Our Environment: Our Future 2004 – 2014 The Regional Strategy for the South West Environment
DOWNLOAD in PDFKey headline objectives
The strategy clearly states that it wants a region where people benefit from an excellent environment to live in and work in, now and for the future; a region: - where we protect and enhance our distinctiveness and diversity – the variations between our villages, towns and cities, our coast and our countryside; - that continues to benefit from the richness of its important landscapes, wildlife and habitats; - that is free from pollution and contamination; - where we use our natural resources wisely; - where the benefits of high quality natural, historic and built environments are widely acknowledged and provide opportunities for business success and improved quality of life; - where a diverse range of people and communities have access to and value the natural, historic and built environment.

Production and Review Timetable
Launched in July 2004. The Regional Assembly will produce an annual progress report, with the first one having been published in 2005, and the next due to be published in July 2006. A formal review of the Strategy will be undertaken on a three-yearly basis.
Implementation / Delivery
The strategy identifies seven generic areas where action is needed. In order to measure progress in delivering the strategy, a set of targets and indicators have been identified in section 8. These relate to the regional aims for:
landscape and historic environment; natural resources; nature conservation; people and their environment; climate change; wiser use of natural resources; food farming and forestry; tourism, spatial planning and development; and, transport.
Summary of analysis of Strategy against the Aims and Objectives of Just Connect!
The Environment Strategy was launched prior to the publication of the IRS. It was however, prepared within the context of the IRS whilst the IRS was in the early stages of development.
The Environment Strategy is particularly strong in making connections with the IRS aims and objectives relating to population growth and change, and the environment and culture.
The Strategy also makes a number of links to the aims that address the economy, social inclusion, and tackling deprivation and disadvantage. There could however, be stronger links between the environment and the ways that discrimination and intolerance could be addressed.
