, it has grown to its full size. However, it’s rather unusual and not like any dragon

you have seen before. It possesses the most bizarre skills and abilities too. The

dragon is ferocious and you are starting to realise that it shouldn’t be kept as a pet!

Draw your dragon. Make sure to include labels of its features and any notes about its abilities. You will be

describing it tomorrow.

Task 3 You seek advice from Professor Natt to see what is best for your dragon. You need

to describe the dragon to her.Write a character description of your dragon. Remember, it is ferocious so your word choices should make your

reader feel scared.Focus 1: Appropriate vocabulary (scary

NOT ‘nice’) www.thesaurus.comFocus 2: Similes, personification

Challenge: Metaphors

Glaring at the land below, the beast’s villainous eyes flickered like devilish

flames. Sinister, pearl white teeth slumbered in the creature’s jaws and were as sharp as knives beckoning

their prey towards them. Ominous wings stretched like vast shadows and devoured the terrified landscape.

What feature is highlighted in each colour?

Task 4 Upon Professor Natt’s advice, you decide to set the dragon free. However, you

continue to study it so that you can write a new non-chronological report about it for

Winter’s Big Book of Dragons.Over the next 2 days, write the non-chronological report about your new

breed of dragon. The headings are: Appearance (How to spot your dragon), Unique Abilities and Powers, Habitat and Diet, Caution – Do not do the following.

FOCUS 1: Vary nouns and pronouns to avoid always writing ‘dragon’.

FOCUS 2: Fronted adverbials and conjunctions.

Dragon = the malevolent creature the dangerous beast the destructive reptile

Fronted adverbials =Before you approach the…,Fascinatingly,Because of…,When the dragon is…,Owing to its…,

Task 5 Continue your non-chronological report. Have you included more than

4 examples of each of your focus objectives?

FINISHED? Check your spelling and punctuation, then be proud of what

you have achieved this week!
