1. Speak the rhythms.• Ask children if they have ever played basketball. (answers will vary)

• Display a Shoot Rhythm Card, and ask children what the girl is doing. (shooting the basketball)

• Place four Shoot Rhythm Cards in a row.

• Tell children each time they see a Shoot Rhythm Card they should say shoot. Ask how many sounds this word has. (one)

• Point to each rhythm card on a steady beat, and have children speak shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.

• Display a Dribble Rhythm Card, and ask children what the boy is doing. (dribbling the basketball)

• Tell them to say drib-ble for this card. Ask children how many sounds this word has. (two)

• Replace the third Shoot Rhythm Card with a Dribble Rhythm Card.

• Point to each card on a steady beat, having children speak shoot, shoot, dribble, shoot.

• Have children take turns arranging four rhythm cards in a row, using any combination of shoot and dribble cards. Have the group speak the rhythm patterns together on a steady beat.

2. Speak and clap the rhythms.• Display four Shoot and Dribble Rhythm cards in various combinations, and

have the children clap and speak the cards. (Clap once for shoot and twice for dribble.)

3. Clap the rhythms.• Have children clap several Shoot and Dribble Rhythm Card patterns without

speaking.

4. Add a rest.• Show children a Rest Rhythm Card and ask children what the boy is doing.

(taking a rest from playing basketball)

• Ask children what this card might indicate. (a rest, or no sound)

• Display a combination of four Shoot or Dribble Rhythm Cards.

• Replace the third card with a Rest Rhythm card and tell children that there should be no sound on that beat. Have children blow a tiny puff of air for the Rest Rhythm card, signifying that something is happening on that beat, but there is no sound. (A player that has just come out of the game would probably be breathing out quite a bit.)
