The Sheer Magnitude of Numbers• Each year . . . . Babies are

born in India equalling the entire population of Australia…

• A few of them are born with serious birth defects of the heart, brain and major organs

• Just imagine : two hundred thousand children every year are born with heart defects…. Less than 2 % avail of proper treatment and surgery.

Page 6: Praanam Children's Foundation

Their first birthday is a distant dream…

• Of the remaining 98% : only a few live to celebrate their first birthday . . .

• Lack of awareness of the family is one issue, finances the BIGGEST issue !

• Nowhere to go, and no one to help, fate takes its toll . . .

Cost of Specialized Care in Advanced Countries . . .

• A simple heart operation to close a hole in the heart : ASD ( Atrial Septal Defect ) in the United States costs : USD : 30,000 / - !

• In INR it is Rs. 18,00,000 ( Rs.18 Lakhs )

• A preterm baby in a Newborn ICU receiving intensive care costs the family anywhere from USD 3000 to USD 6000 a day !

•These costs would even make a ‘ rich man ‘ poor in no time in a developing country such as India.

• The average annnual per capita income of an Indian family is INR : 18,000 / -. ( US Dollars 300 ! )

The Serious Question of affordability of Specialized Healthcare for Children in India.

• Close to HALF the entire 1.2 Billion population of India earns less than this much

Page 11: Praanam Children's Foundation

Making ends meet : • Can a low income family raise

just USD 1000 ? This would mean all their savings . . .

• If the family can raise this much only, the rest is possible . . .

• How ? Subsidize or make free the professional fees, provide the basic essentials : the materials needed for the surgery ( the oxygenator, tubings, suture materials, the lines and tests, etc, etc )

Disease Spectra in Children

• Over two thirds of all illnesses in children are minor : they happen once or twice in a lifetime, not affecting the child long term

• The rest suffer from organ specific diseases requiring highly specialized centers to treat them, often requiring multiple hospitalizations, difficult surgery, difficult treatments : all VERY EXPENSIVE !

Page 15: Praanam Children's Foundation

The Unfortunate Few . . .

• This thirty percent hail from the poorest of the poor families Very few centers exist to help them

• Without help and assistance, most succumb to their illnesses, never living beyond their second

birthday . . .

Praanam Children’s Foundation was created with the aim of medically assisting children from the underprivileged sections of our societyOften times, a lifetime of carefully

planned family savings can vanish when a child suffers from prolonged treatment for illnesses resulting in enduring financial difficulties

At Praanam, with your generous help we aspire to make a difference for these challenged families

Diseases in children affecting major organs of their bodies are complicated requiring careful diagnosis and sustained treatment for successful outcomes.

The cost for surgery and treatment for such cases can be prohibitive for the economically challenged. Hospital stays are prolonged and often, midway through the treatment, the child’s family is financially exhausted and cannot continue supporting the child’s treatment !We refer to this shortfall as GAP FUNDING ……..

and we need your assistance to fill this gap !

Often times surgery is required and for a child undergoing surgery of their major organs and systems, procedures are painstakingly delicate requiring superior facilities and outstanding skills.
