President’s Report
Horsham Golf Club – Regional Victoria’s Best Golfing Experience
Our new Manager/Director of Golf, Paul Riley, arrives in Horsham next week. He will
be spending the week getting to know Horsham and setting up his rental home before
starting officially on the June 18. This is a really exciting time for the club and I know
that we will all give Paul a warm winter’s welcome when you meet him. The Board is
also excited with the opportunities that we believe are in front of the club and are
confident that Paul will be lead us in reaching our potential.
There will be an opportunity to meet Paul at the Member’s Roast on Friday the 15th. It
would be great if as many members as possible are out at the club that evening to meet
him. We might take this opportunity to have him say a few words in what will be a very
casual evening. Get organised and make a booking to be there – phone the club on 5382
1652.
Memberships
The membership renewals have been out a week or so now and we are getting
subscriptions in already. Please get them paid ASAP. Our goal is to grow our membership base by 50
people each year for the next 3 years and we need your help to achieve this target. I think that this is the
single most important request that the Board is making of its members at present. We have already had a
number of new member applications from across most categories but we believe there are others out there
just waiting for an invite and encouragement to join. Please assist them in making a great decision!
Proshop move
The Proshop move is now complete and we have received many favourable comments from members and
visitors alike. The reason for doing this is to enable a better member experience. There have already been
some encouraging signs and while we still have some work to do to get the best possible efficiencies, we
are off to a good start. It is a trial and we will be constantly reviewing its success – or otherwise – over
the second half of the year. Special thanks must go to Jenny for doing a terrific job in getting the shop set
up. Thanks also to Craig O’Connor and his team and to Mike Munn and Matt McKinnon for their skills
and commitment in transforming the room. Thanks also to Lewis and Jordy for their effort.
Other
Kerri Phillips finished up as administration officer last week after some 12 months or so. We wish Kerri
all the best with her new job and welcome Carrol Binny in an acting administration officer capacity while
we go through the process of applications and interviews for a newly specified job.
John Ackland finished up as acting manager on May 25th. John did a terrific job and the club appreciates
his stabilising role in giving the staff a point of contact and also in dealing with other stakeholders.

Land
We have rearranged the land sale working group as we try and get a clear understanding of our options
and timing of any land sale. Noel Ferguson, who has done a great job in developing options, has not been
well for some weeks now. Noel will continue to be involved when he can. It will be sometime yet before
we have options for our members to consider.
Sponsorship and Constitution
Growing our sponsorship contribution is important and we are currently working on new sponsorship
packages that offer excellent value for sponsors. With the end of June deadline coming up, if you, or a
business you know would like more information, please contact Adrian Wade on 0419 328 369 to discuss
an opportunity that could suit.
We are also working through the constitution and bylaws and will hopefully have some proposals for the
members to consider by late July. If anyone has a particular area of concern that they want explored,
please send an email to [email protected] stating the area of concern, proposed action
and the reasons why for such a change.
Western Open
The club is pleased that Horsham Telstra – Samsung have taken up the opportunity to sponsor the Western
Open this October for the next three years. This is a fantastic sponsorship and will be an ideal base for
developing a feature event on our terrific course. Thanks to Gary and the team at Horsham Telstra and to
Samsung for their support.
Happy Golfing

Autumn Tournament, the Club Championships, Monthly Medals and two Board Events.
The 2nd round of the President’s Cup was held on 24th March, the A, B and C grade winners on that day

The April Monthly Medal winner was Paul Holmes on the countback from
Craig Kemp with a net score of 64. The May winner was Scott Grover with a
net 66.
The two Board Events contested during the month of May were the Langlands

28th April was won with a very good 4BBB score of 47 points by Owen Wooster
and Michael Gilbert on the countback from Brian Bilson and Ron Pouliot. The
Eleanor Brookes Memorial was a Mixed Canadian format and was held the
next day, the winners being Maggie Clarke and Nick Thomson with a net 71.37.
The Club Championships were held over two consecutive weekends
commencing on Saturday 19th May. In general, only a few shots separated the
leaders in each Category which made for exciting golf. Adam Tribe was able to hold off challengers and
is the 2018 Club Champion with gross score over four rounds of 297. Well done Adam. Second only one

to see Tim Coffey win this event. Congratulations go
to Tim.
Looking ahead into June and July, we start with this
coming long weekend by welcoming our friends from the Southern Cross Golf Club for their annual visit.
Please welcome them if you get the opportunity.

Ladies Golf
Since the last Newsletter, we have had a very busy and enjoyable
couple of months of golf.
President v Captain Stableford was played on Thursday 5th April.
59 women competed, with the Captain’s team winning for the 3rd
year in a row. Scores were average 28.2 stableford for the
President and 29 points for the Captain’s team. It was a fun day
with everyone getting into the spirit of the challenge.
Our Golden Putter on 19th of April was a very successful event. It was the
biggest field that we have had in the past few years. 110 women playing 4BBB
Par on a beautiful day. The Clubhouse was full afterwards with everyone
having lunch and drinks. Winners on the day were Robyn Watts and Sharon
Wynne with 7up on a c/b from Colleen Dix and Leanne Taylor. Our new
sponsor Rod Shurdington, Financial Planning was represented by Clair, who
presented the trophies. As well as the Golden Putters, the winners also
received $100 vouchers to be spent at a Murray River course. Donated by
our chef, Chris Seers.
Medal winners in April and May have been Julie Wirth with an excellent score
of 75-9-66. The May Medal was won by Melika Toy with an excellent score
of 91-22-69, and Gail Jenner was the winner of the Saturday Medal with a
score of 103-30-73. Melika and Gail were first time Medal winners.
The Championships were played in cool and windy weather conditions, but we were very fortunate to
complete the 4 rounds without getting wet. We had 54 entries- A grade - 12, B grade – 27 and C grade -
15. Players who could not play in all four rounds played in the Daily Competitions.
Championship winners were Jenny McRae, A Grade and Club Champion for the 20th time, A Grade
handicap - Julie Obst, B Grade - Peg Muszkieta, Handicap - Joy Tonkin, C Grade - Wendy Rule and
Handicap - Shirley Quick. The Puss Smith trophy was won by Joy Tonkin.
Congratulations to all the winners and all those who
played in the competition! A huge thankyou to Latus
Jewellers for your continued sponsorship of the
Championships. It is very much appreciated.

The helloworld Travel Classic was competed for last Thursday, 31st of May.
We had a fantastic field of 112 entries, with the winners Kerrin Smith and
Barb Uebergang +10, and runners-up Marge Rich and Donna O’Connor
with +8. Also, a hole-in one by Annabelle Plowright on the 15th, and an
eagle on the 12th by Sally Hood! Fantastic girls and great scores everyone!
This is the biggest field for one of our open days for quite a while. Thanks
to Chris Buwalda, the winners will enjoy a trip for 2 to Tasmania. Chris
Seers Catering provided some vouchers for the runners-up. Thanks also for
your support Chris.
The entries for our women’s club competitions and open days are increasing
continually. In April and May, apart from our recent open days with entries
of 110 and 112, we have averaged almost 60 players in all events. This is
due in no small part to the commitment to provide a varied and interesting
fixture. Also, having everyone in the Clubhouse after golf to enjoy a coffee and/or a meal, followed by
presentation of the results makes for a great day of golf with friends. Raffles conducted have raised over
$6 000 in the last 7 months. Thankyou everyone!
Happy golfing,

Autumn Tournament report
The Autumn Tournament was held over the three days starting on
Friday 13th April.
The Friday event was a 4BBB Par event with Golden Putters as the
prize. This was won by John and Brad Gillin with a very good score
of 11 up. It was terrific to see John travel up from Warrnambool and
win the event with his grandson Brad. A great thrill for them both.
The ladies played 4BBB Par with the winners being Marg Moore and
Pauline Salter with 9 up.
The Saturday event was a four person Texas Stableford, the winners
being Iain McNee, Mark Douglas, Ron Dodds and David Rule with an
aggregate score of 117 points. The Ladies winners were Frances
Dalton, Lil Dwyer, Michelle Blain and Louise Cameron from Port
Fairy with 124 points (14 points clear of 2nd!).
Sunday was a 4 person
Ambrose, the winners being Graeme Puckle, David Gebert,
Scott Grover and Pat Dunn with a net score of 56. The Ladies
winners were Frances Dalton, Lil Dwyer, Michelle Blain and
Louise Cameron from Port Fairy with 59 3/8. The Port Fairy
ladies loved our course and the weather conditions! (Ladies

in Queensland enjoying the warm weather, and Amy is exploring Europe.
The annual visit from the Southern Cross golfers from South Australia and Victoria will take place again
over the long weekend - we hope they enjoy their weekend of golf with us.

Course Development Committee
Normal day to day activities on maintaining the golf course have continued. The course has remained in
great condition thanks very much to the efforts of Superintendent Rod, Ayden and Nick. There has been
minor renovations done to the greens following the Championships, mainly in the form of aeration using
solid tines. The holes created should disappear within 5 days or so.
The volunteer work continued in the period leading up to the Autumn Tournament but it has been difficult
to continue this given this event was followed by the ladies and men’s club championships and the
helloworld event. The volunteer program will continue and, while being focused on Thursday mornings,
this doesn’t have to be the case for everyone. Rod would welcome anyone available to help at any time as
there is always work to be done. Rob Pizzoni has started tackling the annoying rabbit problem again but
Rob also really needs help to cover the large area involved. Anyone who can assist Rob with this activity
as well would also be greatly appreciated. Anyone who has time and can help out at any time should
contact Rod Gillin.
A considerable effort has been put into developing a machinery and equipment register that can used and
regularly updated to plan for equipment replacements, particularly planning for the funding of these. A
10-year forward look equipment replacement plan has been prepared, but replacements are still subject to
available funding. In general, the equipment is performing well but as items age, they will require ever
increasing annual maintenance and repair. The bunker raker is an example which was taken out of service
for a couple of weeks for repairs.
Finally, foot prints in the bunkers and damage to the bunker faces remain an ongoing problem. I received
a report from one of the Saturday morning golfers that some bunkers on that morning were a disgrace.
This is not good news and the messages we have been trying to convey to members about raking up the
bunkers and not entering and leaving the bunkers at the low points are obviously not working for some
members. It is incumbent on all members to watch out for this and advise/help playing partners look after
the bunkers correctly. I would like to add that, at the Junior Championships at Nhill recently, a junior
competitor advised an adult of the correct procedure of entering and leaving the bunkers. How refreshing
is that!

Monday Social Ladies
Monday golf continues on. Always available for anyone wanting a 9 hole hit, while at the same time, new
ladies learn the many aspects of the game including etiquette, while improving their skills.
Just when we wonder, ‘where is ???’ ‘she’ turns up! It is especially pleasing to see Tuesday/Thursday fields
continually bolstered with ladies who began, or mostly play on Mondays. Recent Championship results
8
say it all - Peg and Wendy (B and C winners) and Joy and Shirley (B and C nett winners). It was also great
to see the number of ladies having a go at stroke during the Championships. Congratulations also to Barb
Uebergang and Kerrin Smith on their helloworld win.
From June to the end of August, Monday golf begins from 9.00 am and clinics will be planned once Paul
Riley (Manager/Pro) arrives at the Club. June is our Back 9 month and Stableford is mostly offered.
If you know of any potential lady players now is the time to encourage them to come and join us.

Early Bird Report
No Report – Russell has been too busy holidaying!!!
Hole-In-One Competition – New competition started
Any member (male and female) of our club can join the Hole-In-One Club by contributing $50 payable at
the bar; (money to be accompanied by an entry form which provides basic players details).
The money collected sits there until early November. At this point 50% of the fees are allocated evenly
between those lucky enough to have had a hole in one during the year in an official event at HGC. If 100
players entered at $50 each then the pool of $5000 x 50% ($2500) would be distributed to those achieving
a hole in one. If only 1 player had a hole in one they would get the $2500. If 10 players had a hole in one
then each would get $250.
The remaining 50% is distributed amongst the other players via a shoot off from 100, 125 and 150 metres
distance from the 18th or 9th hole prior to Sunday Brunch. Any hole in one on the shootout is regarded as
occurring after the main competition has closed and would only be paid out as nearest the pin on that day.
On the shootout day each club member will have 3 shots from each distance and the winner for each grade
will receive 1/2 of the 50% pool. Grades are handicapped based and will include male and female players
within that handicap bracket. If a player cannot participate in the shootout they can nominate a proxy who
has a handicap within one shot of their own.
If no-one was lucky enough to get a hole in one during the year 50% of the pool will be distributed via the
shoot off and the 50% is put on the bar for food and drinks instead of players paying for the whole luncheon.
A bit of fun for all. Have a crack and support your club.
