DECEMBER 2019

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Happy Holidays and Buenas Noches.

When I took office, I remarked that I was not only honored to serve you but that I had an agenda: to do my best to attract new members and revitalize the group. This was also my agenda as Graphics Chair.

Now, after 2.5+ years pounding the gavel and 5 years creating in Photoshop, I’m pooped. Both physically and emotionally. And to continue my practice of being compulsively self-revealing, often I hide out in my CAA responsibilities to avoid doing my artwork. For these and other reasons, the Board has accepted my resignation, effective this month.

Sylvia Goulden has graciously stepped up and will be Acting President until the June elections. But we are in dire need of a Graphics Chair. And, we have yet to receive an offer to fill Shawn Riley’s huuuuuuge shoes as CAA Treasurer. Our Board has been creative, generous and indefatigable. But it’s time for others to step up. If we are unable to fill these positions, well, I think you can imagine the outcome.

Thank you for allowing me to lead and represent our group. I will continue to offer suggestions that support my original agenda. And I encourage you to do the same.

I really love you and your kind words to me have meant more than you can imagine.

YFS,Wendy Tigerman

“I want to say how much I appreciate Wendy’s presidency. I love her humor and quirkiness, and I appreciate how hard it is to be on a board and make things happen. Thank you Wendy for all that effort. I think you always made it a fun meeting. Thank you to all those on the board too!”--Carrie Gaston, CAA member

Sydney A. Cross, Elephant + Chair

Sydney A. Cross, #3

https://www.sydneyacross.com/

Our featured speaker, Sydney A. Cross, has the impressive resume of a dedicated, lifetime artist: Professor in printmaking and art at Clemson University 1981-2015, works in the Whitney and Smithsonian collections, teacher at CSUN since her move to southern California. She had a lot to teach about being an artist: the formulation of her own social commentary expressed with an assortment of mindboggling, complex printmaking techniques.

COLLAGE-BASED ART—She often pieces together multiple images, found in magazines and photo archives, in strip formats recalling geologic strata. She then prints and enhances the images.

PRINTING PROCESSES include stone lithography, woodcut, silk screen, linoleum cut, Xerox prints using gum arabic, and water-based Ink Aid applied to inkjet graphics to enhance color. She prefers Fabriano and hot-pressed papers.

EXCHANGES—Sydney recommended that printmakers trade works amongst each other in defined groups.

GUEST SPEAKER: SYDNEY A. CROSS

Sydney A. Cross, Elephant + Chair

Sharon Brooks won an excellent print, “Hy-end.” The images of the top strata are slivers taken from luxury fashion ads, art, and news. They were photographed, four-color separations were made, then screenprinted. In contrast, both conceptually and technically, the bottom image of a hyena was made with a resist technique, where ink was pushed into the paper, on top of a layer that had been printed with a very different substance. The artist wanted to make a statement about the contemporary consumptive lifestyle and the natural world. She feels that what matters most is how we treat each other. Sydney Cross made several pieces with a similar theme.

Among the spectacular works were the single-block linoleum prints redrawn from a smaller collage. Both the print and original collage are shown here. In “My Luxury Strata” Sydney includes 4 geologic layers or strips. The Golden-Cut linoleum block was heated to soften it, was printed, then cut more, then registered and printed, then cut some more. There were as many as 20 colors and a large number of painstaking steps.

In this bold work, the artist incorporated a small real tree.

Model collaged from paper Linoleum print based on the collage

In “Bauble” Sydney comments that nature survives if it makes a profit. Shown here are a beautiful vase of flowers and a rhino that puts on a show playing with a ball.

Thank you to Carrie Gaston for excellent supplemental notetaking.

Lari Pittman: Declaration of IndependenceSEP 29, 2019–JAN 5, 2020HAMMER MUSEUM 10899 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024 (Westwood)

“From his earliest experiments with collage and decoration during his formative years at California Institute of the Arts, to the iconic paintings produced in response to the AIDS crisis and culture wars of the 1990s, to his present philosophical investigations into the history-telling of textiles, Pittman’s works have remained some of the most prescient and influential of any artist since the 1980s. His highly detailed works on panel and paper—grand tales about love, sex, death, art, and citizenship—feature a rich visual language that he has developed over the course of his four-decade career.” Susie Gesundheit says there’s lots of collage. https://hammer.ucla.edu/exhibitions/2019/lari-pittman-declaration-of-independence

A large group of colorful works utilizing fiber are on display the SFVACC in Tarzana through December 21. Collagists will find kindred spirits among the artists; many are CAA members who adeptly experiment with materials. Two groups have combined forces: Surface Art Association and Frayed Edges. This is among the best shows presented at this locale, and it’s open for the holidays. Marketplace items are for sale.
