ECOHYDROLOGY Master

Ecohydrology (EH) is a transdisiplinary and integrative sustainability problem solving science that seeks to understand the ecological processes controlled by the hydrological cycle from a molecular to a basin scale. The theoretical and empirical background to the principles of Ecohydrology were developed by professor Maciej Zalewski with a team from the Department of Applied Ecology of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection University of Lodz, the European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology of the Polish Academy of Science in Lodz (ERCE) and the international collaborators in the framework of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme.

Hydrological cycle at a catchment scale, is considered in ecohydrology as a framework for the regulation of processes to enhance of Water, Biodiveristy, ecosystem Services (e.g. food, fuel), ecosystem Resilience and Cultural heritage (WBRSC) (Zalewski 2014).

Such a multidimentional goal for catchment management is the fundamental condition for the transition from exploitative to sustainable resource use, incorporating innovative tools as “Nature Based Solutions” and a systemic approach compatible with the “Circular and Bio-Economy”.

ECOHYDROLOGY Master

ULO Master Course in Ecohydrology aims to create highly specialized professionals in the area of Ecohydrology (EH). The master links ecology and hydrology and shows how to use it as a management tool for protection and management of the natural environment, in context of modern methods and ecological biotechnologies, and with consideration of current environmental policy. Programme is also available within ERASMUS MUNDUS Master of Science in Ecohydrology (ECOHYD, www.ecohydmaster.org)

ECOHYDROLOGY Master – Graduate Profile

• describes the link between ecology and hydrology and applies it as a management tool for protection and sustainable use of the natural environment, in context of modern methods and ecohydrological biotechnologies, and with consideration of current environmental policy, • determines the ecological processes that support the resilience of aquatic ecosystems and plans how to harmonize them with existing engineering infrastructures at the river basin scale, to achieve sustainable aquatic ecosystems use and to reverse the processes of human caused degradation, • uses an holistic perspective of freshwater ecosystems functioning, under natural and anthropogenic pressures, and by this regulates ecological processes based on understanding of the "water - biota interactions", from a molecular (e.g., microbial loop) to an ecosystem (biomanipulation), and then to a landscape scales (reforestation, creation of land/water ecotonal buffer zones, artificial wetlands, floodplain management),

• estimates the social and economic values of aquatic ecosystems, and develops the research and applications required to support and implement conservation and adaptation measures for the sustainable management of aquatic environments, • applies advanced tools in the planning, conception and design phases of ecohydrological projects, • uses communication and research skills for integrated team work, decision supporting systems for community policy, and for creation the interface between researchers, stakeholders and decision makers.

ECOHYDROLOGY Master – Application Info

Tuition fee: The charge of 8800 PLN/year applies for Polish and the EU/EFTA citizens. 3000 EUR/year for students from outside the EU/EFTA, exclusive of an

additional 120 EUR charge that covers registration fee (for students of Polish origin the tuition is reduced by 50%).

Deadline for application - 15 July each year Application Requirements An applicant who has successfully accomplished a first degree of higher education equivalent to a B.Sc. degree in one of the following subjects: biology, ecology, geosciences, environmental protection, limnology, hydrology, aquatic engineering or any similar subject. Admission procedure requires the legalized Bachelor’s Degree Diploma (or other document confirming bachelor’s degree studies graduation) with the transcript of records and the English Language Certificate.
