The concept of Precast Concrete Construction

was first envisioned during 1920s and

techniques for improving its capabilities evolved over

a period of time to meet the emerging needs of

designers, contractors, owners, et al.

Precast Concrete Buildings can be adopted in many

ways to meet a wide variety of design challenges.

Since it is an engineered product, its properties and

techniques must be well understood in order to

maximise its performance. Precast Concrete

Buildings ensures quality owing to state of the art

modern machineries & stringent manufacturing

processes. It is rapidly making inroads into the

Indian Building Construction Industry which is

otherwise dominated by in-situ construction

methods, owing to acute shortage of skilled labour

force, land cost becoming dearer, pressure for time

bound completion etc.

This workshop is designed to proactively update the

participants with the current practices in the Precast

Concrete Buildings industry, the manufacturing

techniques, the Design & codal provisions,

transportation & erection techniques of precast

elements etc. Also, emphasis is given for addressing

architectural precast concretes in buildings too.

Overall, the workshop aims to create awareness about

Precast Concrete Buildings; its practices, possibilities,

current challenges facing the industry and the way

forward for smoother integration of this technology

into the Indian Building Construction Industry.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one

among the foremost institutes of national

importance in higher technological education, basic

and applied research. In 1956, the German

Government offered technical assistance for

establishing an institute of higher education in

engineering in India. The first Indo-German

agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the

establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at

Madras was signed in 1959.

IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 460

faculty, 4500 students and 1250 administrative and

supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located

in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It

has established itself as a premier centre for teaching,

research and industrial consultancy in the country.

The Institute has fifteen academic departments and a

few advanced research centres in various disciplines

of engineering and sciences, with nearly 100

laboratories organised in a unique pattern of

functioning. Faculty of international repute, brilliant

student community, excellent technical and supporting

staff and an efficient administration has all

contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras.
