How to use these lesson plans

This lesson plan packet contains the following: • Book list • 1-page weekly lesson plan grid

o Alternate weekly grids for 4 day, 3 day, and 2 day programs • 5 daily lesson plan sheets • 2-page centers explanation • Printables

Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.

The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds, whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.

The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just print the templates and handwrite your plans.

The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.

The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.

You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

Materials Read Aloud Chart paper and/or butcher

paper; washable ink pads I Like Myself

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy

Descriptive Word Brainstorming Talk to the students about different words that describe themselves, as

well as different words that describe that they can do. On a chart, make two columns – one entitled “I can” and the other “I am”. Record words that you and the children come up with in the

appropriate column

All About Me Bookmaking Print and assemble enough copies of the “All About Me” emergent reader.

Work with each child to record answers on the pages. Children can

add their own illustrations.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Label Body Parts, Day 1 Use large chart paper or large butcher paper for this activity. Have each child lie down on the paper. Trace over the

child, and have her write her name beneath her outline. If time permits, allow children to start coloring their

outlines.

Fingerprint Patterns Children create patterns using their

fingers (and washable ink pads). Encourage children to go back and

“read” their patterns.

pictures of animals What I Like About Me

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy

What I want to be when I grow up Record what job each child would like to do when they grow up. This can be done on chart paper and displayed in the classroom, along with (optional) kids’ illustrations. Keep the list for a

class jobs book later in the week.

Descriptive word journal writing Refer back to the whole group

descriptive word brainstorming. Have each child pick some of the words to describe himself. Work together to write a few sentences using those

words, with the frames “I am” and “I can” as guidelines. Depending on the kids’ needs, this might be dictation,

shared writing, or independent phonetic spelling. Have the children

illustrate their journal stories.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Label body parts, day 2 Individually, or in small groups, have children label the different parts on their life-size drawing of themselves.

How many do I have? Have children take turn rolling the

body parts cube. Then they can count how many of each body part they

have. As an extension, bring in stuffed animals or pictures of animals and do

the same thing.

Family graph Use large chart paper, butcher paper,

or a pocket chart for this graphing activity. Along the bottom of the

graph, add the numbers 0 through 5 (your chart may have more or less,

depending on how many siblings your students have). Children can come

write/place their name over the appropriate number, depending on how many brothers and sisters they have.

Class name matching Print out pictures of all of the

students and teachers. Create name cards for each person as well. Match

the names to the pictures.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Roll and color Roll one of the body parts cubes.

Color the corresponding body part on the Roll and Color printable. When

you've colored all of the parts color the clothing any way you'd like.

How tall am I? Cut a piece of yarn to measure each

child's height. Use this yarn to compare with different objects in your classroom. Find some that are shorter and longer than the children's height.

Be sure to include the teachers in this activity! Label each piece of yarn with

names written on masking tape.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy

Height graphing Use the yarn pieces from the height measuring activity. Graph everyone’s heights on the floor, or use a bulletin board for the graph. Ask questions

and encourage children to make observations about the data on the

graph.

Class jobs book Use the information from earlier in the week regarding what jobs the children

want to have when they’re older. Create a class book, with each child

making a page. Use the frame “(Name) wants to be a . . .” Children can

illustrate, or you can add photos of them dressed up for their future job.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Match the body parts Look at pictures of everyone in the class. Print out photos of just eyes, noses, fingers, etc. Try to match the

body parts to the right classroom member.

Footprint measuring Make footprints of everyone in the classroom by stamping in paint or

tracing on construction paper. Use the footprints to measure various items

around the classroom. Keep the footprints for more activities.

Footprint comparisons Use the footprints from the

measurement activity. Place them in order from smallest to largest. See if

the children can find their own footprints.

Word puzzles Print out the body part word

puzzles. Cut into strips. Child can reassemble these word puzzles.

Discuss letters and sounds while doing so.

Fingerprint exploration Use ink to make fingerprints on paper. Use a magnifying glass to examine the

fingerprints. See if you can match fingerprints to individual fingers.

Fingerprint counting book Make a class book or individual books. Use repetitive text on each page (ex:

“I see 3 fingerprints”). Children add the correct number of fingerprints to

each page.
