If you are an international student who has completed an Art & Design degree outside the UK and are looking to come to the UK to study a Master’s in the same or a different art and design discipline, the Pre-Master’s will prepare you for this transition. Master’s programmes are short, intense learning experiences which demand a high level of independence and a specific set of learning skills. Our Pre-Master’s programme is tailored to suit your artistic discipline, e.g. fashion, photography, graphic design or fine art.

If you are an international student who has completed an undergraduate degree but in a non-Art & Design subject we offer a consultative Pre-Master’s that gives students a pathway into the creative industries. We work with each student individually to create a Pre-Master’s programme that allows them to move onto a Master’s degree in the UK within the creative industries, including exciting MA courses like Fashion Brand Management, Art History, Product Design, Advertising, and Arts Business/Management.

Both routes are designed to bridge the gap between ability/experience and the ambition to study at postgraduate level. Emphasis is placed on encouraging you to become an independent learner and confident within the English-speaking educational culture.

The programme will help you to develop your spoken English in order to achieve the required level for direct entry onto a Master’s. It will also give you the experience you need and understanding of UK learning and teaching styles, to help you develop your portfolio further and build on existing skills or develop potential lines of research.

Timetable will be bespoke to an individual student, depending on their needs, e.g. more or less English, other Art & Design subjects.

wHAT SHOUlD I INClUDE IN MY PORTFOlIO?Your portfolio is the chance to show us your skills and your passion and as a guide we would like to see some, but not necessarily all, of the following:

• drawing of any kind

• project and self-initiated work, to include work in progress or finished pieces, showcasing a level of visual skill and creativity

• evidence of primary and secondary research, which might include information from reference books, magazines, exhibition or museum visits

• your thinking and development process in sketchbooks or notebooks, including reflective thinking

• personal ideas and areas of interest (if fashion is your passion, show us)

• experimentation with a range of different media and materials, showing evidence of innovative thinking where possible

• a breadth of interest in and exploration of a range of art and design disciplines

• evidence of cultural awareness, identifying social and cultural influences on your work.

If you are submitting your portfolio digitally, you should include between 10–15 images in total, showcasing a range of work, which might include sketchbook pages.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE:

STAGE SAMPlE CONTENT

Stage 1: Students assess/evaluate their existing knowledge and skills (technical, conceptual, and contextual). Students will learn skills and references that can be applied to all areas of Art & Design before honing in on their specific interests.

Stage 2: Students learn critical thinking and scholarly methods that help them explore possible lines of research for their MA. Specially-tailored activities give students an opportunity to develop their own research proposals, while still working on developing their portfolio.

Stage 3: Students focus on the development of their own creative practice through detailed research and development. The final outcome is a final major project which forms the platform for continued research and study on a Master’s Programme in the United Kingdom.

TEACHING & ASSESSMENTPre-Master’s student work is assessed both formatively and summatively. Formative assessment takes place throughout each semester in tutorials, seminars and studio workshops; formative assessment is aimed at improving student learning skills, progressing cognitive skills and developing individual approaches to creative practice. Summative assessment happens at the end of each semester and is used to grade student achievement.
