• To make life easier in a growing region
• Fuse together north and south –a single market for homes, jobs and services
• Reduce the vulnerability of Stockholm’s transport system
• New opportunities for public transport – on and outside the bypass
• Environmental benefits thanks to less congestion, more space for public transport and a better urban environment

A big decision
Extracted from a Swedish Government Official Report dated 2008:
• Costs for new roads and railways presently add up to more than SEK 20 billion (€2 billion) per year.
• The cost for building infrastructure is increasing compared to other price development in the country, you get less amount of road for your money.
• The study suggested that the way of creating tender document and the business model is outdated and should be made more effective
• A new investigation is started to se if there is a better, more efficient method.

A big decision
Meanwhile at the Stockholm bypass:
• Trafikverket is working with the land acquisition plan.
• The basis for design is under development by the bypass consortium made of three of the biggest consultant firms, Thyréns, WSP and Sweco.
• The conceptual design document is created in a 3D-cad environment and delivered as a typical Swedish drawing based document to be a used by the next consultants for creating the detailed design and tender documents.
• In 2011, using data from the models used for the conceptual design document the consortium creates a simplified three dimensional model to be able to visualize the system.
• The Consortium is ended.

A big decision
Work continues at Stockholm bypass:
• Its decided by Trafikverket that the Bypass project should develop BIM / 3D-modeling and use the material in the tender documents.
• ÅF/URS, Grontmij/Golder, Thyréns and WSP are assigned to the seven different subprojects.
The governments investigation is done:
• New methods for contracts between client and contractors is suggested.
• The “BIM” method is introduced and described as a possible cost saver.

Working with BIM
Work continues at Stockholm bypass:
• The consultants have begun the detailed design.
• Trafikverket and the consultants starts working to create all the necessary routines and documents in order to use the models.

Working with BIM
Implementation of BIM at Trafikverket:
• In 2013 a new project is started at Trafikverket to prepare more upcoming projects how to work with BIM.
• Based upon the experiences gained in the Bypass project.
• The project is finished in the fall of 2014.

Working with BIM
The future of BIM:
• All major projects will use (and develop) BIM from 2015.

Problems we had to face, the clients perspective
• New methods, old habits.
• New technology, old computers.
• Getting the organization prepared
• Using the exchange format.
• The status of the model
• Making sure that everybody in the project has the same view on BIM

Benefits so far, the clients perspective
• 3D-modelling makes it easier to see the overall progress during the design.
• The 3D-modelling gives you the chance of detect clashes earlier.
• The model contains information that can be easily accessed while reviewing.
21 2014-11-10
Benefits to come, the clients perspective
• The 3D models makes it very clear how things should be built during the construction phase.
• Working with 3D-modelling makes it easier handle changes in the design.
• Using data from the design makes it easier to follow up the progress during the construction phase.
