Also, we are always looking for members to help with Club events, especially with the show. No experience necessary, just a willingness to help out. Let me know if you can help with setup or the teardown of the show. There are a couple of areas during the show that need a second hand or two. We want everyone to participate in their car club. Vol 34 No 9

September 2017

I always open with a weather comment, simply be-cause it affects how much we can enjoy our cars so I’m glad the temps are starting to moderate a bit. The 33rd annual British Car day is not far away and we’ve been planning for a great show. Last year’s re-

ception was smashing and the club is looking forward to another one. Millie, Irene and Lynn have been working hard on it, there will be great food and several silent auction baskets for folks to bid on. These baskets are lovely and Lynn puts a lot of thought and effort into them. Diane has been working hard on all aspects of the show and it will be a lot of fun.

You may have noticed on the registration form that we’ve decided to slim down the number of car show classes. There are some classes that have had few or no en-tries so the intent is to streamline the show and save funds those classes have been merged. Trophies get more expensive and the Club seems to end up with too many at the end of the shows. As always, we can adjust classes if the number of pre-registered cars justify it.

The drive-in movie night was a great hit and a lot of fun. Michael outdid himself, as usual. The Club had two tables of food and BBQ before we sat down to watch a cheesy car movie involving kids in an MGTC outfoxing the stereotypical British bad guys. The movie was held at Ryan Tosh’s Remington Elliot facility. We can’t thank him enough, we had plenty of room, in a grand garage surrounded by classic cars, and had a great time in air conditioned comfort.

The club has a number of great events that are coming up for its members. Check the excellent Club website (thanks Dave!) for a listing of upcoming events.

Also, we are always looking for members to help with Club events, especially with the show. No experience necessary, just a willingness to help out. Let me know if you can help with setup or the teardown of the show. There are a couple of areas during the show that need a second hand or two. We want everyone to participate in their car club. We’re also looking for give-aways for the registration bags, if you know any organization that would like to donate please let us know.

‘Til next time

Being from Maine, this is the time of year when summer has already disappeared and folks are looking forward to enjoying the glorious colors of the fall season. Tour-ists are everywhere as are car shows! Unlike here

where it continues to stay hot for several more weeks (or months), New England has day-time temps of about 70+ and what we would consider just plain cold nights, already in the 50s. 70 degrees makes for perfect top-down driving, strolling show grounds in the sun-shine, kicking tires and telling tales.

I reminisce about this as I think about our upcoming 33rd Annual British Car Day on Octo-ber 28th! As one of the oldest (if not the oldest) car club in the Charleston area, estab-lished in 1983, we can take great pride in the fact that we have enjoyed 32 British Car Days to date. To that end, I want to give a huge thank you shout out to all of our mem-bers who through the years have given of their time, talents and generosity to make our event successful and fun.

All members have benefitted from these efforts, not only by showing off great cars and winning some of the classiest trophies around year after year, but also by enjoying the camaraderie and sharing in new friendships that have been nurtured during this time. Our Club and our BCD have attracted Brit Car folks from all parts of the US. Whether we’re transplants or we simply like to travel around participating in car shows, meeting new people and experiencing what other folks enjoy, we’re all the same - continuously forging new friendships, enjoying our LB Beauties, enjoying the wind in our hair and the sunshine on our faces! Life is Good!

I published a list in the August Windscreen outlining areas where help is needed at this year’s BCD and asking for you to generously help fill these slots. Since Dave Rosato has so kindly undertaken coordinating these tasks in my absence, he has updated the list, and you will find it published in this issue, and a sign-up sheet will be available at the Septem-ber meeting. Please give serious thought as to what service you can offer for BCD and either email Dave or plan to attend the September 9th meeting so you can sign on at that time.

In addition to thanking Dave for taking on the task of organizing this year’s BCD, I want to thank everyone who has picked up the various pieces and run with them. Because of this typical can-do attitude and desire for the Club to be successful, everything is falling into place (I never had a doubt), and we can all look forward to another fantastic BCD. Right now the Farmer’s Almanac predicts October 28th to be sunny and a bit cooler than normal at 78. Folks, this is what I call perfect so go on-line to register!

In closing, I want to thank all of you who have so generously given of your time whether it was preparing meals or helping with chores at our house, shared your many prayers, caring get well wishes or offers for assistance to both Jack and me via your texts, emails, phone calls and cards, Jack and I want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. You are all very near and dear to us. Also, thank you all who gave a shout-out when Jack rang the bell at the end of his radiation treatments! That was such a touching moment to share with all of you! Thank You!!!

Since Wray and Susanne are on a European adventure, you’ll be stuck with me at the Sep-tember meeting, but I think we can find plenty of car related items to talk about!

See you at the Marina Variety Restaurant on the 9th!

The Drive-In Movie By Mike West

The Drive-In movie at Remingtons over off Clements ferry Road on 19th August was well-attended by about thirty BCCC members. Rain threatened, so there were not a lot of canvas hoods in the parking lot. Even I, the most daring of the T-Types in bad weather, drove a German car in case of rain. IT DIDNT RAIN!!. The members brought great groceries consisting of BBQ and salad, baked beans, muchas huevos, and lots of delicious desserts. Tom Horton, DR of note, still a DR, pronounced that there were no calories in the desserts, so there was precious lit-tle left over!! DR Horton is a real DR and not just a Chiropractor like Alan Harper on Two and a Half men, and he always speaks the truth!!

The cheesy car movie met all the criteria: 1962 British movie called "Diamonds on Wheels" with a convoluted British plot involving an MGTC and a myriad of other British cars in a chase for an elusive cache of diamonds allegedly hidden in the seat of a wrecked MGTC. Yes, it was cheesy, and no, you shouldn't pay to see this movie (again)!! Howsumever, the chow was great!! The flick was about a rally in-volving many British cars of the early 1960s.

In 1981, before the BCCC was born, there was the Sports Car Club of America, SCCA in Charleston. President was a TR2 driver named Cavanaugh. They (we) ran a Cannonball Rallye from K-Mart on Hwy 17 S to three points in SC whereupon the driver picked up a token verifying that the car had been there. The rule was that you could drive to any of the three places at any speed, in any order, and try to get back to homeplate first or at least by the time you left. The course was about two hundred miles. The points were Alvin, SC, Due West, SC, and some oth-er place that is long forgotten called Springfield SC!! On return, we joined at a pub at the corner of Hwy 7 and Orange Grove Road and congratulated each other on making the entire two hundred miles!! I drove the same MGTD that I have owned for forty years!! I didn't win and it didn't matter!!

There were trophies and pretty girls handing them out and lots of beer-swigging drivers....all of which would be off-limits by today's standards. We wuz young-sters; thirty five and less, and there weren't any gray-hairs to cause us to settle down. Ms Cavanaugh even had the foresight to leak the Cannonball Rallye route to the Highway Patrol. She told them we would be going down toward Savan-nah!!! Alvin is near Georgetown, Springfield is north of Orangeburg, and Due West is due west of something!!. One guy got a ticket for driving to Augusta...(how did that happen), too fast!! Volvo driver, I think.

The cheesy movie at the Remington Drive-In reminded BCC members of the way it was so many years ago and we really appreciated the Lemkes and Michael Raines for arranging it. A special thanks to Remington for the venue!!

Good time for gray hairs!!

Octobers Monthly Meeting Guest Speaker By Erik Calonius

October 14th will bring a most exciting speaker to the BCCC breakfast—an adven-turer who has climbed Mt. Blanc and the Matterhorn, Mt. McKinley and Shishapangma (the highest mountain in Tibet), and Mount Everest itself. He is a member of the Royal Geographic Society and has traveled the world--from the Arctic to the Sahara, and down the Amazon.

On top of that, he comes from a British family enraptured with the most exciting of British cars. His father raced supercharged “Blower Bentleys,” competing in one of the final races at Surrey’s famed Brooklands racetrack. He owned many motorcycles as well. Picking up his new Brough Superior at the factory one day in the 1930s, he met another customer collecting his motor bike—T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia).

Harry Farthing (for that is our guest’s name) acquired his father’s love of motor-cycles and has owned about fifty of them, journeying across Europe, North Afri-ca, India, Nepal and the United States. (His sister is also an avid driver, scram-bling up English hills in Caterham Seven sportscars and circling tracks in Force single-seaters—the British composite race car.

Beyond all that, we will gather to celebrate the recent publication of Harry’s first novel, Summit, a page-turning tale about the attempts of the Nazi SS to plant the swastika at the top of Mount Everest in 1938. “A gripper,” reports Sir Robert Swan, the first person to walk both the South and North Poles. “It takes you up to the majesty of Mt. Everest and into the single minded madness of climbers. Fantastic.”

In addition to speaking, Harry will bring books to sell, and sign. A great gift for yourself, or that special someone. Let’s give Harry a warm welcome!

Last month I received an email from Gordon King with a web link to a British mov-ie he wanted to share with the rest of the club. The hour long movie is “Magnificent Machines - The Golden Age of the British Sports Car”. If you have-n’t seen it already, there is a link on the front page of our website. This inspired me to find some other British videos that others would like. Youtube was full of them. I added a page to our website with links to many of them. Here is the link. http://www.britishcarclubcharleston.com/BritishVideos.php There is a link to it under the top Gallery menu.

If there is anything you would like see added to our website, please let me know.

Combine the strawberries, sugar, and 1/4 cup of water in a large saucepan and cook un-covered over medium-low heat for 5 minutes. Add 2 cups of the raspberries and all the blueberries and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches a simmer, and sim-mer for a minute. Off the heat, stir in the remaining raspberries and the framboise.

Slice the bread in 1/2-inch-thick slices and remove the crusts. In the bottom of a 7-1/2 inch round by 3-inch high soufflé or baking dish, ladle about 1/2 cup of the cooked berry mixture. Arrange slices of bread in a pattern (this will become the top when it’s unmold-ed) and then add more berry mixture to saturate. Continue adding bread, cutting it to fit the mold, and berries. Finish with bread and cooked berries, using all of the fruit and syrup.

Place a sheet of plastic wrap loosely over the pudding. Find a plate approximately the same diameter as the inside of the mold and place it on top. Weight the mold with a heavy can and refrigerate. Remove the weight after 6 to 8 hours. Cover the pudding with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

Just before serving, run a knife around the outside of the pudding and unmold it upside down onto a serving plate. Serve in wedges with rum whipped cream.

1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced

1-1/2 cups sugar

3 half-pints fresh raspberries, divided

2 half-pints fresh blueberries

2 tablespoons framboise (raspberry brandy)

1 loaf brioche or egg bread (1 to 1-1/2 pounds)

Summer Pudding with Rum Whipped Cream

Lynn Rosato

Summer Pudding is an old-fashioned English dessert. It's made by layering cooked ber-ries and leftover bread in a mold, refrigerating it overnight, and then unmolding it onto a serving plate. It’s the perfect make-ahead dessert for your party this weekend. Enjoy these last weeks of summer!

Rum Whipped Cream (Serves 8)

1 cup (1/2 pint) cold heavy cream

3 tablespoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 tablespoon dark rum

Whip the cream in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. When it starts to thicken, add the sugar, vanilla, and rum. Continue to whip until it forms stiff peaks. Serve cold.
