Who is theSRS Community Reuse Organization
(SRSCRO)?
• Regional Economic Development entity
• CRO created by Congress (1993) to DOE Communities at end of Cold War
• Business Leaders, Elected Officials, Educators, Economic Developers
• Two state focus is unique in the CSRA
A Regional Focus• Board = 22 members (11 from each
state)• Appointments by
– Business and Developers– Local Governments– Congressional delegation
• Five Counties, Two States
What have we done since 1993?
• $13.6 million invested in regional economic development
• 4,441 jobs created
• Dispose of excess SRS assets
• Position Papers • Remove SRS waste on schedule, fees-in-lieu-of
taxes, contract support for economic development, etc.
• Provided community input on SRS Contract decisions
SRSCRO Mission and GoalsMission: Facilitate Economic
Development related to SRS technology
• Goal 1 – Make best use of SRS Assets• Goal 2 – Advocate new missions for SRS• Goal 3 – Promote CSRA as a world leader in
alternative energy• Goal 4 – Educate and inform the community
regarding federal initiatives• Goal 5 – Serve as a knowledgeable united
voice of the community in regard to SRS
GNEP as a National Initiative• National security concerns
– Developing countries will get nuclear power– Weapons proliferation is at a pivot point– The USA can lead or follow
• Domestic concerns– Electricity demand is growing; global warming is
looming– A diversified electric production base must include
nuclear to meet demand and minimize cost to consumer
– Economics of recycling are proven– OBTW, where do we build the next Yucca?
GNEP at SRS• Two viable sites in the SRS region
• One site includes the Allied General site, previously developed for this purpose
• Extensive public support
• Workforce familiar with fuel processing
• SRS is an excellent location for a multi-reactor energy park serving the Southeast
Energy Communities Alliance Initiatives
• Regular communication among DOE communities
• Building a consensus– GNEP should happen, perhaps two
locations
• Inform Congress of this support
• Monitor DOE and Congressional actions
Task Force Role ?
• Recognize the importance of clean, abundant, affordable electricity
• Educate elected officials regarding spent fuel recycling
• Demand accountability from federal government on the issue of spent fuel
• Keep GNEP concept alive through election cycle
• Represent the citizens of your region and state
