1. Introduction/Background

The April 2015 Earthquake has caused devastated affect in Dhading district. The district has been categorized one of severely affected districts among 14 other districts. The household damage assessment conducted by National Reconstruction Authority has identified 83025 HH severely damaged and need to be reconstructed. Besides damage in personal housing earthquake had effect on other sectors like social, productive, infrastructure and other cross cutting sectors. The government has envisaged that the reconstruction activity is likely to impact on existing environmental and social setting of the project area. Also the reconstruction activities attract prevalent government's rules and regulation and World Banks Operational policies. Currently there are 13 local bodies all of them are namely Nilakantha Municipality, Dhunibesi Municipality, remaining are Galchi, Thakre, Gajuri, Benighat, Siddalek, Juwalamukhi, Tripurasundai, Netrawati, Gangajamuna, Khaniyabas and Ruby valley Rural Municipality. This Small semi urban district lacks infrastructure and technical resources to tackle the problem of growing solid waste. With rapidly increasing population and changing life style, solid waste management has become a major concern. Solid wastes dumping in the river discharge of industrial effluents and domestic sewages and open burning of wastes including plastic have made area polluted.

One day Waste Management and Vermi composting training have been conducted at Galchi Rural Municipality-6 (Baireni Bazar). This is semi-urban area, one of the problems of the urbanization and increasing consumerism is the increased generation of waste. This waste is not being appropriately managed and is therefore creating a serious health and environmental hazard due to haphazard dumping. Management of solid waste is a growing concern in this area as urban population densities increase and flat usable land is in short supply.

2. Objective of training

Overall objectives of the training are as follows:

• To orient community people on basic concept of solid waste and management of organic waste through best suitable composting methods.

• To increase the knowledge and use of effective local hazardous waste management tools

• To provide efficient techniques on Vermi composting Bin. • To provide practical knowledge on organic manure preparation from Vermi-

composting and demonstrated its.

3. Rational of training identification/selection:

The main objective of the waste management program in this district is to provide effective waste collection from households and commercial areas, street sweeping and safe transport to disposal site. Despite its effective system of waste collection, the municipality is facing problems by poor response for its efforts to encourage waste minimization at source. Another major problem is that the waste management workforce is too small to enable the Municipality to achieve its vision. After earthquake rural peoples trains are going to migration from rural to urban area and their housing reconstruction in small land holding, so it directly effects on social and environment pollution in the areas. The inhabitants in municipality were therefore increasingly getting attracted towards compost fertilizers and though in minor number the practice of making compost at household level had already been started at own initiatives. However lack of proper knowledge on the process of preparation of compost and its application techniques was hindering in expansion of its use. Thus as per the need and interest of the women's group National Reconstruction Program (NRA) at District provided a one days long capacity building training on preparation, use and application of vermin composting and other suitable options for composting. 4. Participants:

Participants were selected from open notice from respective ward office of municipality. The priority was given to EHRP beneficiaries and women. 21 of 25 participants are EHRP beneficiaries and 25 participants were female.

5. Training methodology:

The training applied following methodologies:

• Lectures

• Question/Answer/Discussion

• Practice/Exercise

• Group discussion

• Sharing of Experiences

• Handouts

• IEC material

6. Lesson learned and area of improvement:

The training should be more than three days with full practically in the field and site visit planning of the enthusiasm of the participants showed the much insolence of the training in the area.

7. Summary of participants view on training program:

Participants were very positive about the content of the training and have found the training useful on their daily life. They were energetic and have actively participated and were profound to know that the waste generated during activities can be easily managed and at the same time the waste can be used for income generating activities.

8. Conclusion:

Capacity enhances of local people to manage solid waste management and vermin composting is very useful to clean environment surrounding the settlement area. Training on waste management and Vermi composting was found to be useful for the area. The waste generated at household level is expected to be managed properly and the compost produced during the process will be useful on agriculture and kitchen gardening. Even though the training period was very sort, the training was successfully conducted in good coordination with Local level's Ward office and DLPIU(GMaLI).
