1. Listen and perform motions. • Display Bird, Owl, Bee, and Frog Visuals.
• Echo speak the animal sounds on each visual.
• Teach children motions for each animal sound:
° bird – bring index fingers and thumbs together by both sides of face
° owl – place “binocular” hands in front of eyes
° bee – make tiny flapping motions with hands
° frog – jump middle and index finger on top of opposite hand
• Play Demo 11, and have children perform the animal motions with the words on the visuals. (tweet-tweet-tweet, whoo-whoo-whoo, buzz-buzz-buzz, croak-croak-croak)
2. Listen and move.• Demonstrate stepping in place to a steady beat.
• Play a wood block to emphasize the beat.
• Play Demo 11, and have children step to the beat, stopping during measures 13-18 each time to perform the animal motions.
3. Echo speak and sing measures 5-12.• Echo speak each phrase in measures 5-12.

1. Speak the rhythms.• Ask children if they have ever played basketball. (answers will vary)
• Display a Shoot Rhythm Card, and ask children what the girl is doing. (shooting the basketball)
• Place four Shoot Rhythm Cards in a row.
• Tell children each time they see a Shoot Rhythm Card they should say shoot. Ask how many sounds this word has. (one)
• Point to each rhythm card on a steady beat, and have children speak shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.
• Display a Dribble Rhythm Card, and ask children what the boy is doing. (dribbling the basketball)
• Tell them to say drib-ble for this card. Ask children how many sounds this word has. (two)
• Replace the third Shoot Rhythm Card with a Dribble Rhythm Card.
• Point to each card on a steady beat, having children speak shoot, shoot, dribble, shoot.
• Have children take turns arranging four rhythm cards in a row, using any combination of shoot and dribble cards. Have the group speak the rhythm patterns together on a steady beat.
2. Speak and clap the rhythms.• Display four Shoot and Dribble Rhythm cards in various combinations, and
have the children clap and speak the cards. (Clap once for shoot and twice for dribble.)
3. Clap the rhythms.• Have children clap several Shoot and Dribble Rhythm Card patterns without
speaking.
4. Add a rest.• Show children a Rest Rhythm Card and ask children what the boy is doing.
(taking a rest from playing basketball)
• Ask children what this card might indicate. (a rest, or no sound)
• Display a combination of four Shoot or Dribble Rhythm Cards.
• Replace the third card with a Rest Rhythm card and tell children that there should be no sound on that beat. Have children blow a tiny puff of air for the Rest Rhythm card, signifying that something is happening on that beat, but there is no sound. (A player that has just come out of the game would probably be breathing out quite a bit.)
SMALL-GROUP ACTIVITYHoop-Dee-Do teaches children to read, speak, and play iconic music notation.

PLANNING AHEAD• Make a copy of Kookaburra High and Low KIDPage for each child.
• Gather crayons.
• Gather step bells or resonator bells and a mallet.
GUIDING CHILDREN• Distribute KIDPages.
• Play a high pitch on the step bells or resonator bells. (If using step bells, make sure the children can see that you are playing toward the top of the steps.)
• Ask children if they heard a high sound or a low sound. (high) Have children touch one of Kookaburra’s feathers on the KIDPage and say high.
• Play a low pitch on the step bells or resonator bells.
• Ask children if they heard a high sound or a low sound. (low) Have children touch one of the seeds on the KIDPage and say low.
• Distribute crayons.
• Continute playing high and low pitches on the step bells or resonator bells, pausing after each for the children to color a feather if it is a high pitch or color a seed if it is a low pitch.
EXTENSION• Allow children to play high and low pitches on the step bells or resonator bells for the other children to
identify.
