A Note From Our Director, Kathy Burch

"Hello, Dolly!" is one of the most enduring and popular of all Ameri-can musicals. The proof is in the fact that it's probably being performedeveryday somewhere in the world.

"Hello, Dolly!" is the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi's efforts to marry HoraceVandergelder, the well-known half-a-millionaire, and send his moneycirculating among the people like rainwater the way her late husband,Ephraim Levi, taught her. Along the way she also succeeds in matching upthe young and beautiful Widow Molloy with Vandergelder's head clerk,Cornelius Hackl, Cornelius' assistant, Barnaby Tucker, with Mrs. Molloy'sassistant, Minnie Fay; and the struggling artist, Ambrose Kemper, with Mr.Vandergelder's weeping niece, Ermengarde.

Mrs. Levi tracks Vandergelder to his hay and feed store in Yonkers, thenby train back to Mrs. Molloy's hat shop in New York, out into the streets ofthe city where they are all caught up in the great Fourteenth Street Associa-tion Parade, and finally, to the most elegant and expensive restaurant intown, the Harmonia Gardens. There, Dolly is greeted by the waiters, cooks, doormen and wine stewards in one of the most famous songs in the historyof American musical comedy, "Hello, Dolly!"

What happens in the end? Dolly gets her man, of course. Even makeshim glad she caught him! Dolly leaves the stage at the end of Act II with awink to the audience as she takes a peep into Vandergelder's bulging cashregister, and promises that his fortune will soon be put to good use. Shequotes her late husband as she says, "Money, pardon the expression, is likemanure. It's not worth a thing unless it's spread around encouraging youngthings to grow."

"Hello, Dolly!" is an ebullient and irresistible story of the joy of living, glittering with happy songs, shining with loving scenes, alive with thepersonality of one of the most fabulous characters on the musical stage ...Dolly Gallagher Levi!2

and cultural programs such as ours. Herein the BayArea, we are fortunate to havemany companies that have initiated suchprograms. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU mustnotify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If youare employed by one of these companiesand are one of our supporters, take ad-vantage of this wonderful way to supportone of your favorite non-profit associa-tions, WVLO. It isn't too late to matchyour contribution for this season.

Corporate Bonus

Whenever you donate to a non-profitgroup likeWVLOA, you can double yourcontribution to the organization by tak-ing advantage of your company's match-ing gift program (even after retirement).Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributionsis through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one oftheir employees gives to a favorite char-ity.And often, these companies will onlymatch contributions made to develop arts

IN MEMORIAM

GLADYS MACARTHUR113111900-6/14/2003

Gladys served as Secretary of WVLO's Board of Directors for many yearsand was a valued volunteer from the beginning of this organization, assist-ing with the Box Office, helping in the lobby with tickets, programs, usher-ing and selling concessions. Through the last 10 of her 103 years, she lovedreading the WVLO programs, reminiscing about the first few productionswhen we were launching this community theater association and relatingstories of the many "funny" things that happened on our live stage. Hermemory and sense of humor were keen throughout her entire life and wewill miss her wonderful tales of our early years. She had a remarkable lifeand we feel fortunate that she shared so much of it with us.
