Recognizing Valid and Authentic Sources

© 2011 Kaplan University

Students are inundated with information from:

The InternetTraditional

Media Outlets

Local Publications

and Organizations

Electronic Libraries

Various Multimedia Platforms

Through changes in technologies, types of resources, and availability of resources, students are inundated with information through the Internet, traditional media outlets, local publications and organizations, electronic libraries, and a variety of multimedia platforms. When searching for academic sources for support in their papers and projects, they may wonder, “What's wrong with Wikipedia?” With this abundance of information, students must learn to recognize valid, authentic sources (Association of Colleges and Research Libraries [ACRL], 2000). At the same time, students are expected to master foundational research principles and methodologies– the ability to formulate a research question, outline a research plan, and present research to an academic audience.

Function in the modern world

Succeed in every discipline

Enhances fields of study

Determination of needed research in their fields of study

Allows the connection between other general education literacies

Essentially, Research/Information Literacy is important in General Education studies and beyond for the following reasons: • Research is a skill that every individual needs to function successfully in the modern world. • Students need strong research skills to succeed in every discipline. • Valuable research enhances fields of study and supports their relevance in the world. • Students should be able to determine needed research in their field of study,

discover/access information from credible sources, evaluate resources, and apply research methodology to a variety of products.

• The relationship among research/information literacy and other literacies (communication, ethics, logic, mathematics, etc.) further validates its importance in academia.

According to the Boyer Commission, (1998), “Undergraduates need to become an active part of the audience for research. In a setting in which inquiry is prized, every course in an undergraduate curriculum should provide an opportunity for a student to succeed through discovery-based methods.”

State the results of the study. Analyze why you agree/disagree with the results of the study and evaluate how these results may impact the field of study/health sciences. Do you agree with the interpretation and application of the results? Why or why not? Finally, reflect over the entire article. What is, for you, most important? What do you find most interesting? If you were to complete this research what would you do differently and why? The paper should be 6-10 double-spaced pages in answering each of the above questions (please use Times New Roman, 12 point). Include appropriate references and follow the guidelines of APA formatting. For APA guidelines, refer to the following sections in the Kaplan Writing Center: An Introduction to APA Citation Sample APA Citations APA Manuscript Style Explanation: Students in this 300-level course should be able to reach the proficient level of the GEL 6.1 rubric: “Student work demonstrates an ability to analyze the appropriateness of a research design for a given study.” In this assignment, students are required to not only identify that research methodology used in the study, but they are also required to evaluate the effectiveness of the design, thus allowing them to reach the proficient level of this GEL.

Presentation Transcript: Example 2 -Arts and Sciences Research (PS 220) Introduction: Click on each tab to see how the Research/Information GEL can be used in an Arts and Sciences assignment. GEL-6.2 Apply a professionally recognized method of formatting and documentation Instructions to Students The CD which came with your textbook offers three different practice exams for the Network+ certification which the textbook is intended to support learning for. Take one of these in Assessment Mode. Submit the results and accompanying personal preparation plan. Based on this assessment and your own self-assessment during this course, describe three specific things which could each be done in less than an hour which would increase your understanding of networking principles and technologies. Callingyou Inc is a growing company providing 24-7 telephone support services for numerous companies. They have asked you to prepare a design proposal for their new office network. They will have two offices with a dedicated T1 line between them and would like each office to be able support sixty employee workstations with internet access, central server access, and VoIP. These workstations will be shared by multiple users as the company operates on shifts to provide 24-7 support. Each office will also have eight management offices. In addition to this office support, they also need to support VPN access for employees working from home. And, support for secure internet access customers visiting the office is desired.

The Callingyou Inc executives have no experience with networks but want to be sure that they are making the right decision; so, they have asked that in addition to providing a design that the proposal specifically describe all network design considerations. The descriptions should be thorough but understandable for a layman, and it should be clear how the network design proposed relates to each of those considerations. Your proposal document should be between 4 and 10 pages before including diagrams or references. Visio should be used to generate design diagrams. Prepare a thoroughly researched document on the following protocols. Discuss their use/purpose in the network you designed. Network layer protocols: Internet Protocol (IP), Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP), and Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Transport layer protocols: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Application layer protocols: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Domain Name System (DNS), and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The body of your paper should be from 3 to 5 typed, double-spaced pages. Use 1" margins. The font should be 12-point, Arial. A well-written paper contains an introduction, body, and conclusion. It must also include at least four references. Use APA referencing and citations. Guidance information can be found in the Webliography section of this course. Explanation: Students in this 200-level course will be expected to reach the practiced level of the GEL 6.2 rubric: “Work demonstrates the ability to apply professionally recognized standards of formatting and documentation but contains several minor errors.” This assignment requires students to use appropriate APA-style references for any outside sources used in the paper, thus allowing the student to demonstrate a practiced level of GEL 6.2.

Presentation Transcript: Example 3 - Arts and Sciences Research (PS220) GEL-6.3 Create a viable research question Introduction: Click on teach tab to see how the Research/Information GEL can be used in an Arts and Sciences assignment. Instructions: After you complete the assigned readings, please respond to all questions in both threads. Thread1: Thus far in the course, we have explored a number of issues that can impact children’s development. Select one issue such as bullying in school, poor cognitive development or obesity in childhood (remember there are many other issues that impact development so do not be limited by these examples!). Develop a research question that uses a correlation that attempts to show a relationship between a variable (such as television watching, poor quality childcare) and the issue you selected. 1. Why do you believe there is a relationship between this variable and the issue you chose? 2. If you were to do a study using the question you developed, which method that you learned about in the readings would be best to use? Why? Thread 2: Based on the readings, how do both culture and ethics influence child development research? What are some steps that researchers must take to ensure that children are treated ethically?

Explanation: In a 200-level assignment, such as the one above, students are expected to reach the practiced level of the GEL 6.3 rubric: “Student work demonstrates an ability to successfully identify and formulate a basic research question, but may lack subtlety or depth.” The assignment does require students to create a research question and also provides the student with direction to the basic elements of a research question as well as sample variables and issues. As students progress to higher-level courses, they can build on this foundation and learn to create more original research questions.

Presentation Transcript: Example #4 – Arts and Sciences Research (CE 420) GEL - 6.5 (Research): Use electronic libraries/databases for research purposes. Introduction: Click on each tab to see how the Research/Information GEL can be used in an Arts and Sciences assignment. Research Paper: Preferred Curriculum Model - Extended Evaluation Project Directions: In the Unit 4 Project you assessed two curriculum models and concluded which one best represents your educational philosophy and/or more closely aligns with best practices for private or community schools. You provided relevant support to evaluate each curriculum model. In this project you will be evaluated on your ability to use electronic libraries/ databases for research purposes (GEL-6.5). This paper should include the following three parts. Part 1: In the Unit 6 Research Project you will conduct an extended evaluation of the curriculum model earlier identified as your preferred model. Your examination now should be more extensive as you make additional connections to early childhood theory and determine if this model is supported by current breakthroughs in brain research, relevant current trends, and/ or best practices used in private or community schools. Explain how this model supports best practices like DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practice) and maximizes student development in the following domains: Cognitive

Page 18: Presentation Research/Information GEL · education literacies Essentially, Research/Information Literacy is important in General Education studies and beyond for the following reasons:

Language Affective Aesthetic Physical Social Part 2: Conclude by either defending the curriculum model or questioning it based on this more exhaustive examination. You will need to retrieve documents through advanced searches, refine search strategies, and explain the strategies you used to refine the search in your paper. You are expected to include a minimum of five works referenced with quotes, citations, and/or notations to validate your findings. Part 3: Engaging in a search using the words brain research, early childhood education, child development, and/or curriculum models, etc., will lead you to numerous useful articles. As with all research, it is important to consider the quality of the sites you investigate. For some assurance that the information presented is accurate, search the Kaplan Library, eric.ed.gov, and links for government or respected professional education organizations (for example, NAEYC Position Statements or the ASCD website (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). Since this paper is evaluating your research strategies be sure to explain with details your research methods and evaluation of your findings. Your paper should be three to five pages long, written in Standard American English, in a 12-point font size (Arial or Times New Roman) with one-inch margins and APA style citations. Include a title page and a reference page (but these are not included in the three to five page requirement) as well introductory and closing paragraphs. Be sure to do a spelling and grammar check of your work. For help with citations/references please refer to the APA Quick Reference Guide under Course Home and also visit the KU Writing Center. The grading rubric that will be used to evaluate your final project is located in your class syllabus. Submit your completed project to the Unit 6: Project Dropbox. If you need help using the Dropbox, see the Guide located in the Academic Tools tab. Explanation: In this assignment from a 400-level course, students are expected to reach the Mastery level of the GEL 6.5 rubric: “Student demonstrates the ability to retrieve documents through advanced searches, refine search strategies, and explain strategies used to refine the search.” In Part 2 of this project, students are asked to document these exact tasks for their research project. Part 3 of the project provides the student with some guidance for their searches, reminding students to examine credible, academic sources.
