    Principal’s Report

This week is School Administrative and Support Staff week and students, parents and teaching

staff acknowledge the hard work done by our School Administration and Support staff (SAS

Staff). This year’s theme is “School Administrative and Support Staff: Vital to Education”.,

Every school day SAS Staff continue to face new challenges; they assist in providing quality

education to our students. Our SAS Staff are a dedicated group of professional workers who

work tirelessly to ensure that schools run smoothly. This week we acknowledge the great work that they do

    and to say thank you!

Last Friday I had the good fortune of attending both secondary and primary assemblies. The secondary

assembly was well attended by parents and the four year 11 students gave us reason to vote each of them in

as School Captain. Voting will be finalised this Wednesday with School Captains for 2013 – 2014 announced. I

also had the privilege of presenting Mrs Judy Campbell with a 30 Year Service Certificate.

In the primary it was great to see Mrs King’s Year 1/2 explain about dinosaurs and different types of shelter

that people have and the environmental impact these dwellings have on the environment. Well done Mrs

King and 1/2. Again it was great to see lots of parents supporting the school.

Finally a reminder that our Early Starters Program is on again this Friday from 9.00 – 12.00. All pre-school age

children welcome and encouraged to attend.

    From the Deputy Principal

This week we start with Year 11 final exams. The exams will be on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Year 12 farewell assembly will be held on Thursday morning starting at 8.50 a.m. and finishing at

approximately 9.30 a.m. after which they will depart for Tamworth. Also on Thursday, those students who

have won a gold award this term will be going to Tamworth with Mr Good. The school disco will be held on

Thursday in the hall from 6.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, Miss Greentree will be taking her HSC PDHPE class to Tamworth for a study session.

I wish all Year 11 the best in their final exams and encourage all HSC students to keep working

hard towards their exams next term. Let’s all have a great week.

Extreme sports at BCS On Friday 30 August Primary students enjoyed an afternoon of extreme sports. Students were permitted to bring along their rip sticks, scooters or skateboards to school and enjoy experimenting with their skills. Students wore protective safety gear and despite a few minor grazes the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all students involved.

    FRUIT ‘N’ VEG MONTH

In order to get the most educational value out of your child/children’s day at school, please

support us by encouraging healthy eating habits. This will not only ensure that students have a

healthy lifestyle, but will also improve their level of concentration and help them to achieve better

results at school. Please make sure that your child/children come to school with healthy options as

opposed to sending sugary teats. Below is another handy tip to help promote healthy lifestyle habits.

    Tip 3:

Fundamental Movement Skills The teaching of Fundamental Movement Skills is an essential component of students’ learning in PDHPE. Access the following website for some ideas on how to teach these important skills. http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/primary/pdhpe/gamessport/fms001.htm

Breakfast is important It is important to encourage breakfast. A good night’s sleep followed by food in the morning helps your child to stay active and concentrate at school. It also means your child is less likely to be too hungry during the morning and it can help with performance at school. Be a role model and let your child see you eat breakfast too. A bowl of cereal with milk and fresh or stewed fruit is a great starter for the whole family

Field trip to understanding On Wednesday, the Year 10 Geography class went on their field trip to significant land and water management sites in the Peel valley. The field trip included tours of the Calala Water Treatment Plant and

Westdale Sewage Treatment Plant. Our thanks to the Tamworth Regional Council staff who gave up their time to explain how these facilities worked. Students were also given a tour of the Peel High School Trade Training Centre and the display of HSC major works produced by the woodwork students. Next week the Year 10 students will be testing the water quality in Barraba. They will check Ph. levels, salinity, turbidity and the biodiversity in the Manilla River.

Great news, great opportunity for VET students at Barraba CS We have been successful in our application for funding of the Trade Training Centre. With careful planning, the Primary Industries facility will also incorporate a Metals teaching area. Earlier in the Year the Vocational Education and Training team wrote the submission which attracted over $900,000 worth of funding. It is a complex venture funded by the Commonwealth Government to help address the skills shortage in Australia which will provide greater opportunities for our students. Last week Mr Thomas and Mr Princic visited Bundarra CS’s Trade Training Centre and Mrs Campbell has visited Moree Secondary College, Farrer and Peel HS – all with very different Trade Training Centre models. On Wednesday the Year 10 Geography class briefly toured the Hospitality kitchens, the metal work and wood working areas for Construction and Metals and Engineering at Peel HS to give them an understanding of the potential for our Trade Training Centre.
