Tented Eco Camp 3 or 5 Night Hands on Conservation ExperienceGondwana’s Eco Camp offers guests a tangible and authentic wildlife conservation experience, making it a holiday with a difference! The itinerary sees guests participating in wildlife and veld management, learning important bush skills and interpretation, all while enjoying a Big 5 safari experience. This new offering has filled a gap in the safari market letting guests get a behind-the-scenes understanding of the conservation work that happens on a game reserve while still enjoying a relaxing and enriching holiday in nature.

Beyond the wildlife experiences, the tented camp itself is anything but average – the tents are modern, eco-friendly and very comfortable. Each of the five tents, set on elevated decks overlooking a grass-covered riverbed, provides single or double accommodation, with its own en-suite bathroom facility and covered deck. A wooden walkway over the riverbed links the accommodation to a main tent, which houses the lounge, dining spaces and kitchen area as well as a nearby relaxation area with a pool and hammocks. The entire camp runs on solar power and sources its water from a nearby perennial spring.

Flora & Fauna Activities Take a Walk on the Wild Side . . .Our expert field guides reveal Africa’s wildlife to Gondwana’s guests in a Cape Fynbos environment; a truly unique safari experience! Exhilarating encounters on game drive with endangered species like the Cape Mountain Zebra, and Rhinoceros will provide lasting memories. Over 15 species of antelope can be found on the reserve including kudu, eland, bontebok, waterbuck, sable, grey reebok and many more. The free roaming Big 5 species also keep things interesting with many visits to the lodge from the Cape buffalo, elephants and lions! Gondwana is home to seventeen carnivore species ranging from the small grey mongoose and small-spotted genet to medium-sized species such as the caracal and bat-eared fox, to the very large and powerful lion.

Guests can also enjoy informative guided Fynbos walks with our resident Fynbos experts and discover endemic plant, animal and birdlife that is unique to this area, such as the Mossel bay Pincushion protea, Greysbok, Black Harrier and Orange Breasted Sunbird. Fynbos is a critically endangered biome and guests will assist in its conservation by identifying, recording, and monitoring the species they find on the Reserve during this interactive experience which is offered daily between morning and evening game drives.

Guests at Gondwana are offered an assortment of inclusive activities, from game drives to walking safaris, fishing and mountain biking in a fenced 1000-hectare protected area. The Gondwana Conservation FoundationThe Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF) has been established as a non-profit organization to contribute to the conservation of South Africa’s threatened and endangered wildlife and vegetation relevant to the Southern Cape through active management, training and skills development of the local people. The Southern Cape of South Africa is home to one of the most critically endangered vegetation types on earth (Fynbos) and has a high unemployment rate within the region. The foundation currently has three active projects:

Conservation Education A vital part of our conservation efforts includes the education of all our neighboring communities and regular hosting of community schools (grade 6 & 7s) contributes to awareness and understanding of the value conservation brings to all of us as well as exposes them to conservation as a possible career.

Rainbow Rhino InitiativeThe GCF sponsors various anti-poaching training courses annually benefitting both the public and private sector and is establishing a breeding population of rhino on Gondwana to distribute to protected areas.

Conservation of Critically Endangered Fynbos Our location in the Cape Floristic Kingdom with its critically endangered Fynbos plant species requires very specific data collection and monitoring as well as land management with ongoing research and experimentation to determine optimal game densities and regenerative veld burning programs. All of which are critical in sustaining its biodiversity.
