Joys of the Season

The earth has grown old with its burden of careBut at Christmas it always is young,

The heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fairAnd its soul full of music breaks the air,

When the song of angels is sung.- Phillip Brooks

Processional

Nanita Lullaby arr. Earlene Rentz (b. 1956)

A la nanita nana, nanita ea. Mi niño sueño, bendito sea.My child is sleepy. He will be blessed.Fuentecilla que corres clara y sonora,Like a fountain that runs clear with the sounds of running water,Ruiseñor que en la selva cantando lloras,Like a bird singing in the forest, he sings and cries,Callad mientras la cuna se balancea. He is quieted in the cradle that is swinging.

Ave Maria Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)

Ave Maria, gratia plena,Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in milieribus;et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus.Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Sleep Holy Infant, Sleep Dave Brubeck (1920-2012)

Sleep, holy Infant, sleep.Thy light has filled our darkness.Angels herald Thy birth.Shepherds run from the field.Wise men cross the barren earth.Thou art Christ revealed.

Sleep, holy Infant, sleep.Thy light has filled our darkness.Hark to sweet Mary’s voice;Hear her tenderly sing. All the earth shall now rejoice!Thou art Savior King!Sleep, holy Infant, sleep.Thy light has filled our darkness.Fearful hearts shall be stilled;God is with us again.Thou art prophecy fulfilled, light and life to men.

Sleep, holy Infant, sleep.Thy light has filled our darkness.

Text by Iola Brubeck and Dave Brubeck

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God,pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Still, Still, Still Matthew Culloten (b. 1976)Cody Müller, bass

Still, still, still, one can hear the falling snow. For all is hushed, the world is sleeping,Holy Star, its vigil keeping.Still, still, still, one can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep, ‘tis the eve of our Savior’s birth. The night is peaceful all around you, close your eyes, let sleep surround you.Sleep, sleep, sleep, ‘tis the eve of our Savior’s birth.

Dream, dream, dream of the joyous day to come. While guardian angels, without number, watch you as you sweetly slumber.Dream, dream, dream of the joyous day to come.

Traditional Austrian Carol, English tr. anonymous

What Strangers Are These Dan Forrest (b. 1978)

What strangers are these that wander through the town?Hush, ‘tis Joseph and weary Mary.

And what does he seek so hopeless and in vain?He is seeking shelter for Mary.

For she is the blest and chosen of the Lord,Who will bear to us a goodly King.

And who is this King of whom ye proudly sing?Know ye not the Christ, Jesus the Savior?

What wee child is this that in a manger lies?Hush, ‘tis Jesus Christ, Son of Mary.

Say what fair maid is this whose joy is mixed with awe?O ‘tis Mary, mother of Jesus.

O these are the shepherds and these the magi kingsWho have brought Him their gifts of gold and myrrh.

But why kneel in homage here before a babe? They adore their King, Jesus the Savior.

Singing City page 5

Who are these that march from death unto life? These are they who love Jesus the Christ Child.

And how do they triumph o’er the gates of hell?Through the grace of Him, Jesus the Savior.

He is born to redeem mankind from sin and strife,To bring peace, joy, love and brotherhood.

O where shall I find Him? Where shall I seek?He is here and now, Jesus your Savior.

ABOUT SINGING CITY

Singing City was founded as an integrated choir in 1948 in Philadelphia by Dr. Elaine Brown. The Choir was born out of the Fellowship House movement, and has been deeply engaged not only in creating a community of mind and purpose in Philadelphia, but also in other civil rights and social justice movements since the 1950s. For over half a century, Singing City has been Philadelphia’s premier avocational chorus, committed to bringing people of diverse races, creeds and backgrounds together under the common purpose of music making.

In addition to its deep commitment to inclusion and community building, Singing City has consistently achieved the highest levels of performance practice and artistry. The chorus has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Leningrad Philharmonic, and Israel Philharmonic, and has to its credit a number of critically acclaimed national and international concert tours and festival appearances. The 90-member strong chorus is led by Artistic & Music Director Jeffrey Brillhart and continues to fulfill its original mission, which today encompasses an educational program for youth, the Singing City Children’s Choir, and programs for under-served populations.

Mission

Through Performance, Arts Education, and Fellowship, Singing City is a force for social impact, bringing people together and lifting the human spirit through the artistry of choral music.

VisionPeople throughout the Philadelphia region find fulfillment and

inspiration through music, fellowship, and service to their community.

He directs the 120-voice Senior Choir which sings for two services each week and prepares several special performances each season. SINGING CITY CHILDREN’S CHOIREMILY SUNG, Director

Emily Sung is thrilled to begin her inaugural year as the director of the Singing City Children’s Choir. Sung has worked for and sung with several Philadelphia choirs, including the Mendelssohn Club, the Philadelphia Voices of Pride, the Chestnut Street Singers, and the choirs of Christ Church Philadelphia. She currently serves as the Assistant Chorus Master at Opera Philadelphia and teaches on the conducting faculty at Temple University.

A native of New Jersey, Sung earned her MM in choral conducting at Westminster Choir College and her AB in history at Princeton University. She has been a conducting fellow at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Illinois Choral Conducting Symposium, and the Conductors Institute of Bard College. Her teachers include conductors Gabriel Crouch, James Jordan, Joe Miller, Amanda Quist, Joseph Flummerfelt, Andrew Megill, Paul Rardin, Harold Farber-man, and Mark Shapiro, as well as Philadelphia-based pianist Sandrine Erdely-Sayo and composer Benjamin C.S. Boyle. A versatile teacher and musician, Sung believes deeply that music and the arts bring incredible vibrancy into children’s lives, greatly enrich their education and learning potential, and are a vital force for building community.

The Singing City Children’s Choir (SCCC), is a choral music education and performance program open to children at the James Rhoads Elementary School in West Philadelphia and, beginning last fall, the Wissahickon Charter School in Germantown. Music from all styles and periods form the foundation for musical learning and serve as the basis for the curriculum. Concepts about music (melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, style and performance practice) and musical skills (singing, theory, sight reading, etc.) are taught throughout the rehearsals through singing, listening and analysis. Singing skill and musical understanding are essential components of the creative process and a fundamental resource basic to music education. The children perform throughout the year in concert with Singing City’s adult choir, on their own, and in collaboration with other arts organizations.

Each year at this time we come to you to ask for your support through our Friends Drive. Since our founding in 1948, we have been committed to the idea that our music matters because we know that hearts and minds can be changed through its power. In his acceptance speech for the Elaine Brown Award in Choral Excellence this month, Jeff said, “I view this moment as validation of the power that choral music holds, a power that creates community among diverse human beings who feast together in a language of love, understanding and mutual respect.”

As we enter our 69th season, Singing City will continue to move forward, bringing you outstanding concerts that reflect the human condition, offering creative opportunities for young people through the Singing City Children’s Choir and to embracing under-served audiences with our community concerts. Our work depends on the generosity of others in our community. Your gift to the Friends Drive helps lay the foundation for the future of Singing City. If you are a business looking to make a difference you can do so through our Partner Program. Visit our website to see how you can help.

The ARTS at BALDWIN Baldwin’s arts programs encourage girls to fearlessly express their individual creativity in a fun and supportive environment. Lower and Middle Schools girls discover new talents and build confidence through exposure to drama, art and music. In Upper School, girls explore their passions with offerings including jewelry, computer-aided design, musical theater, improvisation,

directing, a cappella ensembles and more.

At Baldwin, she’s the artist, writer, actor and even, comedian daring to ask questions and take risks. We’re the girls’ education experts who encourage, support and celebrate her. Come see for yourself the Baldwin difference.
