Vol. 23, Issue 10 October 2019

Welcome to new member, Robert Howard! We look forward to getting to know you and hope to see you at our meetings and outings.

This year’s Trunk or Treat event was a hit! Several members opened the trucks of their vehicles and generously gave away lots of rocks. Most of us prefer a rock to candy! Thanks to all who participated!

This is a reminder that elections of club officers and board take place every November. A ballot is included in this month’s Rock Talk. It is important that you bring the completed ballot to the November meeting; or mail it in before the deadline if you are unable to attend so that your vote can be counted.

Many thanks go to club Librarian Yvonne for gathering some older publications that were sold during our meeting. We didn’t “win the lottery” with sales, but it did reduce some of our inventory. If you check out a publication, please remember to return it at the next meeting.

Remember our wonderful Arizona minerals display at the Show Low Historical Museum. Check it out along with some amazing historical

items pertaining to the history of life “on the mountain.”

At the meeting, Karen mentioned a pocket size mineral identification book that some of us use. It is entitled Arizona Rocks & Minerals by Bob and Dan R. Lynch, published by Adventure Publications (ISBN 1-59193-237-8). It contains lots of information and color pictures to help identify your specimens. The publisher has also printed similar books for several other states.

Our December holiday party/mini meeting is a time for some fun and to enjoy great food and “rock talk.” Further details will be published in next month’s Rock Talk. However, we need two or three volunteers to cook a ham, turkey, or roast. You will be reimbursed for your purchase. All other food is provided by our members per our usual potlucks. We usually have a large turnout, so be prepared.

Have a great month!

Rose Fowers

Our next meeting is November 3. For those whose last names begin with A-H

(Or any of you who are great cooks) Please bring snacks and remember cleanup duties.

The meeting was called to order by President

Rose Fowers at 1:30 PM. Guest Robert Howard,

who later became our newest member, was

introduced.

Debbie Trimble made a motion to accept the

minutes as published and with a second by

Sandra Angelo, motion carried. Carl Hickman

gave the treasurer’s report. Vice President

Sandra Angelo reminded us to put our name in

her book if we do anything above and beyond

for the club. Rose reported that club member

club’s September field trip. (See Page 6 in Rock

Talk.) Karen Dorsey, Ursula Wilson, and Jeanne

and Stan Arneklev displayed some of the great

specimens from that trip.

Karen Dorsey gave details on the October

field trip which will be along the Coronado Trail.

(See further details on Page 6 in Rock Talk.)

Bill Stalder described the door, raffle, and

50/50 prizes. Brookie Embrey thanked those

who volunteered for last month’s road clean-up.

Rose thanked Toni Mondragon for sending some

rocks to be added to our silent auction and door

prizes.

After a short break, Rick Olson gave an

incisive and informative lecture on identifying

rock specimens. He displayed and described

many different lovely rocks and minerals. He

suggested Mindat.org for help in identifying

specimens.

The New Mexico 40th Mineral Symposium on

November 9 and 10 in Socorro, New Mexico was

mentioned. (See Page 8 in Rock Talk for further

information.)

Door prizes were announced; winners were

Robert Howard, Joyce Alves, Donna Pollard and

GENERAL ITINERY: We will travel to Alpine, then on to the Coronado Trail towards Morenci, Route 191, about 73 miles from Alpine.

VEHICLE REQUIRED: It is pavement all the way, so any vehicle can make it.

WHAT WE ARE COLLECTING: Black and mahogany obsidian.

WHAT TO BRING: Rock hammers and chisels for large pieces, gloves, buckets, eye protection, lunch, snacks, sun screen, and lots of water. The club owns a few walkie-talkies; however, if you own any, please bring them for better communication during the caravanning. If you don’t have walkie-talkie, make sure we have your cell number. (Don’t forget to cover up your holes!) For any questions, please call Trip Leader Karen Dorsey at 928-536-2360.

MEETING PLACE AND TIME: Saturday, October 26. Meet in

Springerville at McDonalds and Western Drug parking lot at

7:00 AM, leaving at 7:15. Please have gas and be ready to go.

Eighteen club members traveled down the Mogollon Rim on September 28 to the fire control road past Kohl's Ranch to search for Payson diamonds and geodes. Our first stop was for the quartz diamonds. We spread out and it looked like everyone was finding something. Later we returned to the fire control road and traveled another eight to nine miles to look for the little brain geodes. The geodes seemed to be everywhere; you just had to pick out the best ones. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful area in which to search. Thanks to all who came.

It does, however, get used in the mineral trade as a curiosity called "peacock ore." A favorite among children, the bornite chunks sold as “peacock ore” or “peacock copper” have a rich bouquet of colors. The colors are from an iridescent tarnish forming on bornite upon exposure to air. The tarnish is made of assorted copper oxides or hydroxides that form a mere atoms-thin layer over the bornite. The thickness of the layers is close to the wavelength of light. When light waves bounce between the bornite surface and the top of the tarnish layer, they will leave with the wavelengths of various colors. This effect is the same as the rainbow effect that occurs with oil on water. In the case of bornite, the tarnish will have a purplish, violet or blue color. Because bornite is often intergrown with chalcopyrite, which tarnishes to more greens and yellows, the peacock ore may have many colors ranging from purple to blue to green to yellow.

Although tumbled and polished “peacock ore” is sold on the marketplace, the stones have probably been artificially treated with chemicals. The super thin layer of color will be worn off in a tumbler.

Bornite was named after Austrian mineralogist Ignaz von Born in 1845. It has a very low Mohs hardness of 3. Because of its connection with copper, bornite can usually be found wherever copper mines are located. In Arizona, that would include most of the state!

And by the way, there are those who also claim that handling “Peacock Ore” can “keep you focused in a positive spirit and increase creativity.”

B ornite is an important copper ore mineral. As a mineral

specimen, bornite is usually lacking. Good crystals are rare; thus bornite is commonly known as simply a massive mineral ore.

If you have an interest in new minerals that have been found, learning more about finding agates in southern New Mexico, the significant new discovery of Prehnite in Arizona, and other interesting facts about and new strides in mineralogy, this symposium might be for you. Presented by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, sponsors of the event include various gem and mineral clubs and geological societies throughout New Mexico. This year’s symposium will include a day and a half of 30-minute, formal paper presentations focusing on mineral occurrences and artifacts from New Mexico and adjacent states. A few selected papers may be presented from other parts of the world.

The event is held at the Macey Center, 909 Olive Lane, located on the campus of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. On-line registration is $40. For more information:

Just about every rockhound I know has boxes, buckets, and crates full of rocks sitting around in garages and sheds. And they really don’t want to part with any of them. And this is totally understandable on a number of levels. Someday these rocks will hit the tumbler and the polisher. Someday they will be made into beautiful jewelry. Someday they will all get sorted out. The rocks in this bucket were found on the best rock hunting trip ever! Someday . . . . .

Have you ever considered turning these rocks into art that could be sold at shows, craft fairs, or swap meets? Rockhounds are by nature extremely creative. At least the ones in this club are! I am constantly amazed at the knowledge and the ideas you all come up with.

While cruising the Internet, I discovered an entire venue on using rocks to create lovely artwork. Here are some examples:

The ideas I found were endless and each one extraordinary in its own way. If interested, you might try these sites. Or just put in a search for “rock artwork.”
