Before this project I like most other people saw weeds as small pieces of nature
which should be removed. I researched into the rate of construction of buildings in
Europe, and realised we are constantly building to facilitate the growing population,
this means getting rid of most green lands. There are 190 million buildings in the
European Union. Approximately. Between them, they consume some 40% of
Europe's fuel. There are several million people employed each year in improving theenergy performance of these buildings. However it wasnt this that I was most
interested in, it was that to make our cities look beautiful we believe that we have to
kill weeds, because they are unsightly. However when I started to take the
photographs I realised they were so strong and they have formed in a way that they
can survive anything, even being covered in concrete and weed killers. Weed control
has always been important, using physical and chemical methods to stop weeds fromreaching a mature stage of growth when they could be harmful to domesticated
plants and livestock. In order to reduce weed growth, many weed control
strategies have been developed in order to contain the growth and spread of weeds.
The most basic is ploughing which cuts the roots of annual weeds. Today, chemical
weed killers known as herbicides are widely used.

What I Wanted To Achieve
I wanted to create images that showed the weed in a beautiful state
but also as a strong and independent living thing.

Self Evaluation
What I understood of the unit was that I had to create a series of landscape
photographs, by this I decided to look at the smaller picture, by looking at the
smaller pieces of environment which we dont regard as our landscape but
that actually makes it up. The work didnt need a specific place as the weedswere everywhere, even when we try and rid of them they grow between the
cracks of our pavements and therefore I searched for the weeds everywhere I
went which made me slightly obsessed with which weed would look the most
beautiful on camera while walking to university and around the local area.
I chose to shoot at night because I wanted the weed to really stand out and to
also lose sense of scale which is what the darkness did. I could have used afast shutter speed and a flash however, the light I ended up using was a
continuous one and therefore I needed the darkness. I think the choice to use
a shallow depth of field worked in my favour with the loss of sense of scale
and also using concrete works as a contrast with the weed and also makes it
look very isolated. I have enjoyed this project and id like to further it. I think
the journey through the experimentation was vital in that it allowed me toachieve the images I wanted to. I would want my photographs placed in a
gallery as an exhibition. During printing I had to do a lot of dodging and
burning to achieve the amount of darkness I needed without the plant going
too dark, I struggled with this because of how small the weed is, I started to
get almost purple circles around it when dodging and therefore I had to leave
some of the areas I wanted to be dark, light.

CityI started in a very different place at the beginning of this project than I am in now. I
started with the concept of seeing reflections in the city and I was a bit lost with this.
However what I gained from these test shoots was the new concept I have come to
build on. During one of my test shoots at Brick Lane I noticed in one of the mirrors I was
shooting with a difference in the two sides of the street, the old vintage shops and run
down city and then new flats being built creeping into the city. In any other city I dont
think this would have been as interesting, however, with this city there is a certain
atmosphere and a vintage fashion which made these new flats just not fit in at all.
I started looking at the intrusion of modern buildings into this area of London.
Brick Lane is losing its bricks as the east London road is being resurfaced to "smarten
up" the area ahead of the Olympic Games.
Tower Hamlets Council said covering the road with tarmac would make it cheaper to
maintain and would distinguish space for traffic from pedestrians.
Transport for London is mainly paying for the project, which will cost 300,000.
BBC News
Due to new builds on Brick Lane, the cluster of streets have been said to be losing its
spice, also referring to the recent rush a bangladeshi people coming and setting up new
businesses and needing more housing, instead of sticking to original architecture
the council has decided to build more modern housing and flats to accommodate the
serge of population in the last few year. Thus reducing the original style of the place.

Development
I started to look at the differences between one side of the street and the
other side, and stopped shooting using reflections as it didnt show what I
wanted it to. I had the idea to multiple expose the images by sandwiching
the negs together to take on the graphic look of Brick Lane and also to
crate greater contrast.
I experimented with putting different negs together and some seemed too
messy even though they look more graphic I wanted people to see the
streets as well as the atmosphere of the street. I decided to use the
photographs of graffiti I took and try nd fit them into spaces of the other
neg such as the road and buildings with a lot of empty space. This gave it
better overall look.

Self Evaluation
The city for me was more difficult than the others because I didnt start with a
definite concept and nothing really sprung to me, however I I have really enjoyed
printing the images and experimenting with multiple exposure. I have realised that
we are losing character in our cities which older people may have experienced as a
lot of towns and cities have now become commercialised and modernised, but
Brick Lane has always stuck to its roots and therefore we have seen it how it has
always been, looking at the new buildings seems odd because this is an area wehave trusted to stay the same and therefore the images are shocking to me because
Its a realisation that we may los the spirit of brick lane. I would put my images in
the context of a campaign to make new buildings similar to the old or in a gallery as
art pieces. I think by sandwiching the negs together it has made the viewer see
both images together and noticing how they are so different and that the new
buildings would change the area so much. I have found this unit the hardest but Ihave gained a lot from it, understanding that sometimes ideas do not just come to
you you have to look for them. I wished I would have noticed what I did earlier
because I could have experimented more and I wihs I could have shot more so I had
more choice as to what negs I would put together. In the future I will shoot more
and I will also look tat tests shoots more closely as this is where I found my final
concept.

Waste
For my waste project I wanted to look at the homeless but in a dethatched way.
By not showing faces of homeless people I became apart from these people. I
didnt want to photograph faces as I feel this would be commenting on theirlives and I felt I had no right to do so because I had no experience of he issue.
Therefore I wanted to photograph the cardboard box as a metaphor.

Context
There are many different
reasons for people to be
living on the streets:
37% - Parents, family,
or friends no longer willing
or able to accommodate
20% - Loss of private
dwelling, including tied
accommodation
19% - Breakdown of
relationship with partner
4% - Mortgage arrears 2% -
Rent arrears
18% - other
69,460 children (or expected children) are living in
homeless households three quarters of the total
accepted
An increase of 44% in households who are homeless
after repossession to 1,520. But this is still a relatively small
part of the whole. The biggest proportion, 20%, are thosewho can no longer stay with a friend or a relative.
In the last three months of 2011, 12,830 households
were accepted as homeless, up 18% on the same period
the previous year
Increasingly, people are being put up in bed and
breakfast accommodation which is up 37% on theprevious year after years of declines
Decrease in the use of accommodation leased by the
private sector to local authorities, by 6% from 27,730 to
26,080 households. In fact, 8,540 households are homeless
because their short lease came to an end, up 39% on 2010
Birmingham has the highest numbers of homelesspeople, with 925 households - but the highest rate in
England is in Waltham Forest, north-east London, where
2.55 households per 1,000 are accepted as homeless,
compared to an England figure of 0.59. Across London,
homelessness is up by 27.4%

Self Evaluation
What I perceived as waste was the waste of life in this person that has been allowed to
live in such poor conditions whether they decided it or not. The waste is the person
and also the opportunity to receive what they could have given to society. I see myphotographs in a gallery as big prints, with the box being included. The coincidence of
being shown these underground houses were a surprise but it worked in my favour,
however my photographic choices stayed the same, I still wanted the box to be in a
city environment which it is and I still didnt want it to be the main focus of the
photograph which it isnt and I also like that it is now more hidden and that it has the
extra emphasis of these buildings also being wasted. This project was exciting for mebecause I experimented with it and found different ways to achieve the same
emotion. I also enjoyed looking into facts ad figures as my other projects thats harder
to do. The issue I had with shooting was m focus, I seem to struggle with focusing and
therefore I had to keep re-shooting. I need to take longer with shooting and taking
more care with my focusing. When printing I had to dodge and burn some of the
darker areas to make the image more dramatic and to make a greater contrastbetween the lighter and darker areas. I would have liked to have furthered my
shooting the box in a city environment but I would want to take the box to bigger
cities like London or Manchester to make the box less obvious in bigger landscape
photographs emphasising the homeless not being noticed in the city and them
becoming part of the city.
