General Objectives
Ø Fundamental understanding of different organic and inorganic bio-indicators (biosignatures) used for: - understanding and/or reconstructing aquatic ecosystem dynamics (continental and marine) in modern and ancient settings,
- paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate reconstruction,
- characterization of biogeochemical processes and cycles (e.g., the C and S cycles, biomineralization, etc.) at the Biosphere-Geosphere interface,
- …
Biosignature studies and utilization
ü Elemental and molecular constituents of organic matter
(structure, distribution, and isotopic composition)
ü Other organic and inorganic biosignatures
(dinoflagellate cysts, pollen, siliceous plankton, transition metals, ...)
ü Differentiation of specific biosignatures in terms of:
- origin (biological, anthropogenic)
- environmental / climatic changes
(variations of temperature, productivity, salinity, …)
- biogeochemical processes (methane cycle, vulcanization, …)
Ø Introduction to integrated approaches « multi-proxy »
δ13C ≈ -26‰
Vincent GROSSI Organic geochemistry (Biomarkers and processes)
Matthew MAKOU Organic geochemistry
(Quaternary paleoclimates)
Philippe SORREL Palynology / Sedimentology (Quaternary paleoclimates)
Fabrice CORDEY Micropaleontology
(Silica cycle) Anne-Marie AUCOUR Geochemistry

M1-UESedimentaryDynamics
Aim : Give a common background knowledge in sedimentology : intrinsic dynamics of
sedimentary depositional environnements , their spatial organization and associated
structures and geometriesMean : Depositional facies and facies models
- in siliciclastic systems (15h) - in carbonate systems (15 h)
Teacher : Bernard Pittet
M1-UESedimentaryDynamics
Floodplain
Overflow lobe / Crevasse splay
Straight channel
Mangrove
Meandering channel
Any depositional environnment is formed of various depositional sub-environments having a simple or a complex architecture (as illustrated here for a deltaic plain)
M1-UESedimentaryDynamics
This UE is open to everybody! Many students of the TP course have succesfully followed this UE No pre-requisite in sedimentology; if necessary, the basics can be briefly reexamined
Optional teaching units for T&P U.E.s optionnelles T&P

Knowledge Control Terms and Conditions (MCC)
• Teaching Unit (TU/UE) validated if the mean is ≥ 10/20
• Si mean of TU/UE ≤ 10/20 then: a. If the semester mean is ≥ 10/20, TU/UE acquired by compensation b. The student can chose to pass the 2nd exam session, either by refusing the compensation, or because he/she did not compensate (i.e. semester mean ≤ 10/20).
• Be careful, compensation is only possible if the TU/UE mean is ≥ 6/20
• Second session : Ø CC (Continuous assessment of knowledge) grade is kept for the 2nd
session Ø The exam grade from the 2nd session replaced that of the 1st session
(if it’s inf or sup) Ø Reminder: grades obtained during field schools are continuous
assessment of knowledge (CC), hence no 2nd session possible
Election of 2 delegates for the Master Election de 2 délégués pour le Master
2 delegates in total for Master (M1+M2) Before 15th October!
