Religious tales have different versions ofhow the Sangam came into being. Accordingto one, it is believed that God's nectar fellonto the earth and at that very point, thethree rivers came together and merged. Thesecond one says that Lord Brahmaperformed the Prakrista Yajna at this spot,giving it all the religious importance it holdstoday. Another one holds that Lord Ramaspent considerable time here during hisexile. Due to the above reasons, the KumbhMela is organised at the Triveni Sangamevery 12 years. This sacred celebration isknown as the world's largest congregationof religious pilgrims, thanks to the ferventparticipation of a large number of devoteesfrom all over the country.

2 Allahabad Fort

Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India

Built in the 16th century at the behest ofMughal Emperor Akbar, the Allahabad Fortis a massive monument and was unrivalledfor a long, long time in terms of design,intricacy and craftsmanship. Today, a largepart of the fort is occupied by the Indianarmy, which is inaccessible to civilians, andhence only a small part of the fort is open tovisitors.

When visiting the fort, you can take a look atthe massive Ashoka Pillar. Standing at over10 metres tall, the pillar was carved out ofsandstone and bears important inscriptionsfrom 232 BC. Another stellar part of the fortis the Jodhabai Palace, which depictsbeautiful amalgamation of Hindu andIslamic architecture. The fort also housesthe Patliputra Temple which is situatedunderground near its eastern end and theAkshyavat and source of Saraswati River,both of which are off limits.

3 Khusro Bagh

A massive garden that is simply gorgeousdue to its abundant greenery andmagnificent tombs, Khusro Bagh is one ofthe places in Allahabad where you can findcomplete mental peace in the lap of nature.The walled garden houses threemausoleums, namely the ones of SultanBegum, Nithar and Prince Khusro. Each ofthese mausoleums display excellentcraftsmanship and were done by Jehangir'sbest artisans in the 16th century.

During the Mutiny of 1857, the Khusro Baghbecame one of the centres of military revolt,but was quickly stubbed by the British.

4 All Saints Cathedral
