Avanade Research Findings: Executive insights on cloud computing

• Clear mandate to cut the cost of doing business • Technology investments seen as one way to reduce costs• Decision-makers widely recognize cloud computing as a

viable way to reduce capital and operational expenditures and do not view the cloud as just the latest IT hype

• They also prioritized business values associated with a move to cloud computing, such as being more flexible, reacting to market conditions, and focus on core business

• Avanade 2009 global survey of cloud computing

Avanade Research Findings:Despite Recognized Value, Many Concerns

• Of the organizations surveyed, 61 percent say they are not leveraging cloud computing in any form– 84 percent of those respondents have

no plan to adopt cloud computing in the next 12 months

• Perceived fear over security and loss of control overwhelmingly cited as primary obstacle

Avanade Research Findings:The Adoption Gap is Closing

• Clear shift as companies begin to plan and test the use of cloud computing

• In January 2009, 54 percent had no plans to use cloud computing within 12 months, but in September 2009, that number fell to 36.5 percent

Konecranes, a global manufacturer operating in more than 400 locations, needed to harmonize their business communications and collaboration systems to realize the vision of one global company.

Results

Unified Communications as a Cloud Service Yields High Return for Manufacturer

Business Situation

By migrating email services and adding functionality such as chat, conferencing, presence and project workspaces provided by the Microsoft BPOS-S cloud service, Konecranes will receive an estimated return of 7.5M€ in 3 years. The system is also easily extendable to customers, partners, suppliers and future acquisitions to further improve collaboration across groups

SolutionKonecranes turned to Avanade to help deliver a global Unified Communication system. By exploring multiple scenarios, leveraging Avanade’s Business Benefits Calculator and Estimating Model, it was determined that the most beneficial option, both from a financial and functional perspective, was to provide Unified Communications as a Cloud service to the client’s 8000 employees.

This company’s corporate intranet was housed on a content management platform that was not longer supported by the software publisher.  Capturing, organizing and sharing over 90,000 assets, artifacts and documents for use by thousands of employees is mission critical.

Results

Swiftly Reduce Costs with Enterprise Deployment in Less than 4 monthsBusiness Situation

In addition to a project savings of $2.3M over three years—half of which delivered in year 1—this solution significantly improves their technology underpinnings.

SolutionMicrosoft and Avanade collaborated to build a new portal solution using Sharepoint hosted in the cloud using Microsoft Online Services. The solution includes a secondary disaster recovery data center,  self-service site creation and document recovery, secure 128-bit encryption with in-line virus scanning, and leverages the organizations single sign-on capability.

Origin Digital, industry leader in live IP broadcasts, on-demand publishing, and portal produc tion, wanted to create a more scalable transcoding workflow environment that delivered the same high performance its customers enjoyed but with lower operating expense, easier management, and without requiring additional capital expenditures for underutilized resources.

Results

Mission Critical Application Elevated to the Cloud

Business Situation

By building the Cloudcoder on the Windows Azure platform, Origin Digital gained real-time scalability, and reduced administration, time-to-market, and costs. We’re seeing significant reductions (in some cases ½) in computing resource cost for comparable workflows by using the Cloudcoder running on Windows Azure.

SolutionWorking with Avanade, Origin Digital built its Cloudcoder application, using the Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008 develop ment system with Azure and SQL Azure, in about two months. The Cloudcoder integrates into the Origin Digital central management platform while offloading much of the processing to the cloud. Customers upload digital files to the Origin Digital network, and the Odaptor calls the Cloudcoder service, which trans-codes the file.

• Explore cloud-based offerings– Are there solutions to problems you face today where cloud

might be a viable answer?– Take on a small cloud project to gain experience

• Pursue a pilot– Identify 1 or 2 projects where cloud offers business value

• Investigate costs– Compare the TCO of your more mature applications, such as

e-mail or collaboration, to today’s SaaS offerings• Build a road map

– Undertake an application portfolio assessment
