What kind of celebration is it?

Andrzejki (also known as Jędrzejki or

Jędrzejówki) – the evening of fortune

telling on the 29th of November, on the night of St. Andrew’s Eve, the

parton of Scotland, Greece and Russia.

St. Andrew's Night Predictions

The tradition of celebrating Andrzejki goes back to the pagan times. The first known mention of the charms appeared in 1555 and we know that they happened during the Eve of St. Andrew of Galilee. He was a fisherman and later a traveller. Life ended on the cross. The name Andrew comes from the Greek and means the strength and courage. The predictions from the very beginning were intended, for the girls who wanted to know their future husbands.

The standard fortune telling is pouring the wox. The unmarried girl has to find the old key, belonging to her grandmother or it was even better to use the key from the door of the church. The girl could also pre-pay a key during the common mass. The shape of the wax that was poured onto the water revealed the characteristics of her future husband’s personality. If a girl saw the shape of a mountain it ment that the husband will be violent, but the shape of a dog or a cat ment that he will be a good friend.

In our school each year there is a special event with the party.

It is usually oragnised by the school’s community. It is the evening full of unforgettable experiences and fortune telling. The students dress up, dance, sing and have fun playing games and doing funny tricks.

Presently people do not take seriously the fortune-telling during St. Andrew Day but this day is still celebrated because it is lots of fun especially for young people on St. Andrew's Night
