Whetheryouareamem-ber of Prairie Striders orsomeone who just enjoysrunning, if you raced in theBrookings Marathon orjogged theHoboDay 5K forfun, you have been part ofthe Prairie Striders experi-ence.
No matter how PrairieStridershas influencedyourlife,yourinvitedtocelebratethe club’s 50th anniversaryafter the Jackrabbit 15Saturday, Sept. 28. The fes-tivities begin at 11 a.m. atthe South Dakota ArtMuseum just north of the finish line at SDSU’s CoughlinCampanile.
The anniversary partywill feature SDSU ice cream, cakeanddoorprizes.At11:45a.m.,aprogramwillfeaturePrairieStriders leaders from yesterday and today. PrairieStriders:HeartandsoulofBrookingsrunningPrairieStriders startedwith just10runnersonSept.12,
1969,inthebasementoftheBarnontheSouthDakotaStateUniversitycampus. Itwas thebrainchildof thenSDSUtrackcoachJayDirksentopromoterunningandjoggingforfun,fit-nessandfellowship.
ThefirstpresidentwastheindomitableBobBartling,whoatage93,isstillanactivememberandtheclublibrarian.
IntheearlydaysofPrairieStriders,runnerswerestillanoddityinBrookings.Therewereonly10originalmembers–some young, serious runners, and others thatwould run inalleysoratnighttoavoiddriverswhoweren’tusedtothemontheroadways.
50years-bigchangesToday,thereare259memberswhohailfromBrookingsto
Beaverton,Oregon.MostarefromSouthDakota,butyoucanfindPrairieStridersin20statesandoneCanadianprovince.The group organizes 11 racing events – fromonemile to amarathon–andsocialrunsthroughouttheyear.
AmongthoseracesistheJackrabbit15,aracethat’sevenolder than Prairie Striders. Again, we can thank the SDSUcrosscountryteamforbeginningthistradition.TheJack15isa15.2-mileracefromWhitetotheCampanile.Itwasfirstrunbythe1963crosscountryteamasatrainingrun.Today,it’stheoldestroadraceintheMidwest.Thisyear’s57thrunningprecedestheanniversaryparty.
The relationship between Prairie Striders at the SDSUcrosscountryandtrackteamsisstillveryhealthy.Clubmem-bersoftenvolunteeratmeets,andtheStridershaveevenpur-chasedteamequipment.
The club also funds a scholarship eachyear for an SDSUdistancerunner.NowcalledthePrairieStriders/PhilLaValleeMemorialScholarship,theclubundertookafundraisingdriveto further endow the scholarship in recognition of PrairieStriders’ golden anniversary. The final total on the drive to$75,000willbeannouncedattheanniversaryparty.
