Origins of the Zombie

Zombie

• The world “zombie” comes from Haitian term “zombi”.

• They in turn got it from a West African Tribe called the Yoruba, where the word meant ‘Snake God’.

Haitian / Creole Origins

• In Haitian Voodoo a zombi is believed to be one who’s soul has been imprisoned causing them to enter a state of temporary death.

Fears of the Atomic Age

• During the atomic age (post WW2) radiation began to be the cause for zombies

• Worldwide fear of nuclear war was one of the primary reasons for this.
