ResearchExperience

Structural Controllability and Observability Analysis of Complex Systems

The project aims to develop a data-driven graphical protocol to simplify controllability andobservability analysis of a broad range of complex systems. The protocol consists of two steps:Formulating data-based graphical networks from complex systems and then applying algorithmson the obtained digraphs to understand controllability and observability of the system.

Complex Systems to Graphical NetworksBachelor’s Thesis, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT BombayAdvisor : Prof. Ravindra Gudi July 2016 - Present

• Studying possible methods to convert large-scale distributed parameter systems to digraphs• Implementing Granger causality and cross-correlation based techniques to establish directed

graphs encapsulating the dynamical relations of processes• Executing the graphical protocol on a petroleum reservoir for sensor and actuator placement

design for monitoring and control purposes• Using strongly connected components in directed graphs to examine the estimable states for

a given sensor network for real-time monitoring of large-scale reservoirs

Algorithms for Controllability and Observability Analysis of Graphical NetworksSummer Internship, Process Control Group, University of Alberta, CanadaAdvisor : Prof. Vinay Prasad May 2016 - July 2016

• Studied the use of maximum matching and strongly connected components in digraphs forstructural controllability and observability

• Implemented Blossom’s Algorithm to find matched nodes in directed graphs enabling us toanalyze driver nodes required for controllability

• Applied Tarjan’s Algorithm on the directed graphs to examine strongly connected componentsenabling us to decide the optimal sensor locations for observability

• Validated the above algorithms on various real-world networks such as food webs, biochemicalreaction networks, and financial networks of corporate firms

• Presented this research work in a poster symposium organized by University of Alberta

Spatio-temporal Imputation of Missing Aerosol Data Over the Indian RegionResearch Project, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT BombayAdvisor : Prof. Mani Bhushan May 2015 - April 2016

• Carried out extensive literature survey for aerosol modeling and missing data estimation• Modeled the aerosol data using a noisy multivariate Gaussian latent variable accounting for

both spatial and temporal variations• Implemented expectation maximization method and different versions of Kalman filter and

smoothing to estimate missing aerosol data• Calculated mean square error and autocorrelation coefficients for the estimated data over

the entire Indian region to examine model performance• Compared the model performance in different parts of India and discovered that model

performs better for peninsular region as compared to Indo-gangetic region

OtherProjects

State Estimation in Styrene Polymerization ReactorCourse Project: State Estimation Fall 2016

• Generated true states from a model based on initiator concentration, monomer concentration, and polymer molecular weight distribution

• Implemented the Simple, Extended and Unscented versions of Kalman Filter to estimateconcentrations and molecular weight of the polymer

Cyclohexane ProductionCourse Project: Process Plant Simulation Fall 2015

• Extensively used the chemical process optimization software ASPEN Plus; constructed andsimulated a flow sheet of a cyclohexane production plant in ASPEN

• Calculated hydrogen recycle rate to size compressor and associated pipework; prepareddetailed report for the project

Single Board Heater SystemCourse Project: Process Control Fall 2015

• Performed system identification of the Single Board Heater System (SBHS) using numerousvirtual experiments; modeled the SBHS as a Single Input Single Output (SISO) system

• Synthesized and implemented PID controller on SBHS using direct synthesis and ZieglerNichols reaction curve method

Biodiesel productionTeam Project April 2014 - April 2015

• Synthesized biodiesel on laboratory scale from sunflower and waste vegetable oil• Researched on ways to overcome difficulties encountered to produce biodiesel from acid oil• Implemented the processes carried out in laboratory on a student’s installed pilot plant to

produce biodiesel from 200L of vegetable oil
