FacebookFacebook Campaign Tied Together

Facebook India promotes several Indian Festivals with onlinecampaigns. One such online campaign was Tied Together whichwas released for Raksha Bandhan – a festival which celebratesthe love and duty between brothers and sisters.

The Challenge

The campaign was designed to celebrate childhood memories of brothersand sisters. Users can pull their sibling images from their Facebook profileand mash them into a 15 seconds video with an audio background, and canpost the final video back in Facebook. We used FFMPEG for video creation.FFMPEG application being one of the heaviest, Facebook was looking for apartner who can help them run this massive campaign on AWS without anydowntime or latency issues.

How did we help Facebook?

Powerupcloud designed the AWS architecture in high available auto scalingmode to ensure 100% uptime of the application. As the application washeavy, several parameters including auto-scaling rules were tweaked toaccommodate sudden spike in user traffic. Powerupcloud also handledautomated deployments during the entire campaign period which saw at-least 3 deployments per day.

The campaign was a resounding success with over 2 million users using the application to post their memories online.

Hungama.com was one of the first Indian companies to use AWS to host theirapplication. Today Hungama runs close to 1000 servers on AWS across 8different accounts. Hungama spends close to $100K on a monthly basis withAWS while their competitors spend just 1/4th of this. Also they being one of theearliest to adapt AWS, their workloads run on EC2 classic which leads toseveral cost overhead and security concerns.

How did we help Hungama?

Powerupcloud was recommended by AWS to Hungama to help them optimizethe AWS setup and bring down the cost by 60%. Powerupcloud team usedPowerTracker (an in-house tool to audit AWS accounts for usage, cost andsecurity) to assess Hungama’s current AWS setup and come up withrecommendations towards cost optimization and security.

Considering the high volume of API calls, the architecture was decoupled and designed inseveral layers to ensure that the API calls are processed by a queue. The applicationarchitecture was designed to work for a maximum concurrency of 20,000 users.

Bizfi.com processes millions of transactions and API calls in a month and dueto security concerns they maintain their data on-premise. But this has reducedtheir flexibility of using some advanced cloud services and also increasedtheir cost multifold as Bizfi has to store data for atleast 5 years due to meetcompliance. Bizfi was looking to migrate their massive Data Warehouse andReporting modules to cloud to reduce the overall time taken for generatinginsights and reports on a daily basis.

How did we help Bizfi?

As Bizfi was a heavy Microsoft shop with more than 100 SSIS jobs,Powerupcloud decided to move their on-prem SQL Server based DWH toAzure SQL Data Warehouse which will involve less changes to their currentsetup while also providing Bizfi with all advantages of a highly secure andscalable DWH.

Powerupcloud also helped Bizfi in optimizing most of their long runningqueries, data modeling, optimizing SSIS jobs, Tableau jobs to help them runthe whole DWH setup effectively on cloud.
