Greg PetrowichExecutive Director, WSIU Public Broadcasting

As you can read in the adjacent article, WSIU is partnering with the Illinois Humanities Council (IHC) on a new radio series called Southern Illinois Wonders. Working with the IHC to develop programming is a natural fit for WSIU, and we certainly hope this fills a small void in original local content.

What’s new in this series will be the deeper exploration into people and places in southern Illinois. What’s not new will be the role WSIU plays in the exploration of the humanities.

For years, programming from PBS and NPR has helped guide a conversation about what it means to be human and to experience all the wonders of our world. It only takes a simple walk down Sesame Street to see how the world has changed since the modern era of public broadcasting began in 1967.

In fact, WSIU has been the “humanities station” for the region since we signed on the air. In the world of electronic media, where else can one turn to explore the visual and performing arts, language, literature, philosophy, and religion? Public broadcasting does not merely document these subjects –we discuss, speculate, and critique. We broaden the focus, beyond our own language or religion, to those of places we will never go and to people we will never meet. Yet the influence these people and places have on our lives and our own experiences increases in relevance every day.

Millions have shared a common viewing experience through PBS, but like the snowflakes that have dominated our winter scape this year, no two experiences are exactly alike. Nobody can or should tell us what to think, but the opportunity for a common understanding about what it is to be human is a cornerstone of public broadcasting.

Your support over the years has been vital in providing the opportunity for all to experience and better understand humanity, though the wonder of public television. As always, we thank you for watching, listening, and supporting.

WSIU Radio and the Illinois Humanities Council have partnered to produce Southern Illinois Wonders, a new series of five-minute humanities-themed segments focusing on the history, art, culture, and other wonders of the southern Illinois region.

“We’re very excited to be working again with our valued partner WSIU Radio in this new series,” said IHC Executive Director Angel Ysaguirre. “Southern Illinois Wonders will create opportunities for audiences to learn about the region’s long history and distinctive culture, from those who study, celebrate, and live it.”

Topics will vary widely, from the agricultural history of Union and Jackson counties to contemporary poetry by Gary DeNeal, from the history of steamboat building with historian Bob Swenson to the growth of the African American community with Rev. Dr. Joseph Brown of SIU Carbondale’s Africana Studies.

Programs will be presented as essays or commentaries, while others will be developed in more creative or experimental formats. In addition to the on-air broadcasts, the series will be available in streaming audio and podcast formats through the WSIU and IHC websites at wsiu.org and prairie.org.

SundayS 8pm | march 30-may 11Jeremy Piven (Entourage) returns for a sumptuous new season as Harry Gordon Selfridge, the American capitalist buccaneer who brought seductive shopping to early twentieth-century London.

Season 2 opens in the spring of 1914 with the store’s gala fifth anniversary. Many employees have moved up thepromotion ladder, some have moved on, and Rose has moved out – back to America from pique with Harry over his blatant infidelities. She unexpectedly returns to London, but as a changed woman. Meanwhile the loose ends of love affairs from last season get tied up as men are called to serve in a war that will change their lives forever. As in every other sphere of society, World War I puts everyone at Selfridges to the severest test yet.Photo: ©ITV for Masterpiece

Season three opens in 1959, on the eve of the Swinging Sixties. SUNDAYS 9PM | APRIL 20-MAY 4The Bletchley Circle returns for another season, following four ordinary women with the extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover at Bletchley Park, site of the United Kingdom’s main decryption establishment. The women use their code-breaking skills to solve crimes in post-war London.

BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS, PARTS 1 & 2 APRIL 20 • 9-11pm

Alice Merren (Hattie Morahan, at left) is in prison awaiting trial for the murder of her former Bletchley Park colleague. Jean (Julie Graham), believing Alice is covering for someone, begins to reunite the circle to help establish the innocence of one of their own. The investigation leads to a young woman who seems to have had a relationship with the deceased and in whose home they find evidence of a military cover-up of a chemical spill. Can the women exonerate Alice?

UNCUSTOMED GOODS, PARTS 1 & 2 APRIL 27 & MAY 4 • 9-10pm

Millie’s (Rachael Stirling, at left) import/export sideline leads to her abduction by a crime ring involved in trading perfume, cigarettes, stockings – and people. WSIU-TV senior producer and Illinois Lawmakers host and correspondent Jak Tichenor will anchor live coverage of Illinois Governor Pat Quinn’s annual Budget Address to the Illinois General Assembly. WSIU-TV and WSIU Radio will broadcast the address live, with a repeat at 10pm on WSIU-TV.

“Governor Quinn is facing some stark choices putting together next year’s budget,” says Tichenor. “The state’s temporary income tax increase is scheduled to expire next January midway through the state’s fiscal year, which begins July 1. If the tax hike expires on schedule, the legislature’s revenue forecasting arm says the state will lose nearly $1.6-billion dollars.”

Quinn, a Chicago Democrat, has not yet signaled whether he will request a tax increase extension, but has asked lawmakers for

extra time to prepare a spending plan, which he says will address the state’s budget priorities for the next five years.

“Either he makes deep cuts to state programs like education, health and human services, and public safety,” says Tichenor, “or he calls for extending the tax increase heading into the November General election contest, a politically risky move no matter who ends up winning the March Republican primary. He might even call for new ways to balance the budget like expanding the state’s casino gaming industry.”

Illinois Lawmakers’ live coverage will feature analysis from veteran Statehouse reporters Rich Miller of Capitolfax.com and Amanda Vinicky of Illinois Public Radio, as well as reaction from House and Senate legislative leaders.

If you live in the northern region of WSIU/WUSI-TV’s service area or are traveling to Springfield, Ill. in late March, join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Wednesday, March 26 at 6pm at the Illinois State Library for a free screening of the new WSIU-TV documentary, P.S. Illinois: The Paul Simon Story, A Life of Uncommon Courage.

Written and produced by senior producer Jak Tichenor, the 90-minute documentary recounts the life of the late corruption fighting newspaper publisher and former Lieutenant Governor, U.S Congressman, and U.S. Senator Paul Simon, who passed away in 2003. Simon also taught political science, history, and journalism at SIU Carbondale and founded the Simon Institute. Friends and family, and those who worked with Simon closely in government, also share their personal recollections.

Our Students are 100 Days Smarter!

Students, teachers, parents, grandparents, and blood donors convened at Our Lady of Mt Carmel School (OLMC) in Herrin for Catholic Schools

Week on January 26-31. WSIU was there with Super WHY and Kindle Fire tablets to help implement and showcase the new Mobile Learning Lab and PEG + CAT 100 Days of School

resources in the preschool. Ashley Tretter of Marion, lead preschool teacher, and her 36 students were excited to get educational tools for their classroom.

While on location, PBS KIDS character Super WHY congratulated blood donors and Red Cross Bloodmobile workers in the gym. Over 250 people attended the event, which also included a book fair and Grandparents Day activities.

A big thank you goes to OLMC principal Mrs. Stacy Faye Myatt, along with Sister Marciana Heimann, ASC, Herrin High School student and Youth Group member Nick Techenbrock, and

Teri Isaacs for assisting with PBS KIDS activities with families.

North Side Primary Center in Herrin and the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, along with principal Cassie Burgess, also participated in WSIU’s 100 Days of School. About 300 families were introduced to PEG + CAT through video and computer games in the school’s media lab. SIU students Zach Barrett, Joshua Jackson, Kristopher Lewis, and T. J. Price captured video and photos with families. Kindergarten teachers Stephanie Allen and Melodi Coleman shared how they are using Mobile Learning tools in the classroom, and teachers and volunteers helped kids construct PEG + CAT flipbooks and stick puppets to strengthen their skills in counting and identifying shapes. See photos below from our PEG + CAT events!

When Cassius Clay became Muhammad Ali, he found himself in the crosshairs of conflicts concerning civil rights, religion, and wartime dissent. The Trials of Muhammad Ali zeroes in on the years 1967 to 1970, when Ali lived in exile within the U.S., stripped of his heavyweight belt and banned from boxing for refusing U.S. military service.

In recognition of Earth Day, American Masters presents A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet, the first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement – spanning 50 years of grassroots and global activism, from conservation to climate change.

Inspired by the book of the same name by Philip Shabecoff, and directed and written by Academy Award-nominated director

Mark Kitchell, the film also offers a deeper view of environmentalism as civilizational change and the importance of bringing our industrial society into sustainable balance with nature. Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Ashley Judd, Van Jones, and Isabel Allende narrate.

Look for more green programming airing throughout the month of April. See listings on pages 22-27 for details.
