PROJECT INTRODUCTION

GoalTo create a SMART

Aquaponics System for the Bio Design Studio Exhibit

NeedsA SMART aquaponics

systems because there is limited time to regularly

maintain the system

Page 6: Presentation February 2019 Tech Museum€¦ · Lack of NPK sensors that can be connected to the controller 2. Predetermined software/database for sensors that do not fit under issue

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

MotivationUse as a backend tool to grow plants

to be used for hands-on activities, research, and provide an additional provoking display to augment the

Bio Design Studio exhibit

ImpactOur project directly aligns with the Bio

Design Studio Exhibit’s goals and content by showing visitors how a

self-sustaining mini ecosystem can be used to engage with biology or use

living systems to solve real challenges; such as growing low pesticide food at

home

Functional Requirements

○ Data collection

○ Data processing

○ Quick response time (relay

outputs)

○ User Interface

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Non-Functional Requirements

○ Low-maintenance

○ Easy to operate

○ Server access security

○ Data security (public/private)

○ User acceptance

SYSTEM BASE DESIGN

“Visually stunning and conversation provoking display to augment the exhibit space”

90 Gallon

About 6.7 ft

HeightTank is 2ft above

ground

80/20 Aluminum

About 4.2 ft length

About 1.5 ft wide with

tank included

Space Specifications4.3 ft L x 6.9 ft H x 1.5ft W

Adjustable shelves

Provides a maximum of 18 sq ft of growing medium space

About 1ft apart

“both plants and fish visible to visitors”

PlantsAny types of plants should work with the system. We

will be installing grow lights and daytime light to

support the growth of seedlings.

FishGloFish & Sucker fish

Issue: To support max of 18 sq ft of growing media we need about

18lbs of fish!!

TESTING STATUS & ISSUES

Status1. Configured the Kijani Grows

Smart Controller V2 to transmit

remote data

2. Implemented the temperature and

light sensors

Issues1. Lack of NPK sensors that can be

connected to the controller

2. Predetermined software/database

for sensors that do not fit under

issue 1

TESTING

Set-up is testing...1. The microcontroller features

a. Connection to LuCI Serverb. Data Collection through V2InfluxDBc. Data Graphing through V2Grafana

2. The sensors calibration and fluctuation

Set-up includes...1. Water Temperature Sensor monitoring a

cup of water temperature2. Photocell monitoring room light intensity

based on resistance change
