The Colorado Community College Consortium has been awarded $25million dollars to implement the Colorado Helps Advanced Manufacturing (CHAMP) grant which will lead to increased attainment of manufacturing degrees and certif-icates that align with the industry’s recognized competencies, skills, and certifi cations to create a pipeline of highly qualifi ed advanced manufacturing industry workers.

The need for skilled machinist is at an all-time high in Colorado. The industry is requiring a more educated work-force, due to the use of increasingly sophisticated equipment and new methods of production. Advanced manufacturing makes extensive use of computer, high precision and informa-tion technologies. These advances along with a high perfor-mance workforce capable of producing small or large volumes with the effi ciency of mass production and the fl exibility of custom manufacturing in order to respond rapidly to

customer demands (The National Council for Advanced Manufacturing).

Manufacturing employees earn high wages, relative to other industries. Research indicates that the main reason why manufacturing wages and benefi ts are higher than those out-side of manufacturing is that manufacturers need to pay higher wages to ensure that their workers are appropriately skilled and motivated. Colorado has about 5900 employers and about 135,000 employees with an increase in production that wasalmost triple the national average between 2006 and 2011. And yet, 15,800 jobs go unfi lled in Colorado each year.
