Sometimes inspiration can be found right outside your window, a car or a house across the street. Sometimes it’s right in front of you. Maybe you have a cup of tea in a pretty cup and saucer that you got from a special person, or just a thrift store. Add a cookie and you have a still life. Lighting can inspire you, sunshine streaming through your window might inspire you to set up a glass still life, even though glass is one of my many ongoing struggles. A new brush or new paints can inspire a new approach to a common subject. Changing your routine or location, like outdoors instead of indoor can help. Not every attempt is going to be a masterpiece, although there are some who are able to do that on a moment’s notice. Inspiration can be the start of something, the middle of something or the end of something. How to know when you’re done, a frequently asked question, has no one answer. When I’ve decided I’m done with a painting, I sign it and get the good ones framed. As I look at the framed results, sometimes I wish I had waited because I now see thing that I would change or improve. I don’t know if that’s true for most people, but since I won’t reframe the piece, it will have to do. Leaving it alone for several days or weeks before framing allows me to see it more clearly. Even taking a photograph of the “ final” picture before framing, allows me to see things that I don’t see with my eyes. Inspiration might cause me to make changes. If that inspiration is good, my picture will improve. If I should leave it alone, I hope I am inspired to do that, as well. So, INSPIRATION is a tricky business. Sometimes it shows up in the most unusual places and sometimes it never shows up at all. Sometimes it needs to be coaxed and nurtured or it will hide for a very long time. But never fear, that creative expression is always there trying to get out. If you are afraid to start, just start. A pencil drawing, a new ink pen; those things get me excited about the possibilities. A colored marker with a fine point can inspire me to draw on a blank bank stub while I’m waiting for my plane at the airport. Sometimes, it doesn’t take much to inspire the creative spirit within!

Happy Spring to everyone! I’ve been thinking about what to write about this month. Thinking

about it more than writing it. So here we go. INSPIRATION! Where does it come from, what

inspires you, how to generate inspiration when you seem to be stuck. There really is not one

magic answer, or exact process. Everyone has their own way of finding it when they need it.

Artists are always looking for ways to inspire something new and exciting to create. Maybe a

new approach to a subject will inspire something wonderful. Maybe a change of environment

will trigger the imagination. Some artists go to the far reaches of the world looking for that

inspiration. I could use that as an excuse to see the many wonders of the world but since I

don’t have a big bank account, I’ll have to stay closer to home. Sometimes inspiration can be

found right outside your window, a car or a house across the street. Sometimes it’s right in

front of you. Maybe you have a cup of tea in a pretty cup and saucer that you got from a

special person, or just a thrift store. Add a cookie and you have a still life. Lighting can inspire

you, sunshine streaming through your window might inspire you to set up a glass still life,

even though glass is one of my many ongoing struggles. A new brush or new paints can

inspire a new approach to a common subject. Changing your routine or location, like outdoors

instead of indoor can help. Not every attempt is going to be a masterpiece, although there are

some who are able to do that on a moment’s notice. Inspiration can be the start of

something, the middle of something or the end of something. How to know when you’re

done, a frequently asked question, has no one answer. When I’ve decided I’m done with a

painting, I sign it and get the good ones framed. As I look at the framed results, sometimes I

wish I had waited because I now see thing that I would change or improve. I don’t know if

that’s true for most people, but since I won’t reframe the piece, it will have to do. Leaving it

alone for several days or weeks before framing allows me to see it more clearly. Even taking a

photograph of the “ final” picture before framing, allows me to see things that I don’t see

with my eyes. Inspiration might cause me to make changes. If that inspiration is good, my

picture will improve. If I should leave it alone, I hope I am inspired to do that, as well.

So, INSPIRATION is a tricky business. Sometimes it shows up in the most unusual places and

sometimes it never shows up at all. Sometimes it needs to be coaxed and nurtured or it will

hide for a very long time. But never fear, that creative expression is always there trying to get

out. If you are afraid to start, just start. A pencil drawing, a new ink pen; those things get me

excited about the possibilities. A colored marker with a fine point can inspire me to draw on a

blank bank stub while I’m waiting for my plane at the airport. Sometimes, it doesn’t take

much to inspire the creative spirit within!

Member Information: A long time dedicated member of GEAG has passed away.

JoAnn Murry contributed her time and energy to supporting the Guild helping to

make it the wonderful organization it is today. She was awarded Lifetime

Achievement Award for her contribution to GEAG over the years. A $50

Scholarship award in JoAnn’s name has been added to our usual GEAG

scholarships presented at Art on the Square.

The yearly Show at Our Lady of the Shrine is coming up in July. More information

to come. Up to 3 pieces can be entered. We have many prizes and a large number

of people will see your art over the course of the exhibit. So, think about creating

or entering 3 pieces you’ve done in last couple of years.

Finally, I’d like to thank Kathy and Jack Odle for hosting a small group of GEAG

members at their beautiful home, for a Paint Out on Sat. April 22. The weather

was not cooperative but we bundled up and painted on. Kathy and Jack kept us

going with hot coffee and a warm welcome. Maybe when the weather is warmer

we can take better advantage of the Odle’s beautiful surroundings.

Happy Inspiration!

It is with regret we announce the passing of JoAnn Murry, a founding member of the Gateway East Artist Guild. Among JoAnn’s many successes, she was a frequent award winner, teacher, and accomplished painter and mosaic artist. She was also a past honoree of the Gateway to Art Exhibit at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows and a honored lifetime member. We will be presenting a memorial award in her honor to a student in the Art on the Square High School Exhibit. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family.
