SUNDAY ENTRIESSunday entries (left hand

page) highlight certain aspects of church life or a

national or global campaign. These are followed by

suggestions for daily prayer.

ANGLICAN COMMUNIONThe Anglican Communion

encompasses a rich array of countries (165!) and cultures.

This Anglican Diary enables us to feel connected in prayer to the Archbishops, Bishops and our fellow Christians all over

the globe.

PRINT TO GOThe Prayer Diary is a booklet

to be used daily. You can print off a week to a sheet of A4 and carry it with you.

“ Like most clergy, I spend quite a lot of time praying – or at least leading people in prayer. I say ‘Let us pray’ quite a few times a week. In my day job teaching in a theological

college I get to celebrate communion rather more often than most clergy. Often I am standing at the altar with my arms raised in what they call the ‘orans’ position, lifted up in

prayer offering the Eucharistic prayer on behalf of the people. And daily we say morning and evening prayer together.

Sometimes I carry out a thought experiment and wonder what I would do if the Prayer Book or Common Worship was banned and I was no longer allowed to say any pubic prayers. What would I do? Again, probably like a lot of clergy, I would be rather at a loss. We get so used to praying in public that we can forget about private prayer, especially if we are

busy and not given to deep contemplation.

That’s why I like one of the greatest Anglican writers on prayer, Jeremy Taylor, who lived in particularly turbulent times during the middle part of the seventeenth century when

England was tearing itself apart in Civil War. He was a chaplain to Charles I which meant he was a bit suspect to the parliamentarians, so he retired to work to the Earl of Carbery in Wales. But because the Prayer Book was banned he was forced to pray in a completely different way – which led to his classic manual of prayer Holy Living. He offers simple and

very direct advice – pray often and when you remember. When you hear the clock ring, say a prayer; when you get up, say a prayer; and he even provides some examples. Here’s one for the clergy: ‘Remember them that minister about holy things; let them be clothed with righteousness, and sing with joyfulness.’ Or this one for families: ‘Let all my family

and kindred, my neighbours and acquaintance receive the benefit of my prayers, and the blessings of God, the comforts and supports of thy providence, and the sanctification of thy

Spirit.’ Those really say it all!

When the monarchy was restored Jeremy Taylor became an Irish Bishop and his book became famous – and it still speaks to those of us who are busy and not very good at long

silences. If you pray little and often it soon adds up! ”MARK CHAPMAN
