ATTENDANCE

Compulsory Attendance

Good attendance, on the part of the student, is important for a well-rounded education.

State law requires children to attend school each day that instruction is provided.

The law applies to students below the age of 6 who are voluntarily enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten.

A case of excessive “unexcused” absences will be addressed with administration and a principal’s plan of action will be established.

90 Percent Rule

In addition to compulsory attendance law, districts are required to enforce the 90 percent rule, which states that students must attend class for 90 percent of the time it is offered to receive credit or a final grade.

The 90 percent rule applies to all absences, including excused absences. If the student doesn’t meet this requirement, an attendance committee may grant the student credit or a final grade, depending on the circumstances.

PreK Guidelines

Offers detailed descriptions of expected behaviors across multiple skill domains that should

be observed in three- to five-year-old children by the end of their prekindergarten

experience.

Since research clearly demonstrates the value of early education for young children, the

Texas Education Agency (TEA) designed a document to help educators make good

decisions about what to teach their prekindergarten students.

The PreK guidelines are divided into various domains of learning:

•Social & Emotional •Math

•Language & Communication •Science

•Emergent Literacy Reading •Social Studies

•Emergent Literacy Writing •Physical Development
