CERTAIN BEINGS (PRE-FINAL DRAFT)

SCENE 1, BIT 1, ROAD SCENE 1

EXT. DAY. ROAD

Guy rides a bike.

Narration: You are proud, that you have figured out the route well. You are sure that you are taking the right turn, wouldn’t even mind to look at the signs, because you are confident, confident that you have reacted to your gut instinct and feel so right about it. Until you realize that it isn’t. That it isn’t any gut instinct but a disastrous whim and you were too high to think straight.

SCENE 2, BIT 2

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

Friend carefully paints on the paper on the slant board with water color, with his mouth a little open. He backs a bit and looks at it after every single shade. He’s almost done with the outline and a bit of the inside features, but it is quite indefinite. It is a happy guy, laughing hearti-ly. Drops the brush into the water bowl and picks up savory from his snack bowl aside. Guy comes through the door, walking in very slow, with a plain face.

FRIEND

Hey. (With a mouth stuffed with food)

Guy leans and looks at the drawing as he asks,

GUYSameer has booked tickets yet?

FRIEND

No, not yet. He wanted to re-confirm with everyone.

Page 8: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !8 612.

GUY

Since when do you do water col-or and all?

FRIEND

Just practicing. The Bombay client might give an assignment any time. Been long since I did anything on paper or canvas.

Guy just looks plainly at him, merely listening without reacting anything, with his hands folded at the back. Then he looks at the guy in the painting and,

GUYHmmm. He looks happy.

Friend prepares to say it with a proud emphasis,

FRIEND

Yeah, that’s the idea. A hap-py, confident, peaceful..uh..clear..man. Everything that I am not.

Guy looks at him with a one sided mild smile, nods and walks slowly to the couch to sit as he says,

SCENE 2: BIT 3

GUY’We’.

FRIENDHuh?

GUYEverything that ’we’ are not.

FRIEND Ha ha..yeah..

But dude, no, you are getting mar-ried. Marriage scares the shit out of me. You possess, like..an ocean

Page 9: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !9 61of guts. You are so much like him.

GUY

I can’t come for the trip. I have to call Sameer and tell him.

FRIENDWhaat?! Dei..

GUY

What da? I can’t do 22nd and all. It’s like 8 days after the thing.. the wedding.

FRIEND

Ohhh... yeah.. I didn’t see this.. tch tch tch..

You’d be on your honeymoon, I guess.

GUY Huh..yeah..honey-moon..my foot. Let me see if I get through the wedding thing first.

FRIENDHuh?

As friend asks this, drawing on the board, Guy stays silent, seated on the couch, staring out the window. Friend notices something’s wrong and slowly turns to him.

FRIENDWhat do you mean da?

GUYI don’t know machan.

FRIEND

What do you mean you don’t know? (He asks with a mild shock smile)

Guy just nods slowly in denial, with his eyebrows raised a bit.

FRIEND

Page 10: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !10 61Dei..!

GUY

I have been thinking.. about this..this wedding thing..for about 4, 5 days now. I can’t do this.

FRIENDWhat!?

Now friend gets up from the drawing chair, without shifting eyes from Guy, slowly moves to the second PC chair and sits, to listen.

GUYI am scared.

FRIENDScared uh? What do you mean scared?

GUY

I thought..I assumed..it’s the right decision.. may be I didn’t think it through straight. Now, I am.. suffocating. I am done if I do this thing. A one way ticket. End of freedom and beginning of..beginning of baggage, commit-ment. I’ve been trying to see all the bright sides.. but.. when I think that..that.. what..’indepen-dence’ is the price I am going to pay.. I am shitting bricks machan.

Friend looks at him with a wide open mouth in total shock but with a constant smile and finally gives out a short laugh.

FRIEND

My head’s kind of spinning, lightly, now. What you are seeing all this only now? You’ve been planning the wedding for what 2 months now, what were you think-ing all this time then? The wed-ding is hardly 2 weeks away. You guys fought or something?

Page 11: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !11 61

GUY

It’s not about her. It’s about the marriage.. the baggage. She has no clue about that I am thinking this way now.

FRIEND

2 years of true love and all that, perfect relationship, you sign up for marriage, dude you looked like a hero to all of us in the gang..

GUY

I don’t give a fuck whether to be a hero or not. I just want to be free. I just..I just want to run.

"I just want to run" dialogue comes muffled through his fingers since he’s closed his face with his palm now in desperation.

GUY

This is just driving me mad machan.. day and night.

FRIENDMay be it is just a timely thing. It will pass.

GUY

I thought so, when this..this fever started..but then..it’s been sitting on my head 5,6 days now, a week.. And it’s not about just how I am feeling. It’s a fact. Don’t you see? It’s a dead end. You tie the knot and it’s over.

FRIENDWhat do you want to do now exactly?

GUY

I don’t know, I hate that question | I just don’t want this.

Page 12: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !12 61

FRIEND

And she doesn’t have a hint about this?

Guy nods ’no’.

FRIEND

What about her? She’s strong about this?

GUY

Very strong. She’s just jump-ing everyday, so excited about the wedding.

FRIEND

Why don’t you..talk to her about this? Discuss, you know..

GUY

I don’t know.. discussing with her? that would be like jumping into a hot bowl of boiling..soup..or something.

They both keep quiet for a few seconds, with Guy looking out the window and Friend staring at his man sketch with a mild smile in his eyes. Then Friend gives a short sharp laugh like he’s recollected something.

GUYWhat?

FRIEND

Exactly at this place.. two months ago.. you were talking about..something that was totally contrasting to the present..

SCENE 2: BIT 4: PARALLEL CUT

Page 13: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !13 61From here the present scene and the past scene will in-terleave back and forth, portraying the contrast between the past and present, parallel. ’A’ is past and ’B’ is present.

A1: BIT 5

Guy and friend are seated on the same chairs as they are seat-ed in present, and playing carrom, they are drunk, high.

FRIEND

What the! Really? (Excited and surprised big, raised eyebrows and smile)

GUY

100% (With a confident, full face smile)

FRIENDYou asked her?

GUY

Not yet. This weekend, when we meet, I am going to.

FRIENDMan, this is big! Marriage dude! Are you sure?

Page 14: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !14 617.

GUY

This Friday, we were sitting on my couch and watching a movie, like this, my arms around her, so close. She wants water, so she gets up and goes to the kitchen. After she leaves, I turn to my right and am smelling my shoulders, like this. I mean, the smell of the woman you love, I could feel the warmth of her there. And that was like.. that was like.. heaven. Right then I knew, that I want this for the rest of my life.

B1: BIT 6

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

GUYI have to call Sameer.

We have been talking about this trip since when, last January? Almost an year now. Now, I can’t, because I am getting

married. Even if I come, I won’t be the cool bachelor. While you guys happily fool around, I will be the boring married loser taking calls from my wife once in a while.

When I realized that I can’t come for the trip, that’s exactly when I was able to see it so clearly..that what I am going to lose.

A2: BIT 7

FRIENDShe would probably say yes, right?

GUY

I hope so. Even if she’s kind of

Page 15: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !15 61skeptical, I should somehow talk her into it, may be give her rea-sons, many reasons why marriage is a good idea, I mean the reasons are all strong and valid, I just have to make her see it.

B2: BIT 8

FRIEND

How do you think she would re-act, if you go tell her?

GUY

First she’ll be mad, angry. But she won’t give up. She’d

definitely try talking me into it, give me more reasons why we should do it. She’s tough.

A3: BIT 9

FRIENDYou guys ’ve told your parents?

GUY

My dad knows, mom knows, her mom knows. It’s just her dad.

FRIENDTough guy uh?

GUY

Very tough. Extreme racist. Pure old school. There would be a lot of questioning.. sessions.. I guess. We will have to probably script it well, rehearse well, then tell him.

B3: BIT 10

FRIEND

You guys tried so hard to convince

Page 16: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !16 61her dad. Won’t he kill you now?

GUY

I will disappear.. for a couple of days or something. But man, I still haven’t decided anything about going and telling anything. I am fucking scared.

A4: BIT 11

GUY

I mean, does this even sound like me? I never thought I will feel this way about getting married and all. See, you will have the person you love, next to you, influencing every act and decision of your everyday life, beautifully influ-encing everything you do and think. It’ll be like she’s foolproofing your whole life. How beautiful is that?

B4: BIT 12

GUY

How miserable is that? Someone is next to you all the time. Influenc-ing everything you think and do. I want to go somewhere, do something.. all that depends on her, directly or indirectly. A big part of my time, effort, attention, money goes to this person. Isn’t this the dumbest thing inthe world?

A5: BIT 13

GUY

The past few days, I mean, I have been strangely happy. I mean, there’s this new happiness. I am

Page 17: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !17 61just not able to sleep man.

FRIENDHa ha ha!

B5: BIT 14

GUY

The past few days have been hell. Have never felt this lone-ly before..fucking not able to sleep machan.

FRIENDHmmm.

A6: BIT 15

GUY

It’s like, I feel like, I have got wings or something, wings.

FRIENDDude!

B6: BIT 16

GUY

I am just a fucking, what, a fucking wingless bird if this happens.

Friend laughs.

FRIENDI seriously don’t know what to say.(Smiles)

GUY

Can you feel how messed up my head would be?

Page 18: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !18 61FRIEND

You think I can’t?

Friend keeps looking at Guy with a smile, as if hinting him something to be recalled.

CUT TO: SCENE 1A, PAST

SCENE 3: CUT TO: PAST, BIT 17

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STEPS.

GUYDei.. what do you mean?

FRIEND

I mean I am scared. I don’t want to do this. It is a dead end.

Friend is so impatient and restless as we walks and talks. He walks faster and talks stressful. (It has to look funny.)

GUY

The wedding is just..like..what a week away.

FRIENDI want to run dude..

GUY

I don’t understand man.. what you didn’t see this before?

FRIEND

I don’t know dude. May I be acted out of whim. I am an idiot.

I love her and all, but I can’t lock myself into this.

GUY

May be it is a timely thing. Just a fear. It will fade away.

FRIEND

No, no, no! This is so real. If I

Page 19: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !19 61don’t act upon a hint so big, then I am pushing myself into a.... it’s suicide dude.

CUT BACK TO - SCENE 1

SCENE 3, BIT 18

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

GUYHuh..! (One sided smile)

FRIEND

There’s no other go. Just, tell them.

Or you could come up with some reason or may be even create a situation.

GUYLike what?

FRIENDI don’t know..something.You guys don’t fight at all?

GUY

We do, but it’s never intense enough to break the.. relationship. She handles it pretty well.

Guy looks at the rolled sheets on the sofa. Picks a roll, unrolls it slowly. Finds a continued narrative drawn with different expression for the same face. Next to each face there’s an empty box.

GUYWhat’s this da?

Friend leans on and looks.

FRIEND

Client work. Some ad. These

Page 20: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !20 61are just rough print outs.

GUYWhat are the empty spaces for?

FRIENDThat’s for them to put some text.

GUYThis is exactly me now.

Shows the picture of face that is sad and scared, in an animated way.

GUYRough thing right?

FRIENDYeah.

Guy continues to talk as he picks a pen and starts filling up the empty dialogues boxes next to each face in the chart with a suitable line dialogue in each, matching the given expression.

FRIEND

Hmmm.. Is there any hint or.. a even a slight doubt.. that there might be an another guy..? Not necessarily now, but atleast in that past?

GUYLike, cheating?

FRIEND

Something like that? Because you could.. bring it up now.. I guess.. and try to validate that..as a strong..complaint..I guess.

GUYHundred percent sure. No.

FRIENDHmmm. What about you? (Giggles)

Page 21: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !21 61GUY

Not that talented, you know. (He talks on as he’s scribbling.)

FRIENDHow about trying something now?

GUYWhat? Start dating someone now?

FRIEND

(In an excited tone) Just start talking to someone, go out. Then create a situation where she gets you, catch you red handed some-where or something. Easy.

GUY

She knows me better machan. 2 years.

FRIEND

Hmmm. I have got nothing else, sorry.

And Friend gets up from the chair and goes back to the sketch board, stops and comes back to sit by the PC table, and talks in an excited tone again with a laughing mouth.

FRIEND

Or...(Giggles) Best idea. Say it’s not working.

GUYWhat’s not working?

Friend keeps smiling, looking at Guy, with a pause.

FRIENDThe man part.

GUYDei!

Page 22: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !22 61FRIEND

What? She know better about that as well? (Giggles) Kidding dude, kidding.

GUYTch..No, that’s a good one actually.

FRIENDWhat?

GUY

I could say that. I could say it’s not working.

FRIENDDude, that was a joke.

GUY

But it’s a valid reason. The most valid reason. What could they say after that? She, her family? What could they do? They have to call the wedding off.

FRIEND

Okay. But how will you tell them? Show them medical record or something?

GUYYeah, something like that.

FRIEND

Ha ha..! That’d be interesting. Dude, I want to be there to see their reaction.

GUY

Let me think about this. This is the best idea.

Friend goes back to the drawing table, laughing. And continues to improvise the painting.

Page 23: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !23 61Now we show what Guy had written in that chart, in the empty space next to the sad face, in his unique handwriting. " I don’t hate my life enough yet, to settle with a marriage". Guy rolls the sheet off and puts it aside on the couch back.

And lies down on the couch, with his arms folded at the back of head, talks on as he looks at the ceiling.

SCENE 3, BIT 19

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

GUY

I felt so smart about this thing. That I’d figured it all out, so perfect. But now, I feel like, I didn’t know what I was doing, not one bit. I cannot visualize, not for one second, me being a ’mar-ried thing’.

FRIEND

Married thing!! (chuckles heavi-ly with breath)

no drinks, no weed, no play sta-tion, can’t come to Shilpa’s parties, can’t talk to girls..

Guy looks on.

By the way, sir, did you unin-stall Tinder? Engaged Guys are not supposed to have dating apps. (chuckles)

You long so badly for something and when it comes close to you, you are scared. I am just think-ing, how damaging it would be, if you stop the wedding. I mean, does all your friends and relatives, her relatives, everyone knows about the wedding?

GUY

Our engagement photo is her

Page 24: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !24 61cover picture on Facebook.

I just don’t want it to happen machan. I don’t want this. I feel like a fucking loser.

FRIEND (Reacts)

GUYI badly need something. You have?

FRIENDWhat?

GUY

Whiskey, vodka anything. Just a little.

FRIEND

Aei! Your would-be is going to be here like in few minutes to de-sign your wedding invitation and you’re asking me for a drink?

Guy gasps and reacts.

GUY

Look at me. I am fucking desperate to cancel the damn wedding, but now I have to sit and act like I am interested in the invitation design. I have to act normal in front of her, like a wannabe hus-band and all that shit.

SCENE 4, BIT 20

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

The door bell rings. Friend gets up and goes out. Looks down and shouts from the stairs.

FRIENDHey..Hi..It’s open..

And comes inside.

Page 25: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !25 61

Friend backs away from the board and looks at the finished drawing. It looks much more developed than when it was shown in the first shot. A man who is standing, looking straight.

She enters.

She looks at Friend and

GIRLHi! How are you?

FRIENDHey. I am good. How are you?

GIRLYou’ve become a bit.. a bit stout..

FRIEND

What you mean a bit? I have swelled like anything.

GIRLHa ha. So how was your world tour?

FRIEND

Brilliant! Europe! I don’t have to tell you.

GIRL

(Nods, and) I am so jealous. I want to see at least 10 countries before I am 30. I hope that happens. (She looks at Guy as she says this, smil-ing with her lips folded in). )

Girl goes sits at the chair by the PC table.

FRIEND

You want to have anything? To eat, or drink?

GIRLYeah. What do you have?

FRIEND

Uh, I have donuts, hmmm,

Page 26: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !26 61bread, chocolate, curd rice..

GIRLI will have bread. You have butter?

FRIENDI should have, yes.

GIRL

Two slices of bread and this much, just this much of butter. Don’t spread it, just put it on the side and give me a spoon.

Somewhere around here, Guy pulls his phone out, checks messages and then starts to play the game. He is still on the sofa, while Girl has sat by the PC and Friend is standing.

FRIENDCool. Anything to drink? Coffee?

GIRLJust give me water.

FRIENDCool. You da? Want anything?

GUY

Uh...I will have bread too.. you have jam? (Friend nods)

FRIENDYeah.. (Walks out)

GUYOr dei, just give me bread. No jam.

FRIENDJust bread. Plain bread?

GUYYeah.

As Friend walks out, Guy stops him again.

GUYDei..

Leave it. I don’t want anything.

Page 27: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !27 61I am not that hungry.

FRIENDOkay.

Friend walks out.

GIRLNice shirt.

GUYHmm-hum..

He replies without looking at her, playing on his mobile.

GIRLI like when you wear dark colors.

GUYYeah..

GIRLSo, wear more dark colors.

GUYHmmm..

GIRLWhat hmmm, hmmm.? Say it.

GUYSay what?

GIRL

Say "okay, I will wear more dark colors?"

GUY?? Really?

GIRLWhat are you playing?

She comes close to him, leans and watches his phone screen.

GIRLYou’ll never get bored of this?

Page 28: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !28 61

GUYI didn’t get bored of

you. (giggles, as she pinches and talks) Tough man to bore..aah!

She looks at him with a smile, like she’s liked the joke.

GIRLCan I touch your face?

GUYMy face?

GIRLYeah.

She slaps him and laughs mildly. He looks at her, playful-ly tries to slap back but she defends.

SCENE 4, BIT 21

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO Friend walks in, carefully holding the plate, walks to the PC table. She goes back to the PC table and pulls the chair to sit. Takes the plate from the table. And slowly starts to eat.

GIRLThank you.

FRIENDThat’s okay. So, we will start?

GIRLSure. We’re doing it in Photoshop?

FRIENDYeah.

GIRLCool. (To Guy) Come, we’ll start.

He looks at her as she says that and goes back to play-ing, and replies casually without looking at her.

Page 29: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !29 61GUY

You guys do it. I can see from here.

GIRLExcuse me?

GUYI can see from here.

GIRLWill you please come and sit here?

GUY

Why do you need me? You both do the design.

GIRL

Yeah right. Me and him are get-ting married.

GUY

Ha ha.. Yeah da? Getting mar-ried uh?

FRIENDAiyo, marriage ah!

Guy keeps playing the game looking into the phone without noticing that she’s still starting at him. As he adjusts tosit, he notices her staring, without chewing the food in her mouth, she just stares at him. He shrugs, she stares quietly. He gasps, gets up from the sofa, walks to the PC table and sits. Now she continues to chew.

SCENE 4, BIT 22

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

Friend opens a folder. Girl looks at the screen, as Friend scrolls down randomly.

GIRLWhat is this?

FRIENDI took samples from the internet.

Page 30: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !30 61For you to..

She peeps into the screen.

GIRLWhat?! 70 images?

FRIEND

Yeah..I just wanted to..so that you can..

GIRLNo no.. I have the idea ready now.I don’t need to see any samples.

GUY

Let’s just see them. What if we find something better than what you have?

GIRL

We’d be wasting time. I have seen enough samples online already and moreover I have an original idea, I don’t want to see anything for inspiration.

GUY

Okay, but what if, I like something, you want my idea too right?

GIRL

Yeah I wanted your idea too. But I asked you to look at samples on

Page 31: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !31 6122.

GIRL

Friday. May be you should have done that then, but you were lazy to. Now I don’t want to waste time. Let’s start doing and you could improvise with your ideas.

FRIENDAlright, alright. Let’s just do it.So tell me..

Guy and Girl keep looking at each other. And she tells Friend,

GIRL

He wouldn’t do anything on time, he will be lazying around..I mean, wedding is so much work. I have to do everything, while he does noth-ing but go to office and do his work or just play games all the time. But he badly wants to get married.

FRIEND

Yeah, yeah I know. (murmurs) He badly wants to get married.

Guy is silent, and shrugs. She becomes normal again, and talks on as she eats the last slice of bread.

GIRL

.(To FRIEND) It is a comic strip. A comic strip with 8 frames. Each frame will have a moment from our relationship. Like, parts from a sweet story. How beautiful it was and..then how he asked me to mar-ry and all that..and we end it with a wedding scene.

FRIENDThat is just brilliant.

GIRL

And in the background, in a very lighter shade, there is a camou-flage that has elements like bal-loons, bangles and all that.

FRIEND

Perfect. This is nice..nice! Okay so we’ll get started. So first let’s discuss, or you guys dis-cuss what exactly are the mo-ments on the frames and then..

GIRLNo, I have them all ready.

Pulls out a sheet from her bag as she talks. Opens the fold and shows him, it has a rough layout and scribbled idea of the scenes in each frame.

FRIEND

Wow. You figured it all out uh. (As he looks at the sheet)This is going to be easy man.

I mean, last week there was this z client, a girl, friend of a friend, who wanted to do her wed-ding invitation. It took 7 hours to do that.

GUY 7 hours uh?!

GIRLWoah!

FRIEND

I mean, she brought a big chunk of sample images in a pen drive, made me look at each of them. We finally settled on an idea and did that for almost 1, 1 and half

hours, and midway she stops me.

Page 33: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !33 61She says it is not working. Then we did another design, and again she stopped me halfway. She would ask for my suggestions, but she wouldn’t take any of them. We worked on almost 5 ideas one after one. And finally she asked me to draw a small butterfly, type down the text below that, took it and left.

GUYShit!

GIRL

Ha ha..! (Laughs out loud generously).

FRIEND

I mean, she didn’t know what she wanted. 7 hours! Can you imagine?

GIRLSad..!

FRIEND

You’re the first client who has come with a clear idea. Cool!

GIRLHa ha..!

GUYHow long would this take now?

FRIENDNot long, I guess.

GIRLYou like the idea?

GUY

Yeah yeah.. (Without looking at her)

Page 34: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

GIRLHmmm.

SCENE 4, BIT 23

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

As they start designing, Guy looks at the window and thinks, the voices fade, and his narration begins. He talks about how differently he had pictured the invitation de-signing event few weeks ago and how different he feels at present. As Friend draws scene by scene, the drawn scenes come in through cross fades on Guy’s face and he narrates how strong and beautiful their love was, corresponding a bit to the drawn incidents. He looks at the man painting then and narrates about how he feels like the man looks down upon him and seems to question his courage. He slowly thinks about these and leans back and closes his eyes. Nar-ration continues a bit and then stops. After a few seconds he’s asleep. He starts snoring. (All this happens in real time). As the third snore rises, a ball of crushed paper hits his face hard and he wakes up sharply. Girl stares at him and shrugs with a frowning smile.

FRIENDWorst fellow.

Guy sits straight a bit. Looks at Friend and Girl. Picks up the water bottle and gets up from the chair, opens and drinks water as he walks casually. Closes the bottle then and keeps it on the couch. Goes back to the table and picks up his phone and checks for messages. Opens an SMS that is an ad about some bank loan or a massage service.

GUYOh shit!

GIRLWhat?

GUYThere’s a call at 4 PM it seems. They’re calling me to office.

GIRLWhat? On a Sunday?

GUY

Page 35: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !35 61Yeah, it’s important. We’ve been waiting for this the whole week.

He types down message in reply to the telemarketing mes-sage, like he’s texting his boss.

GIRL

How long will it take? You’ll come back right?

GUY

I don’t know. I will call you. You finish this and leave. In case it gets over soon, I will come back.

GIRL

What about your reception suit? You said we could go to Ashok’s shop in the evening today.

GUY

Let’s do that tomorrow. For sure, done.

He pats Friend on the back.

GUYCarry on da. I will see you.

FRIENDOkay.

And leaves quickly.

SCENE 4, BIT 24

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

We show the girl. She plainly stares at the screen.

GIRL

This looks good. Better than I thought.

FRIEND

Page 36: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !36 61

I like it very much. So, the final frame is..(picks up her sheet)

GIRL

No, wait, I want to do something different for the final frame. Let me think. 5 minutes.

FRIENDOkay, sure.

Friend gets up from the chair and stretches. He walks to the man’s sketch and looks at it. She looks at the sketch too. After a long pause, staring at it for a bit she says,

GIRLThat is so nice!

FRIENDUh, thank you.

FRIENDI will be back. 1 minute.

GIRL

Okay. Could you get me some water, when you come back?

FRIENDSure.

Friend picks the empty water bottle on the couch on his way to the door. As he picks the bottle, it disturbs the chart rolls and one drops on the floor. And it slowly rolls to Girl’s chair and touches her right heel. She looks down, picks it up and keeps it on the table. And continues to look outside the window and think. The hole corner of the chart roll catches her eye, she looks on, picks it up and peeps with one eye into the hole. Gets mildly curious and unrolls it to see. We show her looking on and slowly raising her eyebrows with a plain face.

SCENE 5, BIT 25

INT. DAY. GUY’S HOUSE

He opens his room’s door and comes in. Closes the door. Throws the bike key on the table and opens the cupboard in

Page 37: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !37 61a hurry. Looks at the shelves and thinks. Messes off the first shelf searching for something. Then the second. Squats and messes off the third. Couldn’t find what he’s searching. Gasps and thinks. Opens the next cupboard and searches. Couldn’t find there either. Gets up and slowly walks to the table, checks the drawers fast. Loses his cool, throws things away.

GUYAargghh...!

Steps back from the table slowly and lies flat on the bed. As he slowly turns his head to the right to the open cup-board, he finds the bottle in this view, on the very first shelf that he searched it for. Gets up swiftly, walks to the cupboard and picks it up, gasps with relief. Keeps the bottle on the table and sits. Looks at the bottle and thinks.

SCENE 6: BIT 26

INT. DAY. GUY’S ROOM.

Guy stands in his room, wearing a t-shirt and a towel be-low, playing the same game on his phone. Girl enters.

GUYHey.

GIRLHi.

She looks on with a plain face, without smiling or any expression.

GUYHow..when did you come?

Asks with a bit of hesitance, looking midway towards the hall through the open door.

Page 38: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !38 6128.

GIRL

Don’t worry, your mom and dad just left. I said hi.

GUYOh...okay..

He goes by the window, checks and comes back.

GUY

.(Shrugs) You didn’t tell me you were coming?

Talks as puts on his track pants, pulls it up and takes off the towel. She keeps staring.

GUYWhat?

GIRLMy dad..has..replied.

GUYOhhh... What..did he say?

She just looks on with the same plain expression. And slow-ly smiles.

GUY

He said ’yes’??? (With an intense-ly curious smile)

She runs over to him and hugs. He hugs her and lifts her up a little.

GIRLWo-hoo!

GUY

Wo-hoo! (Looks into her face, still holding and) Aarghh..Let’s get married!! (And hugs her again tight).

She slowly comes back to the table smiling and takes her bag.

Page 39: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !39 61

GIRLSo, I guess...(smiles)

GUYWhat is it?

She slowly pulls out a big bottle of whiskey, and smiles.

GUYWhat?? Really? Now?

GIRL

When will they come back? Your parents?

GUYLate evening. 8 or 9.

GIRLGreat. Then we have time.

GUYOkay. Oh, yes.

GIRLGo get glasses. Quick.

As he runs to get glasses, he stops near the door by her and looks at her with a broad smile.

GIRLWhat? (With the same broad smile)

He gets to her close, hugs her and they shout wo-hoo again.

CUT TO: SCENE 5, BIT 27

INT. DAY. GUY’S HOUSE

He pours whiskey to quarter of the glass, adds water and stirs with a fork. Picks it up and drinks.

Narrates his state of mind as he drinks. Shots in dissolve cuts.

Call from the Girl. Picks it up with a frown. She asks him if he can come to her place.

EXT. DAY. ROAD

Guy rides bike.

SCENE 8: BIT 29

EXT. DAY. GIRL’S TERRACE

She’s standing by the terrace, looking towards East. He comes through the door.

GIRL

I guess, I don’t have a longer explanation.

GUYUh?

GIRLSo, let me just say it.

Guy looks on.

GIRLI think we should call it off.

GUYWhat?

GIRLThe wedding.

Guy’s reaction changes to plain. Then to a smaller frown.

SCENE 4: BIT 30

INT. DAY. FRIEND’S HOUSE STUDIO

Friend picks the empty water bottle on the couch on his way to the door. As he picks the bottle, it disturbs the chart rolls and one drops on the floor. Slowly rolls to Girl’s chair and touches her right heel. She looks down, picks it up and keeps it on the table. And continues to look outside

Page 41: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !41 61the window and think. The hole corner of the chart roll catches her eye, she looks on, picks it up and peeps with one eye into the hole. Gets mildly curious and unrolls it to see. We show her looking on and slowly raising her eye-brows with a plain face.

It is a pencil sketch of a pretty girl, smiling with ex-citement, with a backpack on her shoulders, like she’s leaving somewhere. She looks on trying to slowly observe it. She’s humming a tune as she’s looking. Distances it a bit and looks. Friend walks in, keeps the filled water bot-tle on the PC table and sits.

FRIENDGot it?

GIRLThis is so beautiful!

FRIENDYeah? Thank you.

GIRLI mean, she looks, she is happy. And the backpack, she must be a

GIRL

traveler. Right? I love this. I mean, I kind of could re-late, I guess.

FRIENDNods and) I am happy it’s working.

GIRL

What do you think of, when you draw these characters, this one, that one? I mean, I know it’s a girl, a traveler. But what exactly do you think of when you draw?

FRIEND

Uh, this. I wanted to draw a girl, who is happy, because she is free..

Page 42: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !42 61so I asked what is the first thing that a girl might do if she’s free to do anything? Traveling, that sounded convincing. She is

a wanderer..but she’s not lost..she is peaceful and happy, she doesn’t care, goes wherever she wants to in her own will, like a free soul.

GIRL

That is so me! I mean, I want to be everything that you just said, I am that, and I want to travel, I want to wander.

As she’s done saying the above, the man painting catches her eye. She looks at it. Looks at the girl painting again, looks back at the man painting.

FRIEND Yeah? Nice.

So got the scene? (Pointing to the design in the laptop screen)

GIRLWait a minute.

SCENE 4, BIT 31

She gets up and walks to the man painting, with the girl painting in her hand. Friend meddles with the design on the PC. Looks deep into the man, and then the girl, then keeps them both side by side and looks. Folds her lips with a hesitant smile. She walks back to Friend. Looks at him and smiles.

FRIENDWhat?

GIRLI am sorry.

FRIEND

Page 43: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !43 61What?

GIRLI think we should chuck this.(Pointing to the screen)

FRIENDWhat do you mean?

GIRLI have another idea.

FRIENDNo...no...

GIRL

It’s much simpler than this. I mean, let’s keep this, just save the image, just in case..you know, we can decide later.

FRIENDWhat’s the idea?

JUMP CUT:

Friend photographs both the sketches using a SLR keep-ing them flat on the floor.

He connects the SLR to the PC and copies the images.

Puts them on Photoshop, places the man and the woman side by side to the extreme right and left of the frame, and starts to correct the man’s image a bit.

FRIENDThat’s all? Just the girl and theGuy? Nothing else?

GIRL

Yeah. The text comes on the side or below, let’s see.

FRIEND

And how is it better than the com-ic strip idea?

Page 44: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !44 61

GIRL

See I know it looks simple, but I like it so much. I mean, this re-minds me of him and this reminds me of myself. And I mean, I feel like these paintings have found me to-day, now, when I have come here to do my wedding invitation. Why should this painting fall down and roll towards me? Don’t laugh.

FRIEND

Don’t tell me you believe in all that destiny stuff.

GIRLI am just saying, what if..

I like this so much. I don’t know,. Also, the comic thing, I feel that I am kind of saying too much about our personal..stuff..you know? So.. Any-ways, I will decide later which one to use.

FRIENDHmmm..

Friend works on the image as he listens to her. He corrects the minor dots around the pictures now. Then, chooses the eraser/clone stamp tool and takes it to replace the girl’s backpack’s strap on her shoulder. And starts erasing it.

GIRLWait, wait.. what? Why?

FRIENDWhat?

GIRLWhy do you have to remove it?

FRIEND

Because it’s..her bag. I mean, she looks like a traveler with that, you want just the girl right?

Page 45: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !45 6136.

GIRLThat’s okay no. What if it’s there?

FRIEND

It doesn’t make sense. The guy has no luggage, and she’s carrying this. Do they look like prospective bride and groom this way?

She looks at the screen and thinks with a confused frown and bit of a desperate smile.

GIRLNo, they don’t.

He shrugs.

GIRLAlright.

He continues to removes.

GIRL

You know, this looks so rude to me. I mean, I am taking off her luggage.

Girl keeps looking at the screen as he’s working, now and then she shifts eyes and looks out at the window and thinks a bit, then looks back at the screen.

GIRLYou drew this for some client?

FRIEND

No no..I wouldn’t draw this good, if it is for a client. I just did it for me..practice..

GIRL

Oh..well then see, just your hob-by drawings. I am putting them in my invitation. Now I have made them more useful.

FRIEND

Page 46: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !46 61Yeah, right.. (A bit sarcastic)

GIRL

What? I am using them for a big-ger purpose. Right?

Friend talks as he works.

FRIEND

Ha ha.. I wouldn’t say so. Their purpose was to stay in those sheets as the characters they were drawn to be.

Now he’s correcting the girl painting.

FRIEND

See, now I have to erase the girl’s baggage. I mean, she was all set, happy and ready to start traveling, wander free and all that. Now she can’t because you took her backpack away and marry-ing her off to this guy.

GIRL

Oakkayy...? (Smiles with her eyebrows fully raised).

FRIEND

The baggage she had, meant to in-dicate that she’s free, indepen-dent, it indicated freedom. But, you took off that baggage and gave her another baggage (Points to the man painting that he had placed her next to on Photoshop) which indicates..which indicates the op-posite of freedom. She can’t go now, she has to get married. And this baggage is complicated than that.

GIRL

Page 47: Prashanth Ramasamy - Resume (21 Nov 2016)

Page ! of !47 61

My goodness! Look at your explanation.

FRIENDIt is valid right?

Girl plainly smiles and looks at him. And looks outside through the window. And thinks. As she thinks, Guy’s narra-tion takes over her visual. It is her narration, just said in Guy’s voice. She says about how she badly wants something and is sure about doing that. But then midway, somehow signs help her see, what she actually wants.

CUT TO:

SCENE 8: SHE SPITS (CONTD.) BIT 32

EXT. DAY. GIRL’S TERRACE

She looks on. He’s looking at her. And then looks away, with a plain reaction. And shrugs a little.

He looks at her.

GIRL

I am sorry. I mean, may be after an year or two. But I really can’t promise. It’s just that I want to be.. what I.. really want to be.

He nods. And then looks into her deeply, smiling a tiny bit in his eyes alone and,

GUYI guess..I..I admire your guts.

Slowly turns, walks to the door and leaves.

FRIENDHey!

GUY

You guys booked tickets yet? Sameer has booked it?

FRIENDNo, he’s doing it today.

GUY

Call him now. We need an extra ticket.

FRIENDWhat?

Friend asks without looking at him, continuing to draw. Then he notices Guy’s silence, and turns and looks at him. He’s sitting there smiling. Friend’s plain expression slowly changes to a smile.

We show the exterior shot of the house and we could hear the crazy scream-ing and hooting of the two guys.

And he wipes with his right hand and sees the blood on his fingers. (The reaction he gives now expresses that he nows about the thing already and has been living with it for a while now.) He gargles and spitson the ground. We see bloody spits. He does again, more lood in the saliva now. He spits for the third time, making his mouth almost dry. (As he spits, we don’t show him or his mouth spitting, instead we keep showing the place on the ground where he spits on.) He wipes it off almost casually, checks his palm and walks off.

The bye passers walking on the platform look at that strange thing on the floor and go. A few look at it curious, a few look at it normal, a few look confusing. (Showing bypassers from POV of the curious thing). Now as we show what it is:He is sitting there with a tiny shop on the floor, meaning some 40 to 50 origami figures sitting on a dirty cloth. He throws a constant look with his mouth a bit open, looking at the bypassers, wondering if anybody would buy at all.

A girl wearing a cap and glasses comes walking with her dog. Even from far as she notices the thing she looks at it witha frown. She stops and looks at the figures, and at him, and at the figures back. He looks at her with curiosity. She starts talking, asking him something (like who did this?from where did you bring this?) He doesn’t understand. Says he can’t hear or talk. She reacts like ’oh..’ She gestures and asks who did it. He says he did it himself. She frowns and expresses a surprise. He points at the figures and ges-tures the price with fingers. She says ’its fine’, still looks at the figures once more with a bit shrunk look (hint-ing that she knows about origami and that she finds the work good.) and slowly resumes to walking, she turns and looks once as she goes.

CUT - Shore

He walks towards his boat slightly irritated with the fold-ings rolled into the cloth made like a sack. Throws the tied sack into the boat, picks up the sack and a mango from the boat and leaves.

CUT - Gutter

Blood spats. Same like before.

CUT - OUR GUY’S BOAT

Friend and the girl walk towards him. Friend and the girl together explain something to our guy. He looks at her and tries to understand. She gives him a cover. He slowly takes it and looks inside: a shirt and a trouser. She explains him something about his foldings. He nods with a mildly confused frown. (We might not need this scene.)

He sits by the shore as they leave. Takes the dress out from the cover and looks at it, smells it.

Slowly as he turns, he sees people slowly coming in. He looks at them, their dress, their shoes, watches, bags, jewellery (close up shots). (Here we are trying to conveyhow a homeless guy looks at the rich people, and his feeling towards that. We establish time by having a clock in the background of the frame.) Another person comes to the table and checks out his origami figures. Read the note plate, looks at him and smiles appreciatively at him. He tries to react with a smile, with a sheepish look.

CUT - SHORE

He sits there looking deep into the sea, thoughtfully, with his mouth a little open. His right hand is rubbing the bunch of money from outside in his right trouser pocket. We show his eyes in close up (red and sick now) and then we show the depth of the sea till the horizon. (Hinting that he’slooking at it seriously, that it matters to him greatly.) CUT He’s standing, leaning on the boat and smoking the weed. He inhales it slowly and reacts to it. In distance he sees a fisherman taking a boat for sail. He walks towards him briskly. (in long shot we show) He gestures and asks to take him along. Takes the remaining cash and hands two notes to the fisherman. They exchange details and slowly the boat is pushed into the sea. He looks at his boat on the shore as he leaves in another.

CUT He’s on the boat, packing another joint and lights it up. Inhales it. Now he is behaving strange, laughing a lit-tle, expressing quick movements in his eyes, yet shows a philosophical look, a slow look.

CUT He takes the remaining 1 note of cash from his pocket and looks at it. Looks like he doesn’t know what to do with it. He starts folding it into a swan. And throws it to the middle of the boat. The 2 on the boat fishermen look at this strange.

(A bit long (duration) shot) He looks at the sky above the head of the rowing fisherman, with a constant, defined look with a feeling of contempt. The rowing fisherman looks at him. Our guy looks at the water. And at the fisherman. Looks at the sky again. Smiles as if he’s mildly astonished and points his finger at the sky, the fisherman gets curious and turns to look above at the sky. And as he turns, our guy slowly gets up and jumps into the water.

(Underwater) We show him drowning.
