PRELIMINARY: U.S. IMPORTS FOR CONSUMPTION OF STEEL PRODUCTS, March 2021 Release Number: CB 21-63 FT-900A (21-03)

April 23, 2021 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that preliminary March steel imports were $2.0

billion (2.1 million metric tons) compared to the preliminary February totals of $1.6 billion (1.7 million metric

tons).

The March change in steel imports based on metric tonnage reflected increases in sheets and hot dipped

galvanized strip; sheets and strip; and reinforcing bars. Decreases occurred in hot rolled sheets, heavy

structural shapes, and line pipe. Increases occurred primarily with Canada. Decreases occurred primarily with

Brazil, Turkey, and Sweden.

The year to date final statistics through February 2021 showed steel imports of 3.9 million metric tons

compared with 4.2 million metric tons through February 2020. The largest commodity decrease occurred

primarily in sheets and hot dipped galvanized strip. Increases occurred primarily in hot rolled sheets; structural

pipe and tube; and tin free steel. The largest country decreases occurred with Brazil. Increases occurred

primarily with Turkey, United Kingdom, and Korea.

The data in this report are preliminary and subject to revisions. Analysis of recent months for steel product

imports indicates the value of preliminary data should equal about 96 percent of the final value reported

in the regular monthly trade statistics report. Preliminary data reported for individual steel categories and

at the individual country of origin level have been less consistently predictive of the final data reported in
