Advantages of the Short Pistol

1. We have emphasized for years for the QB to step deep at 5 o’clock or 7 o’clock to mesh our triple play. The short pistol accommodates our desire for depth by aligning the QB 2 1/2 yards away from the center.

2. We reduce the box with our alignment of our slots – our slots previously lined up 1 x 1 off of the outside leg of the tackle when we were under center. Now they align 5 yards wide and level with the quarterback. We did this to make the orbit motion the correct angle.

Page 10: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

3. Quick passing game – Our quarterback simply catches the snap and is in position to throw the quick game.

4. It hits vertically quicker than the true shotgun or true pistol and just a little slower than the under center option game (we lost a yard on our fullbacks alignment).

5. It protects the mesh from being attacked.

Advantages of the Short Pistol

Page 11: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

6. It allows us to widen our splits to 3 feet in the A gap and 3 1/2 feet in the B gap which spreads the defense out and creates great blocking angles and natural creases.

7. It forces the hand-off key to be very definitive in his angle to attack the dive back. Consequently, it makes the read for the quarterback easier.

8. It gives the quarterback more time to read the hand-off key and then transition his eyes to the pitch key, because the pitch key is wider due to our alignment and line splits.

Advantages of the Short Pistol

Page 12: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

1. A two handed snap with end-to-end rotational spin. We had two mishandled snaps this past season in over 750 snaps.

2. The running back lines up with his Helmt five yards from the tip of the ball.

Page 13: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

3. The slots must be lined up on the same horizontal plane as the quarterback. Your motion must be quick and at an angle where the defense cannot recognize the goal of the motion. “undetectable motion”.

4. The quarterback’s footwork is more pivot style footwork rather than stepping on an imaginary clock.

5. The quarterback has to be louder in our no huddle option attack, he is our communicator.

Ferris State Football General Philosophies

In an era of zone blocking and linemen that put their butts to the hole (steer), we want guys that are Physical & Violent.

We are old school, we double at the point of attack & block on

angles

Page 16: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Ferris State Football General PhilosophiesOur teaching progression is

speed off the ball, then learning the steps and body positioning

of the techniques

We emphasize DL movement off the football – creating space with

our blocks on level one guys

Page 17: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Ferris State Football General Philosophies

We emphasize the use of the cut block by our offensive linemen, particularly when working on

Reaching

Page 18: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Ferris State Football Selecting OL Personnel

Centers & Tackles need to be quick & agile.

Guards need to be the best Drive Blockers.

Drive Block

QB

T

We emphasize coming off the ball with a flat back and striking the target, running feet

through contact. Slide the head to pressure, keeping thumbs up / elbows in / hands inside on the breast plate – finish with pressing off

with hips engaged.

Page 28: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Double Team

QB

T

In this instance, it is the Center that has to get his hips aligned with the Guard’s hips. We say “Heavy Guard, Light Center”. The Guard drives & the Center gets hip to hip, then helps. Block

is finished, when the opponent is on the ground.

Release Move

QB

E

The OT, in this case, will release (escape without touching) the DE to get to the level 2

defender. Normally, we will rip through, grabbing grass & lessening the surface area.

LB

Page 31: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Reach Block

QB

E

In charge of Hooking the Level 1 defender – turn your hips on him. No level 1 defender,

track through the near leg of the adjacent DL & work through looking to pick off a pursuer.

LB

Page 32: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Run Reach Block

QB

E

Do not engage, run down the line, looking for next adjacent guy. If adjacent guy runs with

you, fight him for position & turn hips on him.

LB

Page 33: Presents Ferris State University Presents The Show Gun Offense Rob Zeitman zeitmar@ferris.edu

Drive Reach Block

QB

E

Get on railroad tracks & drive the man at a 45 degree angle – no level 1 guy, work to level 2.

LB

Horn Block

QB

E

never chase
