CULLY CLASSIQUE BECOMES LAVAUX CLASSIC

After 12 years of success, Cully Classique is now expanding to include the entire Lavaux Region and is changing its name to Lavaux Classic!

There are two key objectives behind this development. On the one hand, to strengthen the values and spirit forged by the festival over the last 12 years. On the other, there is a new vision: to represent the region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the same features that have made the event a success since 2004. Lavaux Classic comprises a unique formula, which combines high artistic standards, proximity to the events and the discovery of a truly exceptional landscape.

Cully - which remains the centre of the event – will offer over a hundred events over the course of 10 days: paying concerts in various concert halls across the region focusing on a pre-decided theme, free lakeside concerts of all styles, meetings and children’s events.

With its dynamic and unique nature, Lavaux Classique will become a festival of the entire region. It enjoys strong support owed to its deep roots in local soil, cross-regional fame and a strong international element.

Festival'IN E The Festival’IN comprises the paying activities of the event: almost 25 classical concerts, events based on the theme and activities involving discovering Lavaux. International artists and young musicians alike gather at Lavaux Classic for exceptional musical moments. The Festival’IN programme is announced on 2nd March 2016.

Festival'OFF E The Festival’OFF includes the event’s free activities: nearly 30 concerts of all styles by the lake in Cully, meeting the musicians and exciting music-based activities. The Festival’OFF program will be announced on 1st June 2016.

NEW BRANDING

After 12 years of existence and growing success, Cully Classique begins a new chapter under the name Lavaux Classic. A new logo has been created to reflect the values and particularities of the festival from its 13th edition onwards.

A typography full of character was chosen: Retiro Pro. It embodies the nobility of classical music while having original features. With unique qualities on certain letters, this font marks the rugged terrain of vineyards plunging into Lake Geneva and the winding alleys meandering between the clusters and leaves, sometimes green, yellow or red.

A fresh, bright green was chosen as the identity colour of Lavaux Classic: it illustrates the fig leaf, the reflections of the lake some days and especially the dynamism of the event.

The Association des Amis also takes on a new appearance and a new colour: purple.

The Lavaux Classic logo features a shape that is integral to the identity of the festival. This is a 14-sided polygon. It expresses the many facets of this festival, rich in projects, ideas and different activities. This form also acts as a highlight for the image to give it more strength and more presence, like the festival, which despite its small size, reaches far beyond the region and is internationally esteemed.

It is this form that you will find on the poster for the 2016 edition and which functions as a spotlight on the breathtaking views of Lavaux.

The use of photography also marks a change in communication of the festival, which is moving away from a purely graphic identity. This will put into perspective the vision and the unique atmosphere of Lavaux. 2016 will feature pictures from Cully-based photographer Michel Bertholet.

LAVAUX AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

A UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007, Lavaux is a wine region, unique for its landscape, character and history. Located at the edge of Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Vevey (Switzerland), the region is known for its ter-raced vineyards literally plunging into the lake and is dotted with small villages suspended be-tween sky and water.

As well as its spectacular beauty, Lavaux is rich in traditions and experience, every year attracting tourists from all around the globe. A landscape formed by man over more than a thousand years, Lavaux is striking in its natural beauty, revealing hidden treasures. Over the centuries, Lavaux became known for its hospi-tality, typical regional cuisine and world-famous wines with eight designated sources.

Lavaux Classic mimics these countless cultural riches, bridging the gap between musical crea-tion and living heritage.

13TH EDITION

"HOrs LiMites" (BeyONd LiMits) – 24tH JuNe – 3rd JuLy

A platform for creating and sharing, the festival attracts more than 7,000 spectators each year, and welcomes internationally renowned artists and talented young musicians. Its trademark is a proximity at all times, with intimate venues, housing artists amongst locals and offering one of a kind encounters between the audience and the musicians. After 12 years of existence, Cully Classique changes its name and is now extending its borders to the entire Lavaux region. Under the new name of Lavaux Classic, the 13th edition of the festival takes place from 24 June to 3 July 2016 and carries the theme “Hors limites” (Beyond limits).

22 paying concerts E With the majority of concerts and activities organized in Cully, the town remains the heart of Lavaux Classic. Vevey and the/la Salle del Castillo now host the concerts of the Evénements series. In Cully, The Temple hosts three different series and the/la Steinway Lounge – Hug Musique hosts the Découvertes concerts. Among the guests of the edition 2016 are Boris Berezovsky, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, le Quatuor Borodine, Tedi Papavrami and La Venexiana. Placed under the theme “Beyond limits”, the 13th edition of the festival is dedicated to the masterpieces, which, from the Baroque era to the present, are the result of overcoming situations of deprivation or restriction.

Autour des concerts E Determined to break down barriers of classical music, the festival organizes many activities, free or paying, which will allow the public to discover this year’s theme, to listen to and even meet the musicians. Organized in the framework of Festival'IN, Conversations offer moments of exchange around the theme of the edition. As for the ‘OFF, the P’tits déj avec and workshops Autour d’une œuvre permit the public to meet some of the artists from the Festival'IN or to discover in a musical work in great depth.

Discovering Lavaux E To highlight the unique area that hosts the festival, Lavaux Classic offers a range of activities that combine classical music and discovering Lavaux. These activities include: walks in the vineyards of Lavaux punctuated by surprise musical stops and tasting local products, public meetings public meetings with local products carte blanche to a musician and a winemaker and even a concert organized in a heritage site of Lavaux.

Free concerts at L’Embarcadère E During the festival, the stunning lakeside in Cully is now called L’Embarcadère. Its stage offers 30 free concerts of all styles. Located at the heart of the festival, it also provides a place to eat and drink.

Find all the details about the series, activities outside the concerts and the Lavaux discovery activities on pages 8 to 11.

THEME

“HOrs LiMites” (BeyONd LiMits)

In 2016, the development isn’t just geographic (from Cully to Lavaux), it is also at the heart of the theme for the 13th edition of Lavaux Classic.

This year, the festival is dedicated to the master-pieces, which, from the baroque period to today have been created through overcoming depri-vation or restriction. These necessarily changing experiences are the foundation for compositions with a rare density and depth that transcend the creator's situation: they are works “beyond limits”.

This topic being as vast as it is exciting, two ar-eas have been prioritized: political and social constraints, as well as those relating to a state of physical or mental illness. This 13th edition will therefore present pieces by Schütz facing the ravages of the Thirty Years’ War, the latest mas-terpieces by Schubert, Beethoven hampered by deafness, Mélodies by Duparc interrupted by a nervous disease that condemned him to silence, Etudes by Debussy written at the beginning of World War I when he was a very physically afflict-ed composer, the famous Quatuor pour la fin du Temps by Messiaen composed in a concentration camp and works marked by communist totalitari-anism (Chostakovitch, Ligeti, Kurtág).

All of these works share a transcendental dimen-sion, a unique beauty, an essential character. For, backed into a corner, man overflows with crea-tivity as if, pushed and constrained by an external force, it grows in intensity and emerges even more beautiful than before. It is to this transcendence that Lavaux Classic is dedicating its 13th edition.

Finally, in order to reach beyond the music, Lavaux Classic invites senior, world class musicians to come and express the theme “beyond limits” in their own way. Thinkers, writers, journalists, film-makers, these strong personalities will deliver their wealth of knowledge in a series of four Conversa-tions with Charles Sigel (see page 9).

I hope you enjoy exploring our 2016 programme.

SELECTION OF BIOGRAPHIES

Pierre-LaureNt aiMard, PiaNO (FraNCe)

Widely acclaimed as a key figure in the music of our time and as a uniquely significant interpret-er of piano repertoire from every musical period, Pierre-Laurent Aimard enjoys an internationally celebrated career.

Born in Lyon in 1957, Pierre-Laurent Aimard studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Yvonne Loriod and in London with Maria Curcio. Ear-ly career landmarks included winning the 1973 Messiaen Competition at the age of 16 and be-ing appointed three years later by Pierre Boulez as Ensemble intercontemporain's first solo pianist. Pierre-Laurent Aimard has had close collabo-rations with many leading composers includ-ing György Kurtág, Stockhausen, Elliott Carter, Pierre Boulez, and George Benjamin, and had a long association with György Ligeti, recording his complete works for piano. Most recently he per-formed the world premiere of Harrison Birtwistle’s Responses; Sweet disorder and the carefully care-

less, as well as Carter’s last piece Epigrams.

He regularly performs all around the world with major orchestras and conductors includ-ing Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski, Peter Eötvös, Sir Simon Rattle and Riccardo Chail-ly. Through his professorship at the Hochschule Köln, as well as lectures and workshops worldwide, he sheds an inspiring and very personal light on music of all periods.

In the 2015/16 season Pierre-Laurent is Art-ist-in-Residence with Wiener Symphoniker and will perform all of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos under the baton of Philippe Jordan. Other high-lights include solo recitals in Frankfurt, Amster-dam, Sydney, Tokyo and London.

Aimard is also the Artistic Director of the Alde-burgh Festival.

BOris BerezOVsky, PiaNO (russia)

Born in Moscow, he studies at the conservatoire with Elisso Virsaladze and takes specific classes with Alexander Satz. He made his début in 1988 in London at the Wigmore Hall. Two years later, he received the gold medal at the International Tchaikovksy Competition in Moscow.

Boris Berezovsky has played with the top direc-tors from the most prestigious orchestras of our time, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the New York Philaharmonic. He is a regular guest of the largest series of recitals, and is particularly involved in chamber music with partners Vadim Repin, Henri Demarquette and the Borodin Quartet.

In August 2004, the DVD that the trio of B. Berezovsky, D. Makhtin et A. Kniazev dedicated to Tchaikovksy received the Diapason d'Or. They stand out for their numerous prizes from the Choc de la Musique in France, the Gramophone in England, and the Echo Klassik Preis in Germa-ny. In 2006 he was named best instrumentalist by the BBC Music Magazine Awards.

Two years ago, he took over from his good friend Brigitte Engerer as the Artistic Director of the Festival Pianoscope de Beauvais.

HeLMut deutsCH, PiaNO (austria)

Helmut Deutsch ranks among the finest, most successful and in-demand song recital accompanists of the world. He was born in Vienna, where he studied at the Conservatory, the Music Academy and the University. He was awarded the Composition Prize of Vienna in 1965 and appointed professor at the age of twenty-four. Although he has performed with leading instrumentalists as a chamber musician, he has concentrated primarily on accompanying in song recitals. At the beginning of his career he worked with the soprano Irmgard Seefried, but the most important singer of his early years was Hermann Prey, whom he accompanied as a permanent partner for twelve years. Subsequently he has worked with many of the most important recital

singers and played in the world’s major music centres. His collaborations with Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau and Michael Volle are currently among his most important. Deutsch has recorded more than a hundred CDs. In recent years the development of young talent has been especially close to his heart. After his professorship in Vienna he continued his teaching primarily in Munich at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, where he worked as a professor of song interpretation for 28 years. In addition he is a visiting professor at various other universities and is sought-after for an increasing number of masterclasses in Europe and the Far East. The young Swiss tenor Mauro Peter was one of his last students in Munich and has become one of his favourite recital partners.

rOger MurarO, PiaNO (FraNCe)

Born of Venetian parents in Lyon in 1959, Roger Muraro began studying the saxophone in his na-tive city before teaching himself to play the piano. At the age of nineteen he entered Yvonne Loriod’s class at the Paris Conservatoire and met Olivier Messiaen. He quickly became established as one of the leading interpreters of the French compos-er, to whom he devoted a complete recording of the solo piano works, finished in 2001, that earned unanimous critical acclaim. His performanc-es without a score of Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus and the complete Catalogue d’oiseaux are regarded as not only a prodigious feat, but also an intimate appropriation of the works of Messiaen, with which he identifies totally.

While he is gifted with a dazzling technique, hav-ing studied for several years with Éliane Richepin and won prizes at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Liszt Competition in Parma, his

playing is invariably placed at the service of poet-ry and sincerity. His artistry, at once oneiric and lucid, imaginative and rigorous, is equally at home in Mussorgsky, Ravel, Albéniz, Rachmaninoff, Debussy and in Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Schu-mann, from whose music he extracts the full range of emotion, colours, hypersensitive Romanticism and sonic atmospheres.

Roger Muraro is a welcome guest as a recitalist in the world’s leading concert halls, and works with today’s foremost conductors and most prestig-ious ensembles. Eclectic, open to a musical world without frontiers, he now distils his experience as a pianist and his pedagogical skills for the students of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Mu-sique et de Danse de Paris.

For seven decades, the Borodin Quartet has been celebrated for its vision and authority in chamber music. Revered for its profound knowledge of the works of Beethoven and Shostakovich, the quar-tet is equally at home in performing anything from Mozart to Stravinsky. The particular affinity of the Borodin Quartet for Russian repertoire has come from contact with Dmitri Chostakovitch who has always followed the preparatory work as well as the performance of his works. The quartet regu-larly plays Shostakovich all around the world and their performances today reflect this. The quar-tet is currently the longest standing quartet that is still active, ensuring the longevity of ancient traditions. The quartet’s performance of Shostak-ovich’s compositions have been applauded world-

wide. In recent years, the quartet has returned to a broader repertoire including Schubert, Prokof-iev, Borodine et Tchaïkovski, continuing to receive international acclaim. Their 70th anniversary in 2015 was cause for an international tour around the world’s most beautiful stages, at internation-al festivals such as Schleswig Holstein, Rheingau, Tokyo Spring, Proms Snape, Istanbul Music and the Festival Dvorak in Prague. Programmes in-clude quartets by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Miaskovski, Shostakovich – and of course Borodine; as well as quintets with part-ners including Boris Berezovsky, Alexei Volodin, Michael Collins, Elisabeth Leonskaja and Ludmila Berlinskaya.

swiss CHaMBers sOLOists (switzerLaNd)

Founded around the turn of the millennium, the Swiss Chamber Soloists is a chamber ensemble that was created to bring together leading performers from all across Switzerland, along with acclaimed guests artists from abroad, so as to present and perform sophisticated programs of chamber music. On the initiative of its three artistic directors, Jürg Dähler (Zürich), Daniel Haefliger (Geneva), and Felix Renggli (Basel), the Swiss Chamber Concerts series was initiated in 1999 to present performances by the ensemble, in various formations. It therefore represents the first national concert series devoted to chamber music, with a presence established in Basel, Geneva, Lugano and Zürich. Thanks to daringly conceived programs as well as first-class performances, the concerts of the Swiss Chamber Soloists have earned a reputation as a highly acclaimed component of Switzerland’s cultural scene. The SCS ensemble counts many renowned musicians among its players, including Bruno Canino, Dénes Várion, Heinz Holliger, Thomas Zehetmair, Christophe Coin, and Christoph

Prégardien – and many more who appear as guest artists with the ensemble.

The Swiss Chamber Soloists’ repertoire spans from the baroque, which is played on period instruments, to the contemporary and includes many recent pieces written specifically for and dedicated to the Ensemble. Its rich and committed experience as an advocate for contemporary music is reflected in the Ensemble’s highly involving performances of works by such significant composers as Carter, Ferneyhough, Kurtág, Ligeti, Yun, and Zender, as well as in the numerous world premieres of works by leading Swiss composers, including Blank, Dayer, Furrer-Münch, Gaudibert, Gubler, Haubensak, Holliger, Käser, Kelterborn, Kessler, Kyburz, Lehmann, Moser, Roth, Schnyder, Tognetti, Wyttenbach, Vassena, and Zimmerlin. Excellent reviews, concert tours throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia, and an ongoing legacy of CD recordings and radio broadcasts attest to the first-class reputation of this renowned Swiss ensemble.

Over many years of work, the members of La Venexiana have developed a new style of perfor-mance: a spicy, Mediterranean blend of narrated texts, a colourful rhetoric and a refined harmo-ny. The ensemble’s resounding success is worthy of the great art of the Italian madrigal. The mu-sicians are guests of all major concert halls and international festivals, including the Cité de la musique à Paris, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus and Musikverein de Vienne, the Konzerthaus, as well as the Montpellier, de Lyon, d’Uzès and Schwetzingen festivals. These invita-tions lead the renowned ensemble to the Haen-del-Festspiele Halle, the Klangvokal Dortmund, to Venise and Cracovie as well as Schwetzingen to celebrate 450 years of Monteverdi in 2017.

The Madrigal Cds composed by Sigismondo d’In-dia, Luzzaschi, Marenzio, Gesualdo and the com-plete madrigals books by Monteverdi have de-lighted critics and have won various awards such as the Diapason d’Or, the Prix Amadeus, the Gram-ophone Award, the Prix du Festival de Cannes, the Editor’s Choice of Répertoire, the Prix Cecilia as well as the Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten-kritik. 2012 saw the release of Luzzaschi’s album "Concerto delle Dame". In addition to this, the la-bel Glossa put together a collection of books of the madrigals of Monteverdi. The ensemble will three new albums with Glossa, including Cavalli opera duets.
