Career Fairs are an excellent opportunity to make some las ng connec ons with poten al employers. Employers a end our career fairs to find talent to fill their internships, part‐ me jobs and full‐ me opportuni es. Employers seek talent at Cal Poly Pomona because our students understand how to apply the theory and concepts learned in their respec ve majors in everyday work. Our students are also adept at working successfully in teams, and o en come with prior work experience, having established a strong work ethic.   To be successful at the Career Fair, here are a few pointers to follow:  Create a Twenty Second Introduc on. It’s a quick and simple tool to help market yourself. It conveys a message that introduces your unique skills, qualifica ons, and what you have to offer. It should be brief and intriguing enough so that the employer wants to hear more. Here’s a sample:    "Hi (shaking hands), my name is Tracy Public (pause briefly for the other person to return their introduc on)."  OK, now the clock is  cking. You have twenty seconds... "I will receive my BS in Accoun ng in June from Cal Poly Pomona and have been working in the accoun ng field for more than two years, doing both general accoun ng and audi ng. This past summer I worked for the New York office of Ernst & Young in an Auditor Internship. I'm currently seeking an auditor posi on, and I’m interested to know what opportuni es your company has.”   Make Your First Impression! Be courteous, enthusias c and confident. First impressions are important. Showing genuine and realis c interest in the company will make a good impression. Overconfidence and interest only in the best dollar offer will create a nega ve impression. Business casual a re is recommended (or professional a re if you prefer).   Research the Companies! Review company websites and familiarize yourself with the companies so that you will be able to ask intelligent, well thought‐out ques ons at the Career Fair. Employers will appreciate you more for this effort. 

 Priori ze your Time! Review the par cipant list, select the companies you are most interested in learning more about and visit them first.     Keep Your Op ons Open! Talk with all the recruiters who might be interested in your major, background and goals. Keep in mind that companies will hire a myriad of employees. A single company may have openings in everything from finance to sales to graphic design! Don’t forget to explore the lesser‐known companies and keep an open mind.     Ques ons! Ques ons! Ques ons! Use this opportunity to increase your knowledge of the company and its job op ons, the quali es and skills the recruiter is looking for in a good candidate, advancement and promo on paths, and training programs. Also ask about part‐ me posi ons and internships.     Bring Your Resume! Remember that your resume is a marke ng tool that describes you. Cover basics such as educa on, skills, work experience and accomplishments that are relevant to the industry, company, or posi ons of interest. Be sure to include your computer and language skills.   Establish Contact! If you find companies of interest, be sure to collect business cards, appropriate informa on, and handouts. You may also send a “thank‐you” le er to the recruiter with whom you spoke with.  A le er is a good way to jog their memory of you and to reemphasize your enthusiasm and interest in the company.  On‐Campus Interviews! Many of these companies will hold on‐campus interviews. If you are a senior, you may be eligible to sign up for these interviews.

Before stepping into an interview, be sure to prac ce, prac ce, prac ce. A job‐seeker going to  a job interview without preparing is like an actor performing on opening night without rehearsing.  To help with the interview process, keep the following ten rules in mind:  1) Keep your answers brief and concise. Unless asked to give more detail, limit your  answers to two to three minutes per ques on. Tape yourself and see how long it takes you to fully answer  a ques on.  2) Include concrete, quan fiable data. Interviewees tend to talk in generali es. Unfortunately, generali es o en fail to convince interviewers that the applicant has assets. Include measurable informa on and provide details about specific accomplishments when discussing your strengths.  3) Repeat your key strengths three mes. It’s essen al that you comfortably and confidently ar culate your strengths. Explain how the strengths relate to the company’s or department’s goals and how they might benefit the poten al employer. If you repeat your strengths then they will be remembered  and—if supported with quan fiable accomplishments—they will more likely be believed. 4) Prepare five or more success stories. In preparing  for interviews, make a list of your skills and key assets. Then reflect on past jobs and pick out one or two instances when you used those skills successfully. 5) Put yourself on their team. Ally yourself with the prospec ve employer by using the employer’s name and products or services. For example, “As a member of __________, I would carefully analyze the __________ and __________.” 

Show that you are thinking like a member of the team and will fit in with the exis ng environment.  Be careful though not to say anything that would offend or be taken nega vely. Your research will  help you in this area.  6) Image is o en as important as content. What you look like and how you say something are just as important as what you say. Studies have shown that 65 percent of the conveyed message is nonverbal; gestures, physical appearance and a re are highly influen al during job interviews.  7) Ask ques ons. The types of ques ons you ask and the way you ask them can make a tremendous impression on the interviewer. Good ques ons require advance prepara on. Just as you plan how you would answer an interviewer’s ques ons, write out specific ques ons you want to ask. Then look for opportuni es to ask them during the interview. Don’t ask about benefits or salary. The interview process is a two‐way street whereby you and the interviewer assess each other to determine if there is an appropriate match.  8) Maintain a conversa onal flow. By consciously maintaining a conversa onal flow—a dialogue instead of a monologue—you will be perceived more posi vely. Use feedback ques ons at the end of your answers and use body language and voice intona on to create a conversa onal interchange between you and the interviewer.  9) Research the company, product lines and compe tors. Research will provide informa on to help you decide whether you’re interested in the company and important data to refer to during the interview. 

10) Keep an interview journal. As soon as possible, write a brief summary of what happened. Note any follow‐ up ac on you should take and put it in your calendar. Review your presenta on. Keep a journal of your a tude and the way you answered the ques ons. Did you ask ques ons to get the informa on you needed? What might you do differently next  me? Prepare and send a brief thank‐you le er. Restate your skills and stress what you can do for the company.  In Summary Because of its importance, interviewing requires advance prepara on. Only you will be able to posi vely affect the outcome. You must be able to compete successfully with the compe on for the job you want. In order to do that, be certain you have considered the kind of job you want, why you want it and how you qualify for it. You also must face reality: Is the job a ainable? In addi on, recognize what it is that employers want in their candidates. They want “can do” and “will do” employees. Recognize and use the following factors to your benefit as you develop your sales presenta on. In evalua ng candidates, employers consider the following:  Ability       Character      Recommenda ons      Loyalty    Ini a ve      Personality • Work Record • Communica on skills       Outside ac vi es while in school  Impressions made during the interview  Wri en by Roseanne R. Bensley, Career Services, New Mexico State University .Reprinted with permission from College Recruitment Media.

What are employers looking for when selec ng candidates?   How can students make a posi ve impression at the job fair?     We asked Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recrui ng & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits and Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. to share their perspec ve.  Here’s what they had to say:  Q: What should students do to prepare for a career fair? A: To get a compe ve edge, students should always do research on the companies that they plan to speak with. When a recruiter sees that the student knows about the company, what open posi ons they have and what they are interested in, it shows that the student is very organized and proac ve. I also highly recommend students stop by the Career Center and have their resumes cri qued. ‐ Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.   Q: How do you expect students a ending a career fair to dress? A: Students should definitely dress in business a re. On hot days it is hard to wear a formal black suit, so in those instances, a dress shirt,  e and slacks will s ll convey a professional image.   ‐ Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.   Q: How can students create a posi ve first impression? A: Students can create a posi ve first impression by simply being prepared. Know which employers you are interested in talking to and have ques ons ready.  ‐ Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recrui ng & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits   Q: What are you looking for when screening a candidate? A: I look for confidence and personality when screening a candidate. I also look for good communica on skills. When working in sales, you must be able to approach anyone and build rapport with them. I am interested in students who are proac ve in star ng a conversa on with me.  ‐ Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recrui ng & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits    A: At Panda, we look for students that have a strong willingness to learn  

 and one that is very humble, but s ll confident. Some mes students are so focused on selling themselves, they forget to be humble about their abili es. ‐ Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.  Q: What is the most common mistake you see students make at career fairs? A: The most common mistake students make is visi ng only those employers that they are interested in or that are “more popular.” Students should take advantage of exploring at least 5 other companies that they know nothing about and find out if the perfect opportunity is awai ng them. ‐Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.  Q: What are the key factors in your decision to call back a student? A: I make the decision to call back students based on who shows genuine interest in Southern Wine & Spirits, as well as those who displayed confidence and enthusiasm. Those who just drop off a resume and walk away expec ng a call will probably not be called. ‐ Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recrui ng & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits   Q: When can students expect to receive an invita on to an interview following a career fair?
